    Help! I need everyone's opinion!

    Hi Everybody,
I am picking up my car tomorrow and I found a small ding about the size of a pea on my left fender. Also, there is a deep scratch right below the ding. the problem with the scratch is that it is deep. It seems that the dealer didn't know about it and are saying it already came buffed, probably from port or factory. Now here's the dilemna, I got an unbelievable deal on the car and they don't have any other 997S'. If I was to pass on the car, not only would I not get a car for another 3 months, but I would not get the same deal since it's winter. What do I do? The dealer has dent wizard coming tomorrow to address the dent. However, the scratch will permanently remain. Is this a deal breaker? He is willing to take off some small change to soften the blow. All I can say is the dealer is treating me fair but ultimately it's my decision. What do you guys think about swapping fenders with another car on the lot? Thanks in advance!

    Regards,
    Anthony

Re: Help! I need everyone's opinion!

yup, swap the fender... there is no way you are going to pic up a damaged car, are you? Of course you will get the same deal when you want a new car... he sold you an UNDAMAGED car for that prize... when he offers you a damaged car, you refuse it, and keep him to his word... that is also a possibility, but then you'll have to wait for the new one.

For sure they will ot swap out a fender. If the deal is really killer and dent wizard works you can have them repair the scratch and sweeten the deal even more with a price reduction and/or some tequipment/accessories you want. If a repair is going to upset you, forget the deal and look elsewhere.

Re: Help! I need everyone's opinion!

That scratch is going to nag at you as long as it's there. Get a new fender and move on if necessary...

Re: Help! I need everyone's opinion!

Scratch = discount. Otherwise, deal breaker.

Re: Help! I need everyone's opinion!

How much of a discount is it worth?

Re: Help! I need everyone's opinion!

Guessing, but I would say 10-25 percent more than the repair cost at a local top of the line body shop. That factors in your opportunity cost and any potential resale value issues, right?

Re: Help! I need everyone's opinion!

    I agree with alin2!

Re: Help! I need everyone's opinion!

How "small" is small? And how "deep" is deep? You need more expertise on the job than what you'll get from us blind folks on an online forum. The scratch may appear deep, but if it is not totally throught the color, then clear can be carefully dabbed in, they make special detail sanding tools (the surface size of a coin) to bring the touched in clear flush with the surrounding surface, and then they can compound and polish the small affected area, and presto, the scratch may as well have never existed, it will be invisible. A proper tech can repair such a scratch in no time. So, I would wait to see if their dent guy is good. If the dent is small, it'll be a piece of cake to make disappear. And then have an experience painter or paint repair person give you an opinion on the scratch. Since we can't see it here, all of this "replace the fender" stuff may not be necessary or warranted. Give them the opportunity to fix it, THEN make a judgement. They've got to fix it either way, whether you take the car or not. Have patience.

Re: Help! I need everyone's opinion!

The last thing you want to do is re-spray that fender, or have a new fender sprayed. If that's the only solution.....you'll be best advised to look for another car. Nothing will totally match the color, texture, depth and durability of the factory applied finish.

Re: Help! I need everyone's opinion!

Alin2 is right, only because we are so weird about our cars. I used to have two brothers work for me and only because of them, nothing to de with me, when the occasional Rolls or football player AMG with ostritch interior became bent, the insurance companies would come around.

Joost gave the right answer, and then Alin2 pegged us all.

Re: Help! I need everyone's opinion!

The scratch is about 2 inches long on the middle of the left fender. It is deep enought where it cannot be buffed, but not down to the bare metal. The dealer offered to swap the fender if I paid the labor. I thought that was BS. Even if we came to an agreement about the price of swapping it. Is the fender even going to match from a car that was built about 1 month apart? Can they get the screws off without scratching the screws themselves. I am talking about the mounting point between the hood and fender.

Re: Help! I need everyone's opinion!

You pay the labor???!!! For a car you don't even own yet? I think there is enough doubt in your mind about how this deal is going to walk away. I would order the car and options you really want. Delayed gratification is not something the majority of us, me included, are very good at. But, in some ways, after waiting, drooling over pics of other people's 911s, visiting the dealership weekly, and daily visits to rennteam, rennlist, 6speedonline, etc. getting the 997S optioned to EXACTLY the way you want it and perfect down to the last detail makes the enjoyment of owning it so much sweeter.

    Good luck!

Re: Help! I need everyone's opinion!

This is a bit crazy. Lots of new cars arrive at dealers with minor paint faults and they simply repair them, and we never know. There are lots of companies that will do minor paint repairs on a mobile basis and they should just get it sorted. Don't buy it.

Re: Help! I need everyone's opinion!

Make some pictures of the dent before repair and get it fixed. I a buyer notices the repair you can show that there was no real damage

..and ofcourse demand a good discount that takes care of the repair and a weekend trip in a nice hotel!

U got a great deal versus a small scratch. Hmm..
    Ask yourself this:
"What are the chances of getting a deal like this again" versus "what are the chances of picking up a scratch later on in traffic"?

    Good deal versus small scratch.
If you can have the good deal with NO scratch, naturally that is preferable.

On the other hand, the dealer seems fair and willing to help you out with the scratch...and lets face it; you WILL get a scratch sooner or later on the car.

Of course it's not ideal to pick up a car with a small scratch, but focus on the good deal , not the scratch IMO.

Re: Help! I need everyone's opinion!

Have them repair it look at it then make your decision .

Re: Help! I need everyone's opinion!

    Hi Guys,
I appreciate everyone's opinion. I think if they get the ding out today and maybe a small discount on top of what they already have given me then it's a deal. You have to understand one thing this car is a stretch as it is and paying more money somewhere else is not feasible. Obviously if money wasn't an issue then I would definitely pass on the deal. I brought down a friend who is as anal as me and he didn't see it until I pointed it out. I tried taking a picture but it's impossible to see anything in the photo. My friend agrees that the ding need to address but the scratch is barely noticable.

Re: Help! I need everyone's opinion!

If it can't be photographed, it can't be much of an eyesore. Pocket your savings, call it a "birthmark", and at least now you've got the first scratch under your belt so that the second one won't make you cry nearly as much!!! (If it's that subtle of a scratch, then it can very likely be improved another 80% with careful polishing. Try meguiars #7).
