It's not only about breaking in the engine / piston rings. You also have to take it easy in the first 1000 miles so that the differential gears can wear- in together properly so they don't howl later on. I've ridden in friend's cars over the years with diff howling and they thought it was " just tire noise " .

Followed the manual to the letter on break-in. Wouldn't do it any other way.

This has been discussed many times because it is an important issue to most of us. If you do a search, you'll find the same variety of opinions and nobody knows for sure what's ideal. I have a friend who picked up a 911 at the factory and became close to the guy who showed him around...basically he said their market research indicated that most owners followed the break-in requirements for about half of the recommended time (my 996 turbo said 1,000 miles which was forever); therefore, 2k miles on the current cars. More importantly, not to lug the car at low rpms and most importantly, let it reach operating temp. before lugging or high rpm, also varying the rpm, etc. There's nothing magical about 2k miles and the break-in is probably linear. I was very careful with my 997s initially and around 1k miles took it over 5,000 rpm occasionaly and waited for 2k miles to redline it. I'm sure the engineers know best but it sure is hard to wait.

Porsche factory probably completed the initial break-in on dyno and then test run the car on track before they ship the cars to dealers. Check this out and see what you guys think.

Running it on a dyno is not same as REALLY running it
At the factory they run it hard on a bench but that's not the same as running it while pulling the car around with it....
There are already reports on this board of a guy who said he redlined it straight out of the dealership at "every shift" and now has a blown engine.. could be conincidence, but what purpose does putting a break in period in the manual do if in fact it is not really necessary?

Apologies for posting this on this forum but it seemed the least unconnected page.
This lunchtime, I was walking along a busy road and I saw 2 brand new Audis. One was a TT Coupe and the other was an A3. The only noteworthy aspects were that one had transit plates whereas the other had no licence plates at all and still had large white stickers on various body panels used during transit.
What left me open-jawed was the way they were being driven. Both were being driven dragster-like from one traffic light to the next at very high revs. Why would drivers employed by a dealer treat brand new cars like this in their early miles? The only dealer in the area is Docklands Audi. They have some explaining to do if you ask me...
