    997 Turbo News

According to Auto Motor u. Sport, the major german auto magazine the 997 Turbo will be presented early 2006.

It is confirmed to be making 490 hp and feature DSG tranny.

    Re: 997 Turbo News

and the Carrera 4 and 4S will be announced before the turbo... from reliable source

    Re: 997 Turbo News

Confirms what rc said. How stupid is it to make a 490 HP car when the magic number is just 2% more. And yes you know 500 is the magic number for marketing, bragging etc.

Ferrari seems pretty comfortable with " 490 " too on the F430 .Porsche sees things the same , it seems. OTOH,cars trying for some legitimacy like Viper or Corvette NEED the " magic number " because even with all the stuff that GM will endow the C6 Z06 with including six piston brakes with 6 pads per caliper, titanium forged rods, dry sump lubrication ,unique aluminum and titanium space frame vs base C6, unique 7l/427 cu in motor with announced 7100 rpm redline , different gearing to hit 62 mph ( 100 kph) in first gear in 3.5 seconds , 196 mph top speed ,massive rubber with announced 1.12 g on GM skidpad, sub 8 min Nurburgring time , weight 500 lbs less than 997 Turbo , etc.with performance to rival the $190K F430 and $130K 997 Turbo, , many on the Corvette boards think it's not worth more than $55K-58K- about the cost of a base C6 convertable, stripped Boxster S or a stripped MBZ E class sedan. Like expecting Porsche to sell the 997 Turbo for equal to a base non-S 997 Cab .OUCH. So mant are saying they'll just wait 2 years and pick one up used for around $38-40K - probably right and DOUBLE OUCH . Gotta love the " image discount " GM has to deal with on it's Chevy brand.
BTW, the C6 Z06 motor dynos at 525 hp, but since the marketing disasters Mazda and Mustang have been through in the past few years and with everyone and their mother having a dyno in their shop now trying to play " gotcha" with car maker advertising , every OEM is underating their motors these days. Expect the Turbo to really have 510-520 hp if the official number is truly 490.

    Re: 997 Turbo News

I don't care too much if it's 490 or a full 500. Makes no difference to me. Ten years ago it was around 400hp to go for, now it's around 500.

BTW, does the 997 4S get more power than the standard Carrera S?

    Re: 997 Turbo News

The chief engineer for Ferrari basically said, in answer to similar question posed to him regarding the F430/V8 model being 50 to 100 hp below what the German sedan wars are producing , they will not chase them. Future V8s ( not the Enzo successor ) will be about delighting the driver with quicker ( not necess. faster ) , even better handling better feeling and sounding cars reaching those limits with greater comfort and safety margins, since they are currently almost too fast for use on any public roads as it is.
I think the buying public ( or insurers/greenies ) will soon be bored with hp for it's own sake and Ferrari ( and hopefully Porsche )seems to be on the right track.

    here;s a pic i found

    Re: 997 Turbo News

Sorry this is so long. I'm not going soft on you guys... My observations are first hand. It's not exactly the same, but I have a 40x hp Z06 and a 40x hp 993 Turbo. They may as well be from different planets. If you turn off the spin control in the Z06, at 50 mph in 3rd gear it will light the tires just standing on it. That's cool. I've got a few hundred thousand miles behind a clutch and I just don't see me exploring an extra 100 hp in an evolved Z06 chassis on the street. Yeah, yeah, I know it's track ready. Well let me tell you what, go flying into the banking at TSM, just about the time you realize the suspension is through, and you just rotated, and you are right here in time because Chevy said you can; no one (in my case) has to tell you, I ain't no race car driver and this Z06 ain't no race car. Off the floor.

Porsche's version at 40x is like, it's physically impossible for something to accelerate like that. I've had cars, and there is no question another 100 hp Porsche style is reasonable. But I don't have to say that to any of you.

I hung out with the RUF crew this weekend and they warned me that the 490 hp conversion (which we are considering) will light all four tires. Like it or not. Well, if won't even chirp at 408,then they are understating the 490. I would like to check that out (in my own car). Spinning tires all day in a Z06 just doesn't ring my bell. But, if I can get a 500 hp car, with a 36/36 warranty for $65K, then I'm just bound to end up with one. I'll shut up now. After dragging you through this I won't post again for a week.

    Re: 997 Turbo News

One more thing. With 490 hp I get fire. Guess I'm not so sophisticated after all. If you see a Vette with flames coming out the rear, break out the video cam...

    Re: 997 Turbo News

Tour, I didn't quite understand what 'school of thought' you belong to, it seems you are in both

i for one, cannot stand cars like the viper/55-65AMG/corvette

power is one thing, but power without grace and poise, is just silliness.

theres only so much adrenaline that flooring it on the highway can deliver.

when it comes to the curves, a porsche leaves them in the dust.

    Re: 997 Turbo News

I just like cars. The Z06 was just right enough, that it was right enough. Can I retract the part about me getting a new 500 hp Z06? I am going to have a 997 GT3. And that means I am NOT going to buy another Z06. So there it is.

    Re: 997 Turbo News

Hey Moogle, here is the deal with a C5 Z06. You remember how incredible a 944 felt back in the day? Only it had no motor. Well, a C5 Z06 is like driving a 1985 944 with 400 hp. To me. I'll treat it nice until the 997 GT3 gets here...

Tour, Moogle was still in diapers back in the 944 days, or maybe even in utero . He grew up fast though!

Looks like something what I drove on Sunday. Two hundred miles of pure fun. What other car do you know of that when your Nav screen says extreme winding roads ahead, your heart gets excited with anticipation?
