UK drivers - March 1st deliveries

I just went into my dealer this afternoon to drop off my cherished number documentation for my 997. I could not believe my eyes

They have over 20 987 Boxsters, at least 6 Cayennes and at least 6 997's all waiting to go out on March 1 and the salesman I spoke to said that they have more new cars yet to arrive with them for PDI for March 1 deliveries. I've agreed to have my Carrera trailered over to sit in my garage ready for March 1 as the queue for collection that day is going to be ridiculous.

There was a carmon red Boxster which looked pretty good. The others were mainly basalt, artic, or GT silver. There was one in either cobalt or lapis which also looked good (dark and raining at the time so hard to tell as it was sitting outside).

Does anyone have a dealer who can beat this tally?

Re: UK drivers - March 1st deliveries

Think I'm going to consider something similar, the collection 'experience' is hardly going to be great if they're trying to get 40 cars out of the door that day. Off down to see the dealer on Sat and I'm going to see if they can either trailer it to mine (about 40 miles away from them) or if not drop it at my folks (about 5 miles away) on the afternoon of the 28th as I'm going to be down there from mid-afternoon.

What's the deal on insurance in these situations?

Re: UK drivers - March 1st deliveries

Whats the point in letting the cars sit there for another couple of weeks??
Why not pick'em up, nail some plates on and get-a-movin?
Anything to do with registration date?

Re: UK drivers - March 1st deliveries

    Rich C,

The dealer should cover insurance up to the point of hand over at your chosen delivery point. After that it is down to you. Your insurance company should cover you ok if you explain why you are having it delivered to you home.

    Dr Phil,

It's all to do with the registration plate change on March 1st. My car has been in the dealer's showroom for 2 and a half months now

...which is why I am quite happy to wait a couple of days to pick mine up on the 3rd. Won't you impatient young things ever learn?

Re: UK drivers - March 1st deliveries

Ok, so the car has been in the showrom for 2.5 months now...so you can get a license plate that says "2005"??
Whats the point? As far as I know there are no 987 models being delivered in 2004 - not the S anyway and people who eventually buy your used 987 will know its a 2005 model, since they only started delivering them in Jan 05...??

Please explain...do you save money, or is it just a quirk of yours?

Re: UK drivers - March 1st deliveries

In the UK, the registration code used to change once a year, in August. Now they change over twice, in March AND August. And then there's the year change in January too to consider.

These calendar points are traditionally used by valuation price-guides, so people generally wait until 1st Aug, or 1st March to register. Though prices are mileage adjusted anyway, so it's - horses for courses really. I guess if your car is being delivered in Feb, it makes sense to hold it for a couple of weeks. Not sure I could wait 2.5 months though...I'd rather be drivin' it!

Re: UK drivers - March 1st deliveries

Dr Phil rinse your mouth out with soap. I haven't bought the poor man's Porsche..... I've bought a 997.

Only kidding about the Boxster slur but I had to have a sly jibe following my vociferous defence of the 987 on another thread.

Au contraire - March and September.

Re: UK drivers - March 1st deliveries

I'm picking mine up on the 5th

Yeah, thats what I said - beginning of March and end of August! (Ahem.)

Mine's coming in May. I'm NOT waiting until September. I'd explode.

2.5 months I can't explain - but a few weeks I can with my thinking head on. We're particularly stupid in the UK and a car with an '05' plate on rather than a '54' (registered between Sept 04 & Feb 05) can be worth Pounds500-1000 more a trade in even if one was registered on 28th Feb & the other 1st March - we're just a bunch of plate snobs which is why we'll also pay ridiculous amounts for 'cherished' regisrations too.

Had my car arrived at the dealers in Jan I probably would have picked it up then, had we been having fantastic weather now and I knew it was at the dealers I'd probably pick it up now, but the weathers crap, it's just over 2 weeks to go now and it's an extra Pounds500-1000 towards my next car

I probably would wait until after my business trip in early March to pick the car up too if it wasn't for the 1st being my birthday - had I mentioned that yet?

I seem to remember one of your posts didn't mention it was your birthday on 1st March, but then again I might have been mistaken.

Re: UK drivers - March 1st deliveries

I can explain the 2.5 months. I originally wanted a 997 but the waiting list was nearly 12 months and I thought stuff that. I then asked about the 987 Boxster and my dealer said he had an additional allocation 2.7 car in GT silver/black with a good spec available virtually immediately. I went in to view an identical spec Boxster in the showroom (I'm sure I've told this story a few weeks back on another thread). When I got there I saw a gorgeous 997 Carrera in artic/black with most of the options I would have ordered. The car had a for sale sign on the spec sheet beside it but it stipulated that the car would not be released until 1st March as it was their showroom car. Needless to say the Boxster was forgotten and the 997 snapped up. So that's why I've had a long wait.
