    metallic noise when start up the cold 3.8 liter engine?

    Is it normal if the cold engine starts that a metallic noise is to be heard for approx. 10 seconds when the engine runs already? Quit annoying!
    Sounds like the rattle from a chain or valves
    If the engine is warm, everything sounds well.

    It was mentioned in a different thread while ago if I remember correctly, that Porsche has done it intentionally to simulate the sound of the engine from 964 and 993. Nonetheless, nothing to worry about.

    Systra, I asked exactly the same question recently. Really nothing to worry about. I love it, but my neighbours hate it at 7 in the morning! Three have them have already asked me to take it back to the dealer to be sorted!!!

    I was told its the catalytic converters making that sold. Anyway I think it sounds the dogs ********.

    This is actually the noise I always enjoy listening to, reminding me of the older 911 generations.

    One or two have mentioned before that it's a function of the cat to ensure that emissions in start-up period are within legal limits. Don't know if this is correct or not.
    But it sounds cool !

    996 engines also make this noise on start up when cold

    Thank you for calm me down. Drove for about 6 years a 993, but never recognised this knocking or may can't remember because I sold it already years ago.
