    Clear Protective Film - Opinions?

I've seen more and more cars with the clear protective film cover on the front bumper and part of the hood (like the old bras). It appears 3M makes this product. Does anyone have an opnion, for or against this? What are the advantages/disadvantages? What should it cost? Thanks.

Re: Clear Protective Film - Opinions?

I have a 3M film kit for my 997S that I was given and will have installed soon. I will take some pics when it is done. I went back and forth on this for some time as well but finally have decided to do it.

Re: Clear Protective Film - Opinions?

I was just about to opena topic on the same subject! I want to protect the nose of the car but at the same time i dont want to use that ugly black bra...

Re: Clear Protective Film - Opinions?

I've got a great mobile detail guy who keeps my wife's car clean (I do my cars myself), who is also the regional 3M authorized installer for the protective film kits. I think I'll be getting it done as well, as black is the worst for showing "sandblasting" and rock chips over time.

Re: Clear Protective Film - Opinions?

I hate to do this, but there's an interesting thread over on RennList that covers this very subject.

Re: Clear Protective Film - Opinions?

Does anyone know how much it costs and where there is a good fitter around Surrey in the UK?

Re: Clear Protective Film - Opinions?

I had the 3M film put on my 05' C4S (Arctic Silver) when I got it about 2 months ago, and it looks and works great. You will see a little "line" across the hood, but it's only noticeable close up. Bugs and road debris just cleans off easily. The cost was $600 USD. It sucks to hear a rock or pebble hit your car, but so far no damage whatsoever. I like it.

That thread is hysterical. I can't beleive some people have that much time to waste on a messageboard...

Re: Clear Protective Film - Opinions?

don't think that we Europeans are particularly fond of clear bras. I may be wrong, but haven't seen any, maybe because there's no market for it now or hasn't started up yet. any ideas?

    Thats because they are clear

    Sorry!!!

Ive seen quite a few adds for them as well as a few mentions in the mags. Thinking of doing my boxster with it as I dont fancy having to worry about chips etc. Only concern is peeling and discoloration at the edges of the "bra".. but apparently this is no longer an issue

Re: Clear Protective Film - Opinions?

I talked with my Porsche dealer about the clear bra and they quoted me $595. I talked to a good friend of mine who works at a Volvo dealership and she told me that they charge their customers $400 but only pay $150 for the work to be done through a local shop that they outsource too. So the dealer profits $250 on the deal.

My suggestion...if you have a good friend who works at a dealer try to setup a different deal with whoever does their work. You can probably meet somewhere in the middle and both benefit from it. I'm getting my clear bra and windows tinted for less than what the dealer wanted to charge me for just the clear bra.

    Interesting note:
PCNA has it applied to all of their company vehicles to keep the front ends nice for when they rotate them into the sales chanel

Re: Clear Protective Film - Opinions?

Is there someplace to have it done in or near Stuttgart for European delivery .. and also how soon after the car is painted can this be put on .

Re: Clear Protective Film - Opinions?

This is the first thing I had done to my Guards Red Carrera S before it even came home with me. I have two Audis, both with the 3M InvincaShield. It works great. This time I had a guy custom cut the pieces rather than use a kit. It was $900 in Dallas. This was a little cheaper than the quote I had for kit plus installation. It turned out beautiful, a little lower profile than the kit pieces. The edges are closer to the lines of the car and less visible.

The only disadvantage I could see with this is sun discoloration of the paint. I don't think any of us are going to let this happen to a Porsche. I've had this on the front of my six year old Audi A4 (cold weather driver now) and it's still there. There's a big tear in one spot where something big hit it, but no damage to the underlying paint.

I'll never buy another car without putting this on first. It's hard to even see and lasts a long, long time.
