SUV drivers find seats warmer than they bargained for

Ever wondered whether seat heaters should offer more graduated settings? Plenty of people think so -- especially owners of some Mercedes ML320 SUVs in the US who apparently sustained second-degree burns from their seat warmers. That's according to a report from the US National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA).

We hear that the NHTSA is in the throes of investigating models of the SUV manufactured from 2003 containing faulty seat warmers in the driver's seat. They can, apparently, overheat, causing injury to the driver's nether parts, and burning the seat covers. No fires have been reported. Yet.

    Mercedes has declined to comment.

Re: Hilarious... "MERCEDES FITS IN-SEAT AFTER-BURNERS"

Now that's what I call a warm and fuzzy ambience.

Re: Hilarious... "MERCEDES FITS IN-SEAT AFTER-BURNERS"

BMW had a similar problem with their new 5-series over here in Germany. It seems that Mercedes and BMW are using the same supplier for many things (which could explain the latest electronics problems with the E-class ).

Re: Hilarious... "MERCEDES FITS IN-SEAT AFTER-BURNERS"

The seats on my neighbours volvo caught on fire about 10 years ago. Luckily for her she had a fur coat on which shielded her privates pretty well

Re: Hilarious... "MERCEDES FITS IN-SEAT AFTER-BURNERS"

    Blame it on the Suppliers.

In the last 4-5 years it seem Bosch quality has slipped. Look at all the electrical gremlins that plague Mercedes, BMW, and Audi as well.

Honestly, with the resources each of those companies has, do you think they would design inferior components into their cars? Bangle comments excluded!

The suppliers on the other hand.......?

I believe this has been reported in the press recently that Mercedes is very unhappy, but who can they turn to to replace Bosch? All they can do is complain louder (as to the Press) and put more pressure on Bosch.

Saying it is completely the Car Makers fault is kind of like saying Levi's jeans are crap, because the thread is weak and they seams fail after many washes.

Since the Japanese started this 4 year Model Refresh in the early 90's, it seems that the European Makers can't get enough reliability testing done in time before the new models release. Hence, all the problems we have seen in the last 10 years.

Mercedes Engineering used to mean something before the Accountants took over in the mid 90's.

Re: Hilarious... "MERCEDES FITS IN-SEAT AFTER-BURNERS"

Well... even if they are just sourcing components made outside... they should have their own quality control to deal with that. They *are* a high $ outfit, after all... at least for a little while longer
