    Re: basic 987 Non-S vs basic 987 S- is the "S" worth $8K mor

in my opinion, the new 997's front grill is pretty ugly...
not that people buy the 911 for it's looks....

    Re: basic 987 Non-S vs basic 987 S- is the "S" worth $8K mor

    'secondary cars'?...

how bout a garage full of em

go for the S, money well spent. otherwise you will regret it someday. dont listen to people who say the base is a better value they secretly want the S, but for whatever reason, could not get it.

if money/family/etc/etc wasnt an issue and people had to choose between the two cars, how many would seriously go for the base because it was a bettter value/lighter/better balanced poised/whatever other BS.

    Re: basic 987 Non-S vs basic 987 S- is the "S" worth $8K mor

Let me tip the balance of the argument a bit.

Yes, I ordered a 2.7L Box. quite a fully spec one with PCM and stuff.

But, at least in Australia. My base S (with the options that I want), is still USD 10k less than a poverty pack S.

I thought ot myself, I would be much happier with a slightly slower car but with the creature comfort of PCM, Sprt seats etc.

I work hard for my money, and I dont finance my cars. Speccing my car was the best part of it. I me not too fussed about the 0.7 sec adv from 0-100km.

I would more that make up the power difference by having PCM and getting to a destination quicker, concentrating on attacking the roads, than having to stop every 500m to look at a road map....

plus, I hv 10k USD left to spend on my gf.

    Happy Ending.

    That makes sense....if you're whipped..hehehehehe
Seriously m8, I understand your argument, but had money been no issue and the only thing standing between you and a nicely specced 987S was your conscience...wouldn't you have picked the S?

    Re: basic 987 Non-S vs basic 987 S- is the "S" worth $8K mor

actually, the wife is very tolerant (almost pathologically so) of this auto-phile behavior, almost to the point it makes me feel guilty, although it could all be reverse psychology. But it sounds like all you guys have equally tolerant spouses.

BTW, I was able to test drive the 987S today (without a lot of options) - it was unbelievable. Having never driven a 996/997, I don't have a great reference point for comparison, but the 987S is faster, fiercer, more aggressive, and has significantly more top end pull. It sounds like "fury"- It's definitely "worth" the $8K US, but still, should I spend it? Can't stop thinking about it----

Ok, but do all of your girlfriends/spouses/boyfriends think that you "guys" all have gone off the deep end by getting a secondary car, one that you'll only drive consistently a few months of the year, for this much money?

This is going to be my only car... BUT I see your point. A $10k car would still get me from A to B. But sportscars are not just mere transport, as we know. I'm lucky that my spouse understands how much cars and driving mean to me, and how much enjoyment I get out of it, and his feeling is that you can't put a price on something that gives you that much pleasure (providing you can afford it to begin with, of course!)

Having said that, we are also shopping for a new kitchen...

    Re: basic 987 Non-S vs basic 987 S- is the "S" worth $8K mor

I think the question boils down to the price of the options that you have to have. For me personally, I could have lived without any options and bought the base 987S, but the boxster I recently purchased is mainly for my wife. She does not care about the 0-60 spec, but does appreciate the awesome handling. So we got a base 987 with lots of options. When you add in a lot of options, the base 987 gets to the same price level as a 987 S with nothing...

    Re: basic 987 Non-S vs basic 987 S- is the "S" worth $8K mor

$ is always a factor...even when you're filthy rich.... if not, then you'd probably be considering a CGT....

    You're halfway pregnant, mate.
Either get all wet or stay away from the pool

Are you an accountant by any chance? You sound awfully cautious
Especially if it's down to your "conscience" and not the financial aspect, you need a boot in the crotch! Conscience schmonscience... this is a sportscar you're buying...not a new zink.

I think you already know if you're gonna buy the S or not. It's just a matter of getting used to the idea.
And yes, I believe you will have a 987 S in your garage soon.

    Re: basic 987 Non-S vs basic 987 S- is the "S" worth $8K mor

Sounds like your heart is guiding you to the S. IMO, the base 987 is the sweet spot in the Porsche lineup. The base is no longer underpowered (my '99 "only" had 201hp - ouch!) and is nearly as powerful as the 986 S when it was first introduced. The base is just as fun in the twisties and will undoubtedly put a smile on your face. I also don't believe in adding frilly options. If you order a base 987 with xenons and heated seats you'll have a heck of a car. Take your wife on a nice road trip and you'll earn brownie points and still have some cash to spare.

    Re: basic 987 Non-S vs basic 987 S- is the "S" worth $8K mor

    A) I'm not an accountant. But my wife is.
    B) My heart says 987S. My brain says don't buy anything at all.
    C) The wife doesn't really care whether I get the S or non-S. She still wants something pretty huge for her 10 yr anniversary this year.
    D) It's not too cold these days (Rich) in chicago. It's about 35-40 during the day, 25-30 at nite. (That's in Fahrenheit, BTW

Unrelated issue: I wish one could purchase a 987S by mail order, or on-line. I really don't like any of the dealers in the Chicago. Snooty, pompous, condescending, slick willies, take your pick, they all make my skin crawl. And they all talk as if $50K is NOTHING-
