Re: Welcome to Rennteam: Cars and Coffee... (photos)

PAG is currently an SUV seller with excess funds to produce very few thousands car per year with emotions. SUVs are under the light at the moment for excess of weight, gas emission and what not. The explanation from the CEO gives me the feeling of a patronizing speech where PAG and his leadership know better than politics and government what the future should look like.

PAG will follow the laws and the orientation from the politics of PAG will disappear.

VW Group has (still) a lot of pull with German politicians and lawmakers but in the EU, things are a little bit different. Of course they are trying to push German politicians and the EU into a certain direction, it is called lobbyism but in the end, you are right, VW Group will follow the laws and if the EU decides that EVs are the way to go, they will go along.

I know that there is a whole discussion about synthetic fuels but in the end, I think it doesn't really make sense on a longterm view. EVs are the future, new battery tech with lighter and higher capacity batteries, new charging tech with faster charging will allow EVs to be accepted sooner or later, it is just a matter of time. We all know that, we just don't want to acknowledge it. Smiley

Based on the styling of their models, I didn't know that had a design studio. With each new model there is nothing more than a nip and tuck.yes

Re: Welcome to Rennteam: Cars and Coffee... (photos)

IMO Porsche cars have the most enduring styling from all premium brands. With the exception of the early Cayennes perhaps, all Porsches manage to keep an evergreen personality. Even early Boxsters, 996s and Gen 1 Panameras, if well kept. still have this "something"  in spite of their age. The Carrera GT is an absolutely timeless design among super-sportscars.

Modern day Mercedes and BMW, for example are totally forgotten once the model changes. Even some Ferraris of the last 20 years look obsolete already.

I have a lot of respect for Porsche design.

“Porsche Unseen” provides a glimpse of unreleased concept cars

    (11/12/2020)

Under the title “Porsche Unseen," Porsche is for the first time publishing design studies from 2005 to 2019 which have until now been kept under lock and key. The sports car manufacturer is showing spectacular visions of 15 different cars. In this way, Porsche is offering an exclusive insight into its design process – from the very first drawing to the finished model ready for series production.

“People all over the world love the timeless and innovative design of our sports cars,” says Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board at Porsche AG. “Visionary concept studies are the foundation of this success: they provide the pool of ideas for the Porsche design of tomorrow, and combine our strong tradition with trailblazing future technologies.”

The previously unpublished design studies are being presented exclusively by the Porsche Newsroom in a series of articles. The 9:11Magazine web TV format has also dedicated an episode to selected studies and examines the connection between the studies and the current production models together with Porsche Chief Designer Michael Mauer. For fans of the brand, the book entitled “Porsche Unseen” is released today by the Delius Klasing publishing house. Interested readers are given a detailed look behind the scenes of Style Porsche. A selection of studies will also be on display later for fans to admire live: the Porsche Museum will be integrating the models in the exhibition in 2021.

The design process: from the first drawing to the drivable prototype

The design process starts with a sketch. This is visualised in the next step as a 3D model. As soon as an idea is to be developed further, small models are produced in a scale of 1:3, then followed by hard models in the scale 1:1. “The virtual world is the first step, but you especially have to experience the unusual models in reality in order to understand whether a car has small, large or surprising proportions,” says Michael Mauer, Vice President Style Porsche. In contrast to the development of a production model where several models are always developed with different styling formats, the vision projects, on the other hand, concentrate on a single vision model which serves as a protagonist for the central idea.

“Porsche intentionally has just a single design studio – located in the direct proximity of development,” says Michael Mauer. “Weissach is our epicentre. Instead of opening advanced design studios in the distant metropolises of North America and Asia, our designers come from all over the world to Porsche in Weissach in order to create the latest production sports cars and automotive visions at the heart of the brand. More than 120 designers, experts for interior, exterior, colours and materials, model builders, modellers and study engineers work in the Porsche Design Studio.

The design studies: on a journey of the mind into the future of mobility

“When it comes to the visions we develop, it is not about bringing every car onto the road. Instead, it is more a question of establishing creative space and a relationship with the future,” says Michael Mauer when describing the design process and adds: “There are two possibilities for continuing to develop as a brand: either you improve your products from the present, that is to say step-by-step. However, it is difficult to be really innovative in this process. Or you give free rein to your creativity. The idea is to let your thoughts jump to the day after tomorrow, and to then move back from there to tomorrow.”

Based on this idea, Porsche develops the product and brand identity which characterises and secures the appearance of all models in the long term. The design language for future models develops from the long-term vision. In this process, the higher-level goal is to combine the Porsche design DNA with state-of-the-art vehicle engineering. On the one hand, this secures the innovative capability of future Porsche models and, on the other, also provides an evolutionary reference to the rich history of Porsche. A closer look at some examples:

    Porsche 919 Street

The Porsche 919 Street (2017; 1:1 clay model) was developed on the basis of the technology used in the Porsche 919 Hybrid, promising to make the exhilarating driving experience of the LMP1 race car available to amateur drivers. Under the outer shell are the carbon monocoque and powerful 900 PS hybrid racing drivetrain that helped the Porsche 919 to achieve numerous victories at Le Mans. The dimensions and wheelbase were also the same as on the race car.

    Porsche Vision Spyder

With its spartan, puristic cockpit, the characteristic radiator grilles over the mid engine, red graphic elements and the suggested fins at the rear, the compact Porsche Vision Spyder (2019; 1:1 hard model) clearly calls to mind the Porsche 550-1500 RS Spyder from 1954. At the same time, the study was intended to further develop the design identity of Porsche and provide a pool of ideas for future details – for example, the ultra-modern roll bar.

    Porsche Vision "Renndienst"

The Porsche vision “Renndienst” (2018; 1:1 hard model) is the free interpretation of a family-friendly space concept for up to six persons. The design team designed a futuristic “space shuttle“ with exciting proportions. The study shows how the Porsche design DNA with its characteristic surface modelling can be transferred to an unknown vehicle segment for the brand. In the interior, passengers find a comfortable and modular travel cabin. The driver sits in a central driver's seat. The all-electric drive technology is located in the underbody. As a result, passengers can enjoy an unexpectedly generous space and travel experience combined with Porsche-like flair.

    Info

The book “Porsche Unseen” is now available from retailers with the ISBN number 978-3-667-11980-3. The design studies are presented in detail over 328 pages with impressive photos from Stefan Bogner and informative text by Jan Karl Baedeker. It is published by Delius Klasing Verlag and is also available in the Porsche Museum shop.

    (11 November 2020)

In the second half of October, a rather mysterious Porsche 911 prototype was spotted at the Nürburgring with an unusually high ride height. It didn’t take too long for people to speculate a Safari-like version could be in the works as a modern-day interpretation of the 911 SC Safari. Fast forward to the present day, it has come to our attention that Porsche has been toying around with this idea for a long time.

The 911 Vision Safari was developed in 2012, but Porsche waited until now to reveal the car. It’s actually a drivable prototype and was used on the gravel surface at the company’s Weissach test facility. Chief Designer Michael Mauer rode shotgun in the wonderful contraption, and he was left impressed with the 911 on stilts: “I have rarely had so much fun before!”

Much like its ancestor, the 911 Vision Safari was engineered with a raised suspension and chunky wheel housings able to take more abuse on a rough road. The front and rear bumpers were beefed up as well and the roof received a light bar for better illumination during a hypothetical night rally event.

We can’t see what’s inside, but Porsche says there’s a stripped-out cabin with racing seats and a roll cage. Interestingly, the engineers fitted a bespoke shelf behind the seats to hold the driver’s helmet, which would be cooled down between two rally stages courtesy of a built-in fan.

Formula 1: Porsche & Volkswagen Group considering entering F1...  E0F26BDD-E91B-4EF4-964B-7C4204B9E420.gif

    (3 March 2021)

    Fritz Enzinger and Mark Webber

Head of Porsche motorsport Fritz Enzinger (left) is considering F1

Porsche and parent company the Volkswagen Group are considering entering Formula 1.

Any move depends on the direction of the sport's next engine regulations, which are due to be introduced in 2025.

Porsche Motorsport vice-president Fritz Enzinger told BBC Sport: "It would be of great interest if aspects of sustainability - for instance, the implementation of e-fuels - play a role in this.

"Should these aspects be confirmed, we will evaluate them in detail within the VW Group and discuss further steps."

E-fuels are carbon-neutral fuels that can power internal combustion engines without the environmental impact of traditional fossil fuels.

They come in a number of forms, including bio-fuels, which are made from bio-mass, and synthetic fuels, which are manufactured by an industrial process that captures carbon from the atmosphere.

F1 has committed to making e-fuels a central part of the sport from 2025.

Senior F1 figures say Porsche has been involved in the discussion around the new engine rules.

Enzinger said: "Porsche and Volkswagen AG are observing the constantly changing regulations in all relevant racing series around the world. This is also the case with regard to the emerging new engine and drivetrain regulation for Formula 1 from 2025."

Talks between relevant parties over the new F1 rules have moved on to the detail of regulations, which are part of a wider plan for the sport to achieve net-zero carbon status by 2030.

Enzinger said Porsche and VW were "currently not actively represented in these forums".

Which team could Porsche and VW join with?

If Volkswagen Group (VAG) did commit to entering F1, it would be likely to be with either its Porsche or Audi brands, sources say.

And it is not clear whether any entry would be as a full works team, in the manner of Mercedes, or as an engine supplier to an existing entrant.

VAG is said to have had initial exploratory talks with three teams - Red Bull, McLaren and Williams.

Red Bull have obvious appeal because of their level of competitiveness and absence of ties to a car manufacturer.

Their engine partner Honda is pulling out of F1 at the end of this season and Red Bull have struck a deal to take over the Japanese company's power-units and run them until the end of 2024.

Red Bull have not commented on Porsche but team principal Christian Horner said last month they were open to a partnership with a car manufacturer, also known as OEMs.

"If an exciting partner comes along, then of course it makes sense to look at it very seriously, whether it be an OEM or another type of partner," said Horner.

Meanwhile, Williams's recently appointed chief executive, Jost Capito, has had a long career as an executive at VAG.

The 62-year-old was head of VW Motorsport from 2012 to 2016 and returned to the German giant in its high-performance road-car division in 2017 after a brief period at McLaren. Capito also worked at Porsche between 1989 and 1996.

    Williams declined to comment.

McLaren - whose team principal, Andreas Seidl, is the former head of Porsche motorsport - is embarking this season on a new customer engine contract with Mercedes.

A McLaren spokesperson said: "We never comment on speculation."

New F1 president Stefano Domenicali is also a former VW Group executive.

The 55-year-old joined F1 in January after five years as CEO of Lamborghini, which is part of VAG.

Before that, he was VAG's head of future projects. He was working on an F1 feasibility study for the company when it was hit by the diesel-gate emissions scandal, which curtailed the plans.

That was the second time in the past decade that VW Group shied away from an F1 programme after investigating the idea.

It was also involved in discussions over the current engines at the start of the 2010s before ultimately deciding to focus on endurance racing.

What will F1's new engines be like?

The 2025 F1 engines will centre on hybrid power - combining internal combustion engines with an electrical and regenerative element. The aim is to have a larger proportion of their total power output created by electricity and energy recovery than the current F1 engines.

The high-tech turbo-hybrid engines used in F1 since 2014 have instigated a technical revolution in terms of thermal efficiency - the rate of conversion of fuel-energy into usable power. They have a thermal-efficiency rating of more than 50% compared with the 30% of a typical road-going petrol engine.

However, they are complex and expensive and F1 bosses say they want to ensure the new engines are more cost-effective.

Many road-car manufacturers are interested in e-fuels as a solution for carbon-neutral power as there are limitations to the practical implementation of electric cars for all purposes.

And Porsche is already building its own manufacturing plant for synthetic fuels in southern Chile.

E-fuels could also be of use in areas in which batteries are not suitable, such as air travel, where a battery sufficient to power an aeroplane would make it too heavy to fly.

Domenicali said last month: "Electrification, full electric, is not the only way for the future [of road cars].

"So the hybridisation that we want to offer in the future is the right platform on which [manufacturers] can present their product.

"Hybrid will be a diversified platform on which they can invest and promote the efficiency of their power-unit or power-train.

"Carbon neutrality is the other element at the centre of our discussion - eco-fuel, organic fuel.

"The good thing is all the OEMs and [F1] teams share this view together."
