That sounds like a good plan, and very cost effective. If you install X73 on the car you'll have a tremendous Turbo. It will also have *huge* growth potential in the engine through aftermarket modifications.

    Re: Launch date 997 Turbo

Not sure why some of you always refer to Nurgburgring lap times to define the supposed superiority of a new model as the be all and end all. There would be something very wrong if Porsche don't improve with each successive evolution of any model - I couldn't care less if the 996 Turbo laps slower than a 997 C2S (I don't drive the car to Nurgurgring everyday in Scotland so don't really factor when I purchase a car), I recently drove one and then took a 996 Turbo and will not be using my deposit for a 997 C2S, it'll either be a 996 GT3 MK2 or 996 TT.

    Re: Launch date 997 Turbo

i too am in love with the 9x6 generation

the only 997 that piques my interest is the TT

when it comes out i may buy it, otherwise, i will skip the 997 generation entirely.

    Re: Launch date 997 Turbo

Maybe "presented" to the public but not introduced.
Yes, the 490 HP sound right.

    Re: Launch date 997 Turbo

RC, any idea when the gt3 will be launched ? do you think it might be possible that Porsche comes out with tt and gt3 at the IAA ?? or rather the gt3 in Geneva?
and a suggestion: why dont you start a 997 turbo board rightaway? guess we'll be able to fill it with threads pretty quickly..

    cheers turbolite

    thank you for the advice

    GT3 and 997 Turbo - May 2006
Boxster Coupe C7 - Deliveries start september 2005
    997 C4 and C4S both (Widebody) - Deliveries September 2005

    Re: Launch date 997 Turbo

CF: how can the deliveries of the C7 and C4 and C4S start coming septembre? That is pretty soon!
    -Joost-

    Re: Launch date 997 Turbo

The reason for the widebody is for the Trubo machinery, and in the carrera is purely aesthetical-fake, so a carrera widebody out this year before the Turbo itself? that would be a shocker! in a bad way I mean

Yes, CF is right. Would you like to see them later?

    Re: Launch date 997 Turbo

RC, is CR also correct about the GT3 and Turbo release dates? Are they both being released at the same time?

    Re: Launch date 997 Turbo

No, it just strikes me, I had not expected them that early. That implies that we are going to see the first official news about it soon! wohoo!!!!
Thanks for the good news CF and RC!

    Re: Launch date 997 Turbo

    I didn't post any news, did I?

    Re: Launch date 997 Turbo

I for one think that an introduction of the non-turbo widebody 997 models this fall, before the Turbo next year, is entirely possible and even likely.

    Why?

Well, building the non-turbo widebodies requires little more than taking the 997 currently in production and changing some of the rear sheetmetal, as well as implementing the AWD system (which may not be significantly different from the 996 series). Since the profit per vehicle will be higher than the C2 and C2S, Porsche has a powerful incentive for bringing the widebodies to market ASAP.

While it may be traditional for Porsche to release the non-turbo widebodies after the turbo is out, it makes more sense from a marketing perspective to release the non-turbo versions first. This 'crescendo' of models to the turbo creates its own form of anticipation in Porsche's current and potential customers, as evidenced in this thread if nowhere else. It also gives Porsche time to tweak the DSG transmission and any other features that will be introduced on the turbo. We've already heard in another post that Walter Rohrl is devoting most his time to tuning the turbo's suspension, and getting your flagship model perfect should be a priority for any company. But I suspect that the development time required for the non-turbo widebodies is minimal given that their performance envelope is similar to the C2 and C2S.

    Anyway, just my opinion,

    Re: Launch date 997 Turbo

From a marketing perspective, it makes more sense to wait, so as to give the 997 a mid-career boost.
Sales usually drop once novelty wears off, so Porsche would have to do something to prevent this.

I am curious how much of the styling cues developed for the 997 TT will be visible on the Carrera Widebody versions...

Dock, YOU are talking about a modified car which sacrifices comfort and reliability for comfort and durability. That's no assumption but a fact. A 996 X50 with sport suspension might be great and nobody forces you to buy a new model but I am VERY sure that the 997 will have significant advantages over its predecessor.

Besides that the 997 doesn't seem to be heavier than the 996 if you compare current magazine datas, is it? I could also imagine that Porsche will introduce a significant amount of lightweight materials for essential parts to reduce the weight - something they haven't done significantly on the 996 TT.

Sure ... but your sales figures are behind expectations ... even in the U.S ... ?!

My opinion ... you'll have to support your dealership ... BMW, Mercedes, Audi etc. are doing so ... if you stay back ...you won't sell ?!

Or you have to add more value to your products ... more HP could be a first step ... the coming M3 will have 400 HP from the start ...

    Re: Launch date 997 Turbo

Porsche will be able to make 500 ponies with their powerkitted TT

    Re: Launch date 997 Turbo

    Donny, is this your car?

I saw some interior pics (suppose it's the only one in the superman combo ) of it a couple of month ago.

I have to say the overall black exterior is stunning, especially in comparison to red leather!

I was talking about introducing widebody versions. Show me the BMW widebodies

As for the HP figures, the 993 and the 996 did get mid-career HP boosts, didn't they?

    Re: Launch date 997 Turbo

    Yup, that's DonnyJ's car.

    Re: Launch date 997 Turbo

groom...993 power boost? I think in US it was 408 DIN HP all along no?

    Re: Launch date 997 Turbo

    You're right. I was talking about normally-aspirated 911 (272 to 285 HP for the 993, 300 to 320 HP for the 996).

As for Turbos, it was the optional power kit that got upgraded. Or, you could get a Turbo S after a couple years.

    Re: Launch date 997 Turbo

    Doc,
My local dealer laughed at me when I asked if the 997TT would do a sub 4 second 0-60. He said I should be thinking sub 3.5 second I suspect he was inhaling something other than Marlboroughs.
    KenW

    Re: Launch date 997 Turbo

Well, I hope that the 997TT is THAT GOOD! Maybe will get one, but don't plan on ever selling the 996 Turbo S.

My suspicion is that the 997TT will, just as the 996TT did, outpace the main competition- Ferrari (430/360), Viper, Z06, Aston Martin. Porsche has been the king of the base supercar for about a decade, and I doubt that PAG is ready to relinquish the title.

    Re: Launch date 997 Turbo

KenW, are you from Toronto. Downtown Porshe, they told me that they wouldn't get 997Turbo until Spring of 2007

    Re: Launch date 997 Turbo

    Bitko,
I'm in Oakville. It was Downtown Porsche that fed me the 3.5second line.

Looks like Canada is being treated as a third world country by Porsche. They'll probably ship 997TT's to Greece before Canada sees any!!
    KenW

    Re: Launch date 997 Turbo

Sounds about right to me, given the X50's time of 3.6. Add 40Hp and it should be there.

    Re: Launch date 997 Turbo

You're assuming the 997 won't gain any weight.

Even if it adds weight it will have big, fat tyres to help its 0-60 times.
