    997 as daily driver/long hauler?

Hi - Unfortunately where I live I don't have many twisties or sharp curves on my daily drive to/from work, but I do have occasions to open it up, and I do regularly take business trips of 600 miles round trip, by car. Would a 997 be suited for such use? I'd appreciate your experiences in similar situations.

Re: 997 as daily driver/long hauler?

As long as you don't carry much luggage, the 997 is very comfortable for long hauls.

Re: 997 as daily driver/long hauler?

For essentially heavy straight-line use, may want to consider SL55 as an alternative....55's torque (and exhaust note) is difficult to duplicate, even by 996TTS (turbo lag issues)....and Merc's are infinitely more practical than P's in terms of luggage space, speaker phones, etc for the mobile office-setup needed for long commutes/100-200 mi business trips, like NYC-Phila, etc.....

Re: 997 as daily driver/long hauler?

My 997S will arrive within two weeks, and my initial breakin road trip will be approx 4,500 mi on a road trip across ihe US, doing 5-700 mi/day.
Did the same with my '02 996, the longest trip being 6,700 mi.
The Porsche is a GREAT road car!

Re: 997 as daily driver/long hauler?

hello MrBonus, don't think so : too much noise, headache...

Re: 997 as daily driver/long hauler?

It's fine. I think there is plenty of room for soft luggage with the trunk and rear seat area. If you're getting an S then I'd turn off the PASM and it smooths out the ride.

Re: 997 as daily driver/long hauler?

Shouldn't be a problem, though I've never been in a 911 for 300 miles at a time. Depends where you are coming from automotively, but as far as sports cars go, most 911 models are very refined.

997 as daily driver/long hauler? Why not?

I drove my C4S long distances without any problem. Chicago to Norfolk VA (about 1200 miles) with only refuelling breaks and had no stiffness at the end of it. 997 is pretty soft in the suspension department and very quiet compared to older 911's so you should be fine.

Re: 997 as daily driver/long hauler?

Can't quite match the mileage you mention, but I have driven it over 100 miles a dozen times and over 200 four times, it has never felt anything other than wonderful, I came from pretty soft cars (LS400, 735i, XK8) but I do not miss them.
I drive it 40 miles a day on my regular commute, on boring and often very busy dual carriageways, but it still improves the drive way beyond anything I have had before, it is certainly not tiring.
I have driven it 5,000 miles since October and I like it just as much as when I drove it out the dealers.

Re: 997 as daily driver/long hauler?

I've done quite a few 200 mile trips and the car is very comfortable. I find the suspension soft enough for such trips and the seats (standard) are very comfortable.

The only slightly tiring aspect is the road noise from the tyres, but I put that down to some of the awful motorway roads here in the UK. On the new M6 Toll road for example, you can barely hear the tyres, but this just highlights how noisy they are on the poor roads.

Re: 997 as daily driver/long hauler?

    hello Ed J,
perfectly right : this car (or his tyres) is too noisy on most roads to be considered as very comfortable on most roads...

Re: 997 as daily driver/long hauler?

Fantastic road trip car. I've done 2000 miles round trips and it is wonderful. Far more comfortable than a sedan, even though most people would think otherwise. It's not the bumps that fatigue you, it's the slow rolling and 911s have none of that.

Re: 997 as daily driver/long hauler?

I think it's all about compromise, yes the 911 is all rounder, and you can do everything with it, but they are limits, it's a sports car before all.
And whatever they come up with in terms of comfort gizmos and stuff, engineers are limited by the width of the huge tyres anyway, in my 996 cab, it's pretty noisy above 150 kmh as you would expect with a soft top but also due to the 285 cm wide tyres (rear).
Same in the Merc SL actually.
The S also has wide tyres but there's so much sound insulation materials that the car is quiet and it's not a convertible.
On the 911 coupe, can't tell you as I don't own one but it's never gonna be lexus like, it's the (small) price to pay to enjoy a wonderful sports car.
If you think a 911 is tiresome on long journeys, the Ferrari 360 can be even worse, it's loud, it's low so not great for your back after a few hours, and less comfort goodies, not to mention Lotus, etc etc etc.
    Compromise, compromise...

Not at all. The 911 is actually better for one's back in long road trips than most sedans. It may not feel like it at first blush do its taut suspension, but if you actually do it, you'll arrive fresher at the destination.

Re: 997 as daily driver/long hauler?

    Adias,
I was talking about the 360 but to be fair, I don't think the 911 is great for people with back problems either
I don't have a great back (too much rugby in my past years) and after a few hours of driving it's stiff.
It's simple physics really, the lower you sit, the more weight on your lower back.
And I have actually done it, over 40,000 km including 25000 km in the first year of ownership! But it was worth it

    Huh?

I just don't get it. Unless you're driving on pavé at > 150 Km/h all day long I don't see what the problem is. The 997 is like a Lexus compared to a 993 or a TVR. If it's that bad go buy an SL500.

Absolutely spot on, there are no problems, if you love the car you'll love to drive it, end of.

Anyway, whats the matter with the Belgians on this thread? Have you gone soft or is it the cobbles?

    Re: Huh?

    Hello Le Chef, hello Ando,
have to travel a bit : since a half century, not more cobbles here than elsewhere.
I love this car but I'm neither deaf neather porsche bigot... Sport car, great car, not very comfortable car
    Let's be reasonable !
