I have a 997S and called the mechanic at our Dallas dealer on this one. He said: a. wait until all three bars are gone, then add a quart of Mobil 1. b. there's no need to add small increments of oil when one bar disappears, as the car holds 11 quarts. c. it's normal to burn small amounts of oil, especially early on. d. change the oil at least every 6 months.
I have almost 2000 miles on mine and have only dropped one bar. So far no oil burn. I am going to change the oil more frequently than recommended.

I add oil when I have one bar left, but make sure the reading is correct.
A slight inclination could fool you as it happened to me.
I was fortunate enough to have an experienced friend that asked me to push the car two meters away and when I repeated the measurement I saw two bars full.

Read the web's technical articles on Mobil 1 and other synthetics: you may then think and act differently.
From what I can understand, a "feature" of synthetics, but apparently true of all forms of motor oil, is that the "friction reduction factor," which you obviously want to be maximized, actually seems to improve - up to a point - AFTER the first few thousand miles. The point of maximum friction reduction seems to vary by oil type and brand, and perhaps by vehicle type and kind of driving, but the maximum point of friction reduction takes a while to reach; there's lots of variables. The main point being that it's counterproductive to change oil too soon.
Since Porsche recommends Mobil 1, and to change it at a specified mileage/time, I'd stick with Porsche's recommendation; you may save more than just your money!
