Re: Basalt Black , Carrera S, Nice wheels???

I've driven myself practically NUTS over this on my soon-to-be-delivered Black/Terracotta S, almost to the point (and I have not ruled this out) of purchasing an additional set of wheels with tires mounted such that I can easily switch between the standard 997S wheels and the 19" Carrera Classics (as you have pictured) as the mood or whim strikes me. I love them both. Today, I'm still partial to the more unique and industrial-deco standard wheels. On other days, I think that they distract too much from the body lines and beauty of the car, and I wish I had ordered the Classics for a cleaner look. And then my head starts spinning around and around. I've found a place where I can get brand-new 19" classics shod in o.e. Michelin Pilots for roughly $4700. Considering that I'll eventually need new tires anyhow, that's not too bad. And if I eventually found that I really prefer one look over the other, I could always ebay the wheels that I like the least. But I don't have an answer for you. Your pictures look great. The standard S wheel looks great. That's my torment.

grant.uk, I've ordered the same wheels and basalt black after seeing a basalt coloured car parked next to silver cars, also all 3 wheel types were on show at the same location and time. I loved the colour and the wheels so much that I changed my order.
IMO the new wheel design is to fussy

Re: Basalt Black , Carrera S, Nice wheels???

Are you sure the car shown is the 's' version, the wheels look slightly smaller than I remember?

Re: Basalt Black , Carrera S, Nice wheels???

Whether or not it's an "S" doesn't make a difference. Those are definately the 19" Classics. You can tell from the unique shape/contour of the spokes. I can appreciate the "fussy" comment, but conversely, the Classics can look too boring and soft. I'm on the fence between the two, I may well own a set of both.

Re: Basalt Black , Carrera S, Nice wheels???

These are the carrera classics... don't like them ... the spokes are too narrow to my likings... too feminine.

I ordered those. 997s seal grey, black leather

Fine, must be me, Its just the clearance on the back wheel on the top picture looks larger than I remember, or could it be lack of PASM?
To clarify my choice further, I was asked to pop up to my dealer to see the sport design wheels on a pre delivery vehicle and had absolutely no intention to change my order to classic's, but seeing the different wheels together gave me a completely different comparison, the standard S wheels looked almost awkward in design. Its bit like viewing every available colour at the same time

feminine? what, as in stream-lined and stylish

Re: Basalt Black , Carrera S, Nice wheels???

Yes very nice, I will order those wheels for sure. The appropriateness of the look of the stock carerra S wheels is very puzzling and difficult for me to like.

Re: Basalt Black , Carrera S, Nice wheels???

I ordered the Carrera Classics as well with my Basalt Black 997S, best looking wheels for this car IMO.

Re: Basalt Black , Carrera S, Nice wheels???

I have the 19" Sport Design but really like the Carrera Classic. To me they have a cleaner look not to mention they're a lot easier to clean then the Sport Design. I may end up getting the classics and pilot sports and just swaping out the sport design or ebay them.

Carlos, taking into consideration all the excellent creative photoshop you have produced for this forum, your choice for classics has further endorsed my decision to go with the same

Re: Basalt Black , Carrera S, Nice wheels???

I have ordered the standard S wheels. They are the classics of the future.

Here are my reasons for the Carrera Classics:

    - they are sportier looking with the clean five spoke design,

    - this is a more classic-ageless design that always looks good, while the busy-looking Carrera S may grow tiresome and like initial controverted designs, the novelty will pass and look expired,

    - The carrera S wheels will look more outdated when the design of the standard wheel changes in the facelift since they are the "standard wheels",

    - they are less common than the Carrera S wheels, which as time goes by, will look more common and plain,

    - the thin spokes really brings out the size of the 19 inches, the Carrera S look smaller since the centre hub is so big and spokes so wide,

    - they permit the best unobstructed view to the red calipers ,
    - they are easier to keep clean,

    - and finally, it really drives all this home when you see them side by side,

Just want to make clear these are just my own personal opinions though ... the more choices the better since we don't all think the same

Re: Basalt Black , Carrera S, Nice wheels???

@ carlos: You're so right! I love those carrera classic wheels. Did you order those wheels for yuour 997 ?
Don't know if you've mentionned it before but what color did you pick?

Re: Basalt Black , Carrera S, Nice wheels???

I ordered the 19" Classics as I really dislike the lobster forks, and I really like the clean lines of the classics. Just my 2 cents...

Re: Basalt Black , Carrera S, Nice wheels???

These rims are perfect, better than those "full of holes" rims, take the new aerokit frontbumper and the holedesign standard carrera S rims, and you have a Porsche 911 Carrera Full of Holes. And it probably is a PITA to clean 'em.
Those on the pic should've been the standards if you ask me...

Hi amazon, you bet I did as to the color, I chose Basalt black exterior and black leather interior.

    Nice combo!
I would have chosen midnight blue though.

Re: Basalt Black , Carrera S, Nice wheels???

Carlos, the 19" Classic are the nicest of all IMO, agree with all your points. When I get my new car I will also get those.

Re: Basalt Black , Carrera S, Nice wheels???

Atlas is a great color for this car. It is a sophisticated combination of gray/black/blue that stands apart from the crowd without calling too much attention to itself. The same can be said for the Classics.

Re: Basalt Black , Carrera S, Nice wheels???

I prefere the carrera sports design with the atlas. That would give a great contrast. but your choice is very nice as well, it's a classic look you'll never get bored of.

Re: Basalt Black , Carrera S, Nice wheels???

I use to think the Carrera Classic were the best looking wheels for the 997, but now that I've seen the Sport Design I can't say it anymore.
I belive those are by far the best looking wheels, Carrera Classic more sportive, Sport Design more charming and classy.
Changed my mind after seeing this pic

Re: Basalt Black , Carrera S, Nice wheels???

    Me too J,
That's the pic that changed my mind! Basalt black with those wheels! Superb!
I agree with Carlos thouh, the other wheels are more timeless and never been a fine of multi spokes wheels but these are something else, and IMO, they're the one that show the most the big diameter of the rim, i.e. 19 in.
    Superb!
The Carrera S wheels are my least favorite, they look a bit like the Gallardo's wheels but not as nice somehow, a bit too fussy for my tastes.

Re: Basalt Black , Carrera S, Nice wheels???

I agree with J Steven and Franch, I have a solid Black 997S with 19" Classics, I much prefer them to the lobster forks, they are easy to clean (even the inside rim) and look fine, but I prefer the Sport Design having seen all three live!

Re: Basalt Black , Carrera S, Nice wheels???

What's nice about the sport classics. (the ones with fifteen spokes) is that they hide the wide, silver, always-dirty inner rim of the wheel. They also hide the "ugly" brakes and suspension parts. Even more; they make it "impossible" for some [censored] to loosen your bleeder valves on your brakes (ever think of that?).

The fact that they are harder to keep clean may or may not be a fact. I imagine the correct wide, soft, ample brush at the end of a long handle would work just fine. Then again more surface area means more brake dust that doesn't simply blow away.

Carerra or Sport Classic design: what a difficult decision!

    Which ones look "flashy-ier?"
