    Register in the UK

    Hi,
I am in France and would be interested to know if I could register my car in the UK as I will soon move to Manchester.
My car is LHD; would that cause some sort of problems regarding registration or driving habits? [I'm used to left driving in the UK].

    Thanks for letting me know.

    Re: Register in the UK

    Hi Zacharie,
I am french too and have living in the UK for a few years now.
Driving a LHD car in the UK is not problem, you get used to it. The only problem is on single when you want to overtake trucks or vans, you have no visibility so dangerous but no big deal, just be extra careful.
There are a lot of LHD drive in the UK with UK license plate and I must admit I am not sure of the procedure but it can't be that hard.
    Try the DVLA website.

    Re: Register in the UK

Don't re-rigister if you can avoid it. There are loads of speed cameras in the UK and they won't bother sending out a fine to a foreign registered car.

    Re: Register in the UK

Fanch and ISUK, thank you for your responses. I am willing to follow your last advice and keep the vehicle with its french registration.

    Re: Register in the UK

    Good choice Zacharie,
I brought my Carrera one whole summer here in the UK and no problems at all.
And the Brits are excellent drivers, they actually are more considerate when they see a foreign license plate driver.
Unlike the French must I say.
So keep your licence plate, I think that's best for now at least.

    Re: Register in the UK

    Zacharie,

If you change your mind can I have your French plates if you don't need them? I'd love to get away with a few speeding fines

    Re: Register in the UK

Technically, you are required to transfer the registration to the U.K. after becoming resident there but we kept a LHD BMW which was used daily in and around London registered in Belgium for three years without problem. Many parking fines were avoided.

If you do choose to transfer the registration then it is pretty easy. The biggest problem is usually having MPH marks on the speedo.

    Re: Register in the UK

Great responses! you guys are very helpful!
Stephen, I've the chance to be able to commute the Km/h marks to MP/h thanks to the digital speedometer.
Therefore I'll have two readings, added the Km/h on the needle tachometer.
    Thanks.

    Re: Register in the UK

I suspect a digital readout will be more than enough. Normal practice is to put a sticker overlay on top of the speedo.

The other issue is the headlights. Some Porsche lights have an internal switch which will swap them from LHD to RHD. If not, I think that they accept black stickers.

As you can see, they aren't particularly difficult about it. You just have to find out what changes need to be made.

One thing you might want to do if you keep the registration overseas is to make sure the registration is in the name of someone who will not be driving the car. That way if you are stopped then you are just borrowing the car rather than driving your own. Makes it a little tougher for them to tag you for failing to register the car in the U.K. This is doubly true if you will be getting a U.K. drivers license (which is evidence that you are resident in the U.K.).

    Hi Zacharie,

if I was you I would keep the french licence plate. Normally you have to take out the car from the UK every 6 months in order to drive without any problem.
Where do you come from France?

    Re: Register in the UK

FixedWing, thank you for the so complete info you provided; it's not that I don't want to register in the UK, I was just wondering what options are available. I always admire how Britannic citizen drive with so much respect toward pedestrians, cyclist and other drivers. If only French citizen could do the same. Worst experience perhaps is in India where I am always afraid to cross the streets without being smashed by a bus or a car.

Captain Bady, I didn't know I had to exit the UK every six months...but that should not be a problem with the Eurostar, things are so easy. I am in Paris.

One thing I experienced with a LHD car is the minor problem for which you have to take a parking ticket or insert it in a slot. If you're alone, exit the car, take your key off...

I meant, the car has to exit the country every 6 months!

You are right for the car parkings. It is pretty stressful.

Or just back through the gate!!!

I think one of the things you will need to decide is whether you are going to comply with the letter of the law or whether you are willing to fudge it.

If you do not feel comfortable fudging things then you will need to register the car in the U.K. within a certain period of moving there.

If you are willing to fudge things then it is just a matter of looking at what is practical and how likely you are to get into trouble.

That's what it boils down to really.

In that case I will follow the letter of the law. It's the least I can do, I must behave honestly. I mean, If I have the chance to be welcomed in the UK with a job, a situation, friends and a society willing to gladly admitt me in their homeland, I have to be good to them in return, show that they were right in their decision, and therefore be respectful of their law.

Cher Zacherie, you will see when you come in Manchester how you will change idea!

I just follow the path of the holy man, the rest will follow

    Re: Register in the UK

Hi there to you all! As you can see this is my first post on this forum...
About driving a forein car in England all I can tell you is that I drove my portuguese BMW Z3 for 3 years while I was studying there with absolutely 0 problems, theres no way they can see if you've been in and out of the country and never paid a ticket even when I was doing 100mph on a 50mph zone at 3 o'clock in the morning...
