Can you manually dim the wing mirrors?

I hate that glare you get in your wing mirrors when an SUV pulls up behind you at lights. So I am considering getting auto-dim mirrors on my Boxster S. However, I really don't care about the auto rain sensors (which the auto-dim mirrors are bundled with, annoyingly). I would like to order just the auto-dimmers, but can't. Even better ($ wise) I would like to just be able to dim the wing mirrors manually, as you can with most cars rear view mirror. Is it possible?

Re: Can you manually dim the wing mirrors?

No I'm afraid it is not possible. It is a certain type of mirror that deems itself with respect to the luminosity.
As for the wipers, I think they are in auto wipe mode only when activated to the first setting, but not 100% sure as I don't have them.

Re: Can you manually dim the wing mirrors?

That's why I ordered the mirror / wiper package, your line of sight is lower and more in the glare of headlights. It remains to be seen how good the rain sensing wipers are, they were a total pain in our BMW. I have found a manually variable intermittent wipe much better up until now.

Re: Can you manually dim the wing mirrors?

I *HATE* auto dim review mirrors. Got them on the Mini only because they came as part of the visibility pack which was teh only way to get the heated front screen - but the mirror drives me crazy.

I though it would just dim when in response to someone coming up behind you with bright lights but what it actually does is dim as soon as the ambient light level falls meaning everything behind you is dimmed - bright light or not - makes it a nightmare to see cyclists/pedestrians and the like.

funnilty enough didn't want rain sensor wipers either a per your comment Dreamcar, but they were part of the pack too, and these ones seem to work really well - got the sensor bang on - go figure.

    Just my 2p worth....

    Rich C,

Why are you worried about cyclist or pedestrians who are BEHIND you?? Or do you reverse very quickly at night in dimly lit areas?? I think we should be told

Never know when i'm going to have to pull off some drastic manuvor to escape from Dr P trying tnick my wheels!

But seriously, I just like to know whos about... very observant driver me - even if I can't spell

Re: Can you manually dim the wing mirrors?

Possibly no need to worry about Dr Phil. I put him in touch with a company who supposedly supply the 19" S alloys. I think you guys now owe me a drink at the meet for "saving" your wheels from his evil clutches

Re: Can you manually dim the wing mirrors?

Thanks everyone. Gotta go for the auto-dim then.

Re: Can you manually dim the wing mirrors?

I don't know about everyone else but $690 seems pretty steep for auto dimming mirrors and a rain sensor.

    Rich C,

I've just re-read your post and would suggest that your system is faulty. If it's the same one fitted to all other BMW's there is a light sensor in a red dome underneath the rear view interior mirror which detects light from following cars and dims the mirrors. If there is no car behind you the mirrors should not dim

Just don't expect a certain BMW garage to fix it without breaking something else. You have been warned.

Thanks - i'll check. Not dealing with said dealer for any fixes as there is a main dealer near work.

Was there yesterday to go out with a technician to listen to a couple of rattles - end result, car booked in for a week - dashboard coming out, new roof being fitted (it's a cabriolet!). OK, bit miffed car was rattling but can't knock this centres service so far - no ifs or buts (yet!?)
