    997 Recall in the UK

One of the guys on the UK Boxa.net forum has just had a recall letter through the post:

"Through regular quality inspections at Porsche AG, it has been identified that there is a possibility that the engine in your vehicle has been installed with the incorrectly machined crankcase. Due to a machining error, the intermediate shaft may not sit in the designed position in the crankcase.

To determine whether this fault exists in your vehicle, the engine must be checked and depending on the result, it may be necessary to install an additional spacer to the intermediate shaft bearing cover."

Apparently the OPC reckons that it'll take 30 mins to do the check and 10 hours to do the repair if necessary. I'd have thought it takes longer than 30 mins to do the inspection.

Anyway, thought this may be of interest to this board.

Very much appreciated and if they take my car away from me I will have to fight them to the death ;-)

Usually it's the other way around- guys with bad engines have to fight PAG to the death to get them to make good .

Sounds like a hoax to me. If one of our Rennteam members get this letter, then I would believe it. Also, why just the UK? And, where is the press release or news item? This always makes the news when a car manufacturer does a recall.

It's not a hoax. Read the thread at Boxa.net. In the UK, there are no press releases for recalls. Typically, you receive a letter from the garage you purchased from, as is happening in this case.

Sounds like a particular range of engine serial numbers may be affected. Any idea if there are any parameters to this recall?

I had an early 993 that developed a leak in a cam tower casting at about 1,200 miles. Turned out to be a defective casting. It was replaced under warranty. I later learned that four or five other 993 cars within a few serial numbers of my car had the same problem. Never had another problem with the car.

Re: 997 Recall in the UK

I don't know for sure if there are any parameters to the recall but from the sound of the letter it must be certain serial numbers / build dates. For what it's worth the two guys that have received letters both have Carrera S's.

Re: 997 Recall in the UK

Thanks for the info. Correct me if I'm wrong but at a recent factory tour I noticed "Mercedes" stamped on an engine part and I thought it was the crank case?? They use outside vendors for certain engine parts. They may have some "splain'n to do Lucy!"

Re: 997 Recall in the UK

That's the part that goes to the upcoming 4-door sedan not the 911.

Right OK, I was wrong. I clarified with the other owner that was on the tour with me and he said it was the transmission for the 997 that had Mercedes stamped on it(this was a vendor they used) Now I recall....

Re: 997 Recall in the UK

Guys this is not a hoax. Just called into my dealership to get them to top my oil level as i was passing and as i drove into the workshop there was a 997s like mine up on the ramp with the engine taken out.I said to the technician working on the car "why have you taken the engine out on a new 997s"He said "a crankshaft recall problem"Blimey "i said
"i hope mine is ok"He then went to a list with about 10 chassis numbers on it and checked my number wasnt on his list which fortunately it wasnt.According to the service guy there is only a certain batch of cars affected by this, but nevertheless not exactly nice to see

    Another

Re: 997 Recall in the UK

    try again

Re: 997 Recall in the UK

I checked out with my service manager somewhere in Florida and he tells me that selected 997 and 997S to US specifications were subject to a similar recall. He checked the VIN on my 997S and said it was not affected. It seems this notice went out some weeks ago prior to the US Boxster launch. He also said all owners had been informed, strange that no mention has been made of that fact on this thread.
The recall may have involved very few cars.
Now 2098 miles and every day it just gets better. Whoaaa.

Re: 997 Recall in the UK

Today I checked with service department at my dealer in Thousand Oaks, CA. Same story. Only a limited number of cars were possibly affected. My 997S was not one of them.
