But this time of the year its all about the cup car and some small drives with the GT2😎⛱⛱

Guess, that's far more entertaining anyways... Smiley

Not sure what that facelift is all about, which target group are they after... solely customers that will renew their lease contract after three years?

As an example here but not sure about other countries in the region, they lowered the price structure of the fat Panny. they surely want to sell more Smiley

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Panamera (2016)

Imagine this e motor in a 911TurboS with a little battery for short "bursts" only

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Panamera (2016)

Always interest me that Porsche does not reuse the rear e-motor on the 918 but develop another one for the hybrid cars with less HP. Probably for cost reasons.

Also not sure if there is enough room in the engine compartment to slot in the extra few inches worth of inline e-motor between the engine and transmission. 992 is supposed to have been designed and provisioned for it.

But to me, the most obvious and logical solution to hybridizing 911s will be to keep the rear drivetrain, but take out the centre drive shaft to the front, and use that spot for batteries. Front drive will be electric only, either re-using the 918's 127hp front drive, or go 800V and uses the Taycan's front drivetrain.

Weight increase would of course be a problem. My rough estimate would be ~200kg Battery capacity would be around where the 918 was 6.8kW, there is less volume in the centre tunnel so smaller battery but with newer tech it will likely be  denser.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Panamera (2016)

I think it's a question if they wanna be able to do 30-40 km range pure electric or just use it as a performance enhancer. For a 911 I would hope for the latter - the smallest possible battery placed in the front with 400nm /136HP on the drivetrain for boost if needed - then charged again automatically. Maybe you can build a mode where it helps coasting to reach a crazy number for the first 100 km average consumption for marketing purposes. Basically a 4S with nearly 600 HP and a Turbo with nearly 800hp. I would buy it ! A all electric 911 I would not....

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Panamera (2016)

I can’t wait for an all electric 911. I would not want the extra weight and compromise of the ICE motor.  Seems like a crazy amount of complexity for little reward. This hybrid stuff is from when we did not have any idea that an electric motor alone would power anything other than a golf cart. I just don’t get it. Makes zero sense to me, like fence sitting and not deciding which one way to go.  Worst of both worlds.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Panamera (2016)

unless the technology evolves fast to different kind of batteries - it's pretty crazy for 1 person mostly to need +2 tons of limited raw materials to accelerate and de-accelerate going  from A to B wasting much energy just to move it's weight.

That's how you see it. I see it as BEST of both world. The car retains the soul of a normal car yet can have the ability of a EV and all it's benefits.

Hybrid cars are the cars bridging the gap between normal cars and pure electric, until such time when electric make sense. Right now, they sort of do but not quite yet as the infrastructure hasn't caught up. Once infrastructure caught up, then hybrids can be retired.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Panamera (2016)

    +2

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Panamera (2016)

    +3

Hybrid complements "Sports"cars perfectly, retains the best of ICE and gains the best of EV.

an EV 911? why even bother... it wouldn't be a 911 anymore.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Panamera (2016)

Porsche's completely fucked up Panamera model scheme.

Fastest one is called turbo S.

Most powerful one is also called turbo S, but not that same one, but a different one with added hybrid drivetrain. But they also neutered the gas engine from that turbo S and make this turbo S only slightly more powerful than the old one in the old turbo S.

Face lifted turbo is only 690hp, old one is 680hp. What's the point? I am still trying to figure out the styling differences between this new one vs my old one. As far as I can tell, the only difference is the new one has a higher resolution PCM screen. That's it.

Price for the fastest turbo S is CAD$202,400, and the most powerful one is CAD$214,600. In the grand scheme of things, the new turbo S e-hybrid is a great deal, only CAD$12,200 more for all the extra batteries and hybrid stuff, more bang for the buck so to speak.

I config a new one to be an exact match to my current one, it's only like CAD$3000 more. Not bad.

Fusion...always "just" a couple of decades away. Smiley

No fusion reactor design has produced more fusion power output than the electrical power input, so it kind of defeats the purpose of such a reactor. Smiley

The most promising project ITER, an international collaboration of more than 35 nations, is expected to produce first plasma around 2025. This still doesn't meant that fusion will be commercially usable, the expected Q = 10 fusion energy gain factor won't be reached fast, if ever. Smiley So many challenges.

Meaning: I'm not sure if you or me are going to live long enough to experience the commercialization of nuclear fusion. Smiley

Never seizes to amaze me how short sighted we are, if the main governments of the world would of pulled resources together years ago we would of had nuclear fusion reactors by now, something that would of impacted the world more than the invention of fire or the steam engine... cheap unlimited clean energy, yet here we are, climate change and all.

Instead of putting trillions into weapons, we could put that money into clean energy development.

Clean unlimited energy could pave the path to our extraterrestrial future, as incredible this may sound.

If all big nations would work on it without any hidden agendas, this would mean a lot for humanity.

This planet is getting too small for us.

I actually know a little about ITER, as an old friend from grad school married one its prior directors. Large scientific consortia have had tremendous success in the west... LHC, human genome, LIGO, ISS. I am optimistic.
