    Family car - Volvo XC90

    Guys,

don't hit me but I have another family van option in my head. As you know we are thinking about a Tesla but the non-fold-able last seat row is kind a no-go.

Actually my Mercedes dealer told me that Volvo makes currently the biggest competition. I never thought about it but after he said this I went straight to the dealer and checked the car.

It looks gorgeous and it comes with a 400HP Hybrid - BUT, it is based on a 2liter 4-cylinder which produces 320HP. The car runs excellent, very smooth, quiet, fast. Consumption on the high-way is rather high (13 liter) as the hybrid is not supporting after 130 km/h. They also have a Diesel, but this only produces 235HP, also based on 2 liter 4-cylinder. Even this car feels much stronger than the 235HP, it has a compressor which kicks the Turbo to avoid any gap. This works quiet impressively. Car feels light and fast (I know, the numbers are telling different, but it feels really fast). My problem - It is less the feel of having a small 4 cylinder, than knowing about. My brain just tells me that I should not drive such a small engine, neither as Diesel nor as Hybrid. Smiley.

The leather, the appliances, the cockpit (almost like Audi, map in the cockpit) are top-notch. The assistants are excellent. The tablet acts like a iPad. Shortly said - it feels like a mix between a Tesla and a Mercedes GLS. The car interior and exterior is up to my taste. But the engine options kind of suck, even though, they feel right while driving. Check yourself:

So - what would you guys suggest?

Re: Family car - Volvo XC90

Few days ago I was driving the XC90 and it is a very nice car. I would choose it before GLE or Tesla X. Nice interior, nice finish, pure electrical mode is nice if you don´t need to go more then 30 km a day, which isn´t the case for 90% of us.

Re: Family car - Volvo XC90

I like how the new Volvo XC90 looks but it is too expensive for what it offers, the engine choices are just ridiculous. I do not know what kind of rebates the Volvo dealers give, maybe this is where you can score an interesting deal but overall, I don't know. The most powerful hybrid seems to be the only solution which makes sense but I'm not so sure how good and reliable the tech is. Volvo has been reborn, kind of, so either everything is of very good quality or it will do down the drain fast. Be careful!

Mercedes? I only like the G63 and maybe the GLS63.

BMW? The X5M is a nice performer but I got bored with that typical BMW design, don't know why.

Range Rover? Expensive. A local dealer has a brand-new Range Rover Sport Supercharged HSE Dynamic (510 hp version) for 126k EUR (financing rate is 1200 EUR a month, 25k EUR down payment, 96 months). Not exactly cheap.

Good luck with your search but it ain't easy.

I think we'll all have to get used to the idea that engines are getting smaller.
It's not even the future, it's already the present for those manufacturers who have made the change and the others will have to follow.
To coin a phrase, 2 litres are the new 3+ litres. indecision

My wife's parents have one on order, I think it's a fabulous looking product, inside and out. The T8 performance is pretty good and I didn't find the 4-cil engine as disturbing as you would expect. They got a 10% rebate if I'm not mistaken.

I agree, it's a beautiful truck both inside and out and drives quite nicely. 85% of my driving is city driving and the rest a 275km trek to our country place. I could live with the little hybrid engine for that. It IS a people mover after all, not a sportscar...

Fantastic interior and innovative things for kids put it high on my list when I replace my ML.

How big are the third row seats? GLS size or Q7 size?

Re: Family car - Volvo XC90

Bigger than the old one. The one thing is if you get the Bowers & Wilkins stereo the speakers are right against the person's head.

Re: Family car - Volvo XC90

The Volvo it´s much smaller than GLS, the GLE is the one to compare and I believe you would be better with GLE with AMG kit in & out. Now the Volvo might see a good deal, but in long term Mercedes will be the best option when the time comes to sell it. You also have powerful engines on GLE to chooose from and this new model look much better than previous one.

The closest comparison is the Q7 .  The Volvo looks very nice , elegant .... but it will remain a Volvo ! I see tons around here , as I do new Q7 .

If you looks at the C90, it means you look at the bigger SUV . Why not check the SQ7 .  A friend got the regular Q7 in all back , ( front grill, roof bars , side protection )  It looks pretty good  . ( mine is white )  In the SQ7 version it must be very nice looking .   I know your wife does not like it , but if you consider the XC90, give the Q7 a chance , test drive it . As soon as I was behind the wheel of that one, all others felt '' old'' .  The RWS does marvels .

Re: Family car - Volvo XC90

Don't do it. I am still trying to decide which is the worst value for money car I've ever driven: Volvo or Range Rover (the big one). I think that the Autobiography was the worst value for money but I wouldn't want to ever drive a Volvo again for sure. I can't imagine anyone who has ever owned a proper German car to feel anything but dissapointment from any Volvo model. And the RR...what a disappointment...

With respect I disagree, it all depends on your expectations. IF you expect a Volvo to drive like a Porsche then disappointment will definitely follow. If you expect an XC-90 to achieve off road achievements of a Range Rover then again it won't happen.

If however you want reliable, exceptionally comfortable, relaxing and safe transport then that's Volvo's area of expertise. SWMBO has great difficulty finding a car she truly feels comfortable in due to back and hip issues and she is vertically challenged. She feels that the V40 I have as my commuting transport is the most comfortable seat she has ever had, and we've tried many many cars to find one she is happy with. It is also a far superior car in every way to my previous VW Golf based Octavia. We also tried Audi's A3, the latest VW Golf, and last year even the BMW 3 series Touring and we both prefer the V40.

Re: Family car - Volvo XC90

Guys - many thanks for all your feedbacks. It is amazing, I thought you will bash me for coming up with a Volvo. On the other hand - as the thread ended in serious boobs and cars pictures I guess I'm on the right way

We will have tomorrow the T8 Hybrid again for a whole day. After that I will make up my mind. As I said, the car has its values. The T8 doesn't feel nor sound as a 4-cylinder - it behaves very grown up and driving it through the city with almost no noise is fascinating. The D5 (Diesel), sounds really like a 4 cylinder, but even this car it behaves like a bigger one, certainly not like the T8, but maybe like a 3.0 Diesel.

As someone here said - we have to get used to less cylinders. The question I have is, do I have to get used to it today or maybe in 3 years with the next decision coming up.

    Keep you guys posted.

The SQ7 sounds extremely good for a V8 diesel as well. Very cool car imo, but a lot more expensive than any XC90 I assume.

Re: Family car - Volvo XC90

Actually, the SQ7 isn't a bad alternative at all, I would probably choose it over the XC90. Not sure however how good the offers are, Audi's Q7 deals aren't exactly amazing right now, the car is in high demand in Germany.

The SQ7 would be from the paper facts my first choice. The problem is, that we don't like the Q7 look at all. This car was disqualified even ahead of test driving.
