    Haha first world problem

I buy a car. It takes too long to get to me. I just go buy a second car instead.

    Re: 356 Speedster (1958)

I have been there, done that with regards to getting a second car..........

While waiting for the delay on the 918 I bought a Speciale......

While my F12 was in the bodyshop for a few months I bought a Huracan to fill up the empty spot in the garage.........

Most recently when I had my 3.6 in the shop for a a bit I bought a 968...........that was back in October. The 968 didn't arrive till later November and I already got my 3.6 back but now the 968 is in the shop getting restored.............I haven't even driven it yet lol

Taycan is placeholder for Plaid S.

I might get a Tesla when they finally realize their interior is not up to par for the price range. I also don't want a giant Chinese touch screen monitor dominating the interior.

But yes, the Taycan is just a place holder. I am waiting for the Cross Turismo. Still can't decide if I want a 4S or a turbo.

The 4S I am driving now is pretty good and quick enough, it certainly doesn't need more power, Advantage of a turbo over the 4S is standard full leather interior which I can option on the 4S.

Wow - and the "new" 1956 Speedster has a Carrera engine? smileyblush

I wish it had a 4 Cam engine - that would be 2.5x the price. I will buy a 4 Cam eventually as part of the 356 "set". Photos may be a while given Covid etc, but they will come!

Would you look for a car that originally had a 4-cam motor or add one to a car that came with a standard motor?  I imagine the number of original cars is tiny, no?

Must be difficult to source an engine - they don’t share any parts with the standard motor, do they?

First preference would always be a car with its original engine. As you say, they are completely different from a normal engine and much more specialised to maintain. However, there are a number of them around - but they are pricey. The "Carrera" engine was originally 1600 but in its swansong it was 2.0L in the Carrera 2.

Those 4-cam motors are little marvels.  The 911 didn't have a road-going 4-cam motor until the water-cooled era (MY 1999), I think.  I know there are some interesting options for the 356 cars now (there is an outfit that makes a 4-cylinder version of a 911 motor with over 2.0L displacement, but only 2-cams), but I can't imagine anything cooler than an original 4-cam.

    Is this outfit well regarded?:

Here's an auction for an original motor that did not reach reserve, though bid to $220k:

Those little wonderful engines take about 150 hours to rebuild and then just setting the timing can take north of 10-12 hours. You're looking at $25-35k in just labour. But the sound! Oh what a great sound.
