Porsche extends the Taycan model range (Taycan 2WD)

With the new Taycan, Porsche is launching the fourth variant of its first all-electric sports saloon. The new model lines up alongside the Taycan Turbo S, Taycan Turbo and Taycan 4S. It features rear-wheel drive and is available with two sizes of battery: with the standard Performance Battery, the new entry-level model delivers up to 300 kW (408 PS) in overboost mode with Launch Control; this increases to an output of up to 350 kW (476 PS) with the optional Performance Battery Plus. Nominal power is 240 kW (326 PS) or 280 kW (380 PS) respectively.

As the youngest member of the model family, the Taycan includes, right from the start, the new features introduced in the other versions at the model year changeover. For instance, the Plug & Charge function enables convenient charging and payments without the need for cards or an app: as soon as the charging cable is plugged in, the Taycan establishes encrypted communication with the Plug & Charge-compatible charging station. The charging process then starts automatically. Payments are also processed automatically.

As on the other variants, optional equipment includes a colour head-up display and an on-board charger with a charging capacity of up to 22 kW. With Functions on Demand (FoD), Taycan drivers can purchase various additional convenience or assistance functions as required. Alternatively, they are able to book them for a limited period. This works after the vehicle has been delivered as well as for the sports car’s original configuration. Activation online means that it is not necessary to visit the workshop. Currently, this is possible for the Porsche Intelligent Range Manager (PIRM), Power Steering Plus, Active Lane Keeping Assist and Porsche InnoDrive functions.

    Choice of two batteries
A single-deck Performance Battery with a gross capacity of 79.2 kWh is fitted as standard. The two-deck Performance Battery Plus is available as an option. Its gross capacity is 93.4 kWh. Range, in accordance with WLTP, is up to 431 or up to 484 kilometres respectively.

The Taycan accelerates from a standing start to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds, whichever battery is specified. Its top speed is also 230 km/h in both configurations, while its maximum charging capacity is up to 225 kW (Performance Battery) or up to 270 kW (Performance Battery Plus). This means that both batteries can be charged from five to 80 per cent SoC in 22.5 minutes and that power for a further 100 kilometres is achieved after only five minutes.

Innovative electric motor and dynamic performance
Impressive acceleration, tractive power typical of sports cars and outstanding continuously available power – the new point of entry to the Taycan model line-up also features these strengths.

The permanently excited synchronous motor on the rear axle has an active length of 130 millimetres and is therefore the same length as the one fitted to the Taycan 4S. The pulse-controlled inverter on the rear axle operates at up to 600 amps.

In addition to the permanently excited synchronous motor on the rear axle, the drive architecture also includes a two-speed transmission. Just as with its siblings in the model range, its highlights include intelligent charging management as well as exemplary aerodynamics. With a Cd value from 0.22, its aerodynamics make a significant contribution to its low energy consumption and therefore its long range. Maximum recuperation power is 265 kW.

Purist exterior design with Porsche DNA
With its purist design, the Taycan signals the beginning of a new era. At the same time, it retains the unmistakable Porsche design DNA. From the front, the electric sports car looks particularly low and wide, with highly contoured wings. Its silhouette is shaped by its sporty roof line sloping downward to the rear, while its highly sculpted side sections are also characteristic. The sleek cabin, the strikingly drawn-in C-pillars, and the pronounced shoulders of its wings result in a sharply emphasised rear, typical of the brand. These features are complemented by innovative elements such as the glass-look lettering for the Porsche logo in the rear light bar.

Distinguishing features of the Taycan within its model family include aerodynamically optimised 19-inch Taycan Aero wheels and black anodised brake callipers. The front apron, side sills and rear diffuser in black are the same as those on the Taycan 4S. LED headlights are fitted as standard.

    Unique interior design
The cockpit of the Taycan signalled the start of a new era in 2019 with its clear structure and completely new architecture. The free-standing curved instrument cluster forms the highest point on the dashboard. This places a clear focus on the driver axis. Other elements include a central 10.9-inch infotainment display and an optional display for the front passenger.

As standard, the Taycan comes with a partial leather interior as well as front comfort seats with eight-way electrical adjustment. The car features two luggage compartments: 84 litres at the front, and up to 407 litres at the rear.

The Taycan is also the first Porsche model available with an entirely leather-free interior. Interiors made from innovative recycled materials underscore the sustainable concept of the electric sports car.

    Centrally networked chassis systems
Porsche uses a centrally networked control system for the Taycan chassis. The integrated Porsche 4D Chassis Control analyses and synchronises all chassis systems in real time. Both the standard steel-spring suspension of the Taycan and the optional adaptive air suspension with three-chamber technology are supplemented by the PASM (Porsche Active Suspension Management) electronic damper control system.

The adaptive air suspension is also equipped with a Smartlift function. This allows the Taycan to be programmed so that it raises its ride height automatically at certain recurring locations such as road humps or garage driveways. The Smartlift function can also actively influence the vehicle’s height on motorway journeys and can adjust the vehicle’s ride height for the best possible compromise between efficiency and driving comfort.

The Taycan is equipped as standard with six-piston aluminium monobloc fixed-calliper brakes at the front and four-piston aluminium monobloc fixed-calliper brakes at the rear. The internally vented brake discs are 360 mm diameter at the front and 358 mm at the rear. The brake callipers have a black anodised finish.
A further option is the high-performance Porsche Surface Coated Brake (PSCB). Its discs have a diameter of 410 mm and 365 mm front and rear.

    Successful year for the Taycan
Porsche has made a successful start to the all-electric age, delivering just over 20,000 Taycans to customers worldwide in 2020. In Norway, the Taycan currently accounts for 70 per cent of all Porsche models sold, and the start of November saw the one thousandth Norwegian Taycan customer receive their car as Porsche sales in Norway have more than doubled. The electric sports car has already received around 50 international awards, above all in its principal markets of Germany, the US, the UK and China. The new rear-wheel drive Taycan also holds the Guinness World Record™ for the longest drift with an electric car, having been driven sideways non-stop for exactly 42.171 kilometres.

The first rear-wheel drive Taycans will make their way to dealerships from the middle of March 2021. Prices in Germany start from 83,520 euros including value-added tax.

Personal comment: Price tag is cheaper than the information I had previously, so I guess Porsche really wants people to buy this model.

Sorry but what a bunch of words with little passion or meaning for most. Longest drift by an electric car?  It’s a luxury car with a battery. Yes the price is low for a Porsche but who can buy a Porsche without options?  They will sell many and it is a nice car.

Re: Porsche extends the Taycan model range (Taycan 2WD)

Great news (except for the color). Leasing rates for the 4S (€90k) have dropped significantly also (€998, 3 years, 10.000km, €4,5k one time)  +tax. Someone told me that is because Porsche needs to sell more Taycans to meet fleet emission regulations.

Re: Porsche extends the Taycan model range (Taycan 2WD)

Lots of ink about great sales in Norway (Tesla too I know), but they do have very generous subsidies for EVs.

This is a recent critique of Norway's approach: ( for context, a Canadian paper, and the writer is based in Rome and usually quite green-leaning).

Regardless, it's still a Porsche and handles like a Porsche too. That's the standard Porsche is making their cars adhere to.

Porsches aren't basic transportation. Electric or not. If someone is looking for a transportation tool from point A to point B, they can always get a Camry or a Tesla if someone prefers electric.

Other than expense and luxury it does not excel at much else. It does not drive faster, efficiently or have better tech. If you can get a Camry or otherwise which is better for less money that is not such a bad deal. It is not that the Porsche is not different - it simply is not worth it. I would expect more for paying more.

Lease rates are still too high in my opinion but this is not only Porsche...also other manufacturers. As if they talked to each other to push lease rates up. Smiley The reason is understandable: Residual value is a huge risk for manufacturers because the high tech of today could be obsolete in three years. Sad but true.

... this is the story of my P100D. I really like EVs , but I'll not buy another one, rather lease it

Politics needs to stay out of cars. I have mine for pure fun and speed. It is not for any other reason.
And yes, the politics here are not benefiting Americans as well as they could. To put it mildly.

You take the car to a Tesla Service Center. There is 8 of them within one hour of where we live.

Tesla has a lot of some service centers, although not as many as others,  and depending on where you live it might be far away or close (mine is 20min away). Booking a service appointment only works through the Tesla app; waiting time for me has been month in the past and there is (almost) no one you can call (if you really need help, call the sales department) . Meanwhile it seems to have improved though. In case you have an "uncommon" problem it may take several month until it gets fixed, which - to some extend - is the result of the "continuous improvement approach" of Tesla   (I had such a problem and it it took 2yrs to get fixed).

The Tesla dealer is the closest car dealer to me. When you get the car you also get the app on your phone. If you need service in the future or immediately you use the app to schedule service or road side assistance. In my case I just stop in without the app and they fix everything in minutes. In my case I had a piece of trim I noticed was loose. 2 minutes later is was done. The only other need it had was when I screwed up taking off my snow tires last year and left a small centering ring on the wheel hub. Not their fault. The car made a clicking sound like a CV joint. They immediately took the wheel off, found the issue, and sent me on my way. No charge in either case. More importantly none of the failures my past cars have had could happen because this car does not have those failing parts.  So the question is what exactly do you think will fail?  We have heard no reports of lots of motor or battery failures. There are no oil changes or scheduled maintenance.  Do you feel comfortable adding windshield washer liquid?  I recall the Porsche dealer charging me to replace a turn signal bulb. Thought he would just pop it in - then he wanted money - like $50.
Almost 17k mile and zero issues. None.
To celebrate some recent job security I bought myself a Tesla home charger. I installed it myself yesterday cause I’m insane.   Now I can charge at 42 miles per hour rather than the 28 I had been getting using the supplied cable. Not too bad.

I have (lately) seldom been able to make anything happen in such an agreeably short amount of time.  The most recent issue was a failed window regulator on the 2018 P100D Model S.

Our Model S is my wife's car.  She has absolutely no interest in using a phone app to service her car.  The service-initiation function has been left to me.  I can't put the app on my phone because HIPAA-like Tesla vehicle-security forbids it.  Fortunately (unfortunately?) the Tesla service center is 5 minutes away from the office.  So I go there to sort it out.

I HATE Tesla's service procedures.  Their personnel are quite helpful (some are almost charming), but there is no way to converse with any human being unless one makes an in-person visit to the service center.  Try as one might, there is no known phone number not answered by a robot. It's quite unreasonable for a customer service center to behave this way, IMHO.

Once upon a time, I was all set to go full-Tesla for our daily drivers as they seem perfect for that duty.  The gradual change to impersonal, fire-walled, customer service has moved me ever farther away from that opinion.  The Porsche dealer may not be deeply steeped in EV knowledge, but their telephone still works as usual.

I also recognize the shortcomings of the Taycan's competitive position in the marketplace.  This leads to my interest in Lucid Motors.  One can put down a small refundable deposit (US$ 1,000) to indicate serious interest.  I have done so.  Their announced service center locations remind me of early-days Tesla which I found to be relatively pleasant.  I need to have a thorough conversation with them soon to see just how they plan to arrange the service end of things in places far flung from their points of presence.

The 2 strikes against the Taycan that I would like to remedy are cargo space and range.  The Lucid Air speaks to both.

Very interesting insight, thanks Mike. Smiley

So I guess there is some gap between Tesla and Porsche which could be filled by others.

I was thinking about something pretty ingenious (maybe not): How about taking Tesla cars and modify them, including offering some sort of VIP customer service? Of course these cars would be much more expensive but you would get what you pay for, excellent performance, extremely high quality (all Tesla models would be revised and improved with high quality materials to the specs of the customers) and a personal VIP treatment/concierge.

There could be a market for this stuff.

Keep in mind there is no regular service for these cars and I don’t see that failures will be as prevalent as with other types of cars to start with. That said they strike me as more than capable of addressing this type of issue with a new and more effective approach than we have seen in the past.  Keep in mind their current system was likely implemented with the best of intentions to revolutionize the customer experience so if there is something they can improve I doubt they will hold back. I think they have the money to do this.

Re: Porsche extends the Taycan model range (Taycan 2WD)

I don't think thet implemented the current system with customer experience in mind, firewalling customers from real customer service people is never a positive thing, but rather the reason was cost cutting as Tesla was burning throught money fast, and this is another of the cost cutting measures. But I think they will improve it more and more as they sell more and more cars though.

I think they understand there are good and bad ways to save money. The Apple store experience is worse imho. If I don’t have a computer to schedule a visit first going in person is impossible. They won’t even talk to you without first getting an appointment. This was pre covid. I have not been back. Assume it is the same still.
Given an emphasis on customer service these days I really think Tesla thought they were doing the right thing. For me, for example, it has worked great. Of course I’m also the guy who brings these types of people a dozen donuts in the morning when I come in.
