    997 vrs 996

    Hello,
I currently have an 03 C4S with 6500. miles. Black/Black. Bought new and I love the car.
I was in Atlanta last week and drove a Black 997. Great car. I hope not to offend anyone, but what is the big deal? I thought the car would be more exciting than the 996. Don't get me wrong, it is a fantastic car. But I wouldn't trade my C4S for a somewhat stripped down Carrera S.
Am I missing something? I don't know very much about the engines in either car. If someone could kindly explain why this car (997) is superior, I would love the knowledge!

    Re: 997 vrs 996

One's a driver's car. After 4 years of driving 4WD Audis, I remembered what I love about rear wheel drive today. It was pouring down with rain here in London, and I pressed the accelerator on an empty roundabout, and feeling that rear end jump away was awesome!

Did you try the standard Carrera? I guess it would not feel much more powerful than your C4S. Did you really push it on some familiar roads? I don't think a test drive really does justice to the differences IMO.

    Re: 997 vrs 996

Until you can detect it for yourself, it is superior because guys with much more professional experience than you have say it is superior. All professional car experts say Porsche did a great thing to the evolution of the 911 by making the 997/S.

If someone wants to get really smart about Pcars, they would go to a Porsche Driver's Experience, or local PCA driver's ed. Then the differences between all the models might start to be more understandable to that person.

I was told 99% of the drivers would not know the difference between a 997 and 996. The 997S is a diffent story with its additional hp and torque. However you need to open your wallet wide to experience the difference.

    See: http://www.germancarfans.com/news.cfm/newsid/2040628.001/porsche/1.html

for a dozen very detailed pages of why the 997 is an improvement over the 996.

    Re: 997 vrs 996

I just sold my C4S with the intention of buying a 997S. I realised that I had missed rear wheel drive and the more sensitive steering that goes with it. I LOVE the feeling of the back end hanging out! something that's really hard to do on pulbic roads.

My previous car was an Audi S4. Great car and the C4S felt like the natural successor, but now I know different.

    Re: 997 vrs 996

Perhaps you should compare your c4s with the 997 c2s and you will find a huge difference. The c2s is a better car in so many ways.As said this is a drivers car which allows you to have some fun ,the new suspension set up(pasm)is brilliant, the sports chrono pack awesome, the whole feel of the car is faster ,lighter, more nimble, and even higher quality.Did you look at the interior closely?i think its a huge improvement on the 996 interior.I may be slightly biased as i own a c2s but if you read the experts driving reports, they all say the c2s is a much superior car and in many ways the best 911 ever

    Re: 997 vrs 996

I think roadie1's point was not so much about the tramission differences (2wd vs 4wd) but the generation differences. And if that's the case, I think he has a very good point. Of course the 997 is a better car if you're a journo and you've just been handed the keys to a test model. But if you're a customer and its YOUR money, is the 997 really that much better?

A good question, but one which can be asked of a lot of things in our consumer society. I, for one, whould be happy to "make do" with a 996 C4S.

    Re: 997 vrs 996

Between the plain jane 997 and the 996 C4S, there is no comparison, the C4S IS the superior car.
However, the 997S is a big improvement, mainly in HP/TQ, suspension. The 997S is the better of the 996 C4S.
That being said, moving from a C4S to a 997/997S is more of a lateral move IMO, as opposed to a dramatic step forward. I won't be trading mine anytime soon, the 997 GT3/TT, now that's a different story!

    Re: 997 vrs 996

The gains of the C2S over the C4S are NOT compelling...certainly not worth the price differential.

Which is why a GT3 will be replacing my C4S...

Porsche REALLY needs to bring the 20 mm chassis option incl. the limited slip differential to the US market.
It makes a GT3 with PSM out of the 997 Carrera S and I'm not exaggerating. I'm a 4WD lover and I may go for a 997 Turbo when available. But til then, I enjoy with all my heart the 355 horses on a real fun racer.
I'm sorry that a lot of you guys will never know what I'm talking about but the 20 mm option is a MUST have in my opinion and I really urge Porsche to offer it for the US market. People will LOVE it. Maybe Porsche is just afraid they couldn't sell a 997 C4S anymore to justify the extra cost for the 4WD (although most people want the look, not necessarily the 4WD).

    Re: 997 vrs 996

Indeed RC...that might well change the abacus.

Be careful: no 4WD, no PSM and at least 200 kg lighter.

If the turbo turns out to be as good as I think it will be, I will trade my 997S for it. I think I'll keep mine for at least 3 years though.

Don't forget "at least 50hp more"...

    Re: 997 vrs 996

I'd buy a 997 turbo right now if available.

    Re: 997 vrs 996

warning appreciated....there is a sense of challenge in taking on the GT3....that's healthy.

    Re: 997 vrs 996

You can think of the 997S or the 997-C4S or the 997TT as an everyday car, but after driving the 996GT3, I know very well that the GT3 is not an everyday car. It is an excellent car, if you have another car to drive on those days when it is raining or snowing.

    Re: 997 vrs 996

Price differential? The 997 C2S is $4000 less than the 996 C4S, and the C2 is $14,000 less. Of course, it might not make sense to trade a low mileage one or two year old C4S and take a financial hit, but if one is buying new, the choice is obvious.

    Re: 997 vrs 996

I have yet to see a 997S that is 4k less than a 996C4S. Mine came pretty loaded at 89k, most 997s are around the 100k mark.

    Re: 997 vrs 996

For my usage - I will not take 45k Euro in my hands to upgrade my 2 year old, 20000 km, 996 convertible to an 997S!

Yes the 997 is a great car but for me to close to the 996 to open my wallet for spending 45k Euro wich are gone in 2 years again. My car is a private fun car - no chance to reconcilate the lost.

Final decision - I will stay and enjoy the car I have and anytime, when Porsche will offer something which brings me a real plus, I will think again about an upgrade (maybe to an 997 TT).

    cheers, L@rs
