    Fantastic news!!!

Re: Porsche aims to fight for overall victories with an LMDh prototype

As you can all imagine, I'm very pleased indeed. However, there are some concerns I have that hopefully will be cleared up in the coming months as we get more news on the project.

Re: Porsche aims to fight for overall victories with an LMDh prototype

Some of the stuff that concerns me:

    1. The very obvious focus on "costs and cost control". Although this is completely understandable especially at this time, I would hope that at very least the focus also be on being very competitive .
    2. Engine: By obsessively focusing on cost, I'm concerned they go the road car route, whilst the opposition may go the bespoke racing engine option.
    3. I get all the cost savings requirements (I'm a manager) , but its expensive to go racing. If you cant afford it, then dont do it. Porsche must win. It cant go racing just to be another competitor.
    4. I'm not thrilled by the Spec chassis regulation.

Re: Porsche aims to fight for overall victories with an LMDh prototype

Spec chassis is one of the biggest cost control thing. Which also means the engine chassis combo will be compromise, where the chassis is not optimized for the engine.

Depending on the final engine formula by FIA and IMSA, they could have a bespoke racing engine, a la 919. Or they could adapt the 911's flat 6 and becomes the basis for future hybridized 911. The second option means they can amortize the engine cost onto real production stuff.

But Porsche's strength is handling tuning. They should be able to utilize their racing knowledge to make the spec chassis handle like no other.

I would not be surprised if there is already some form of prototype ripping around Weissach already.

Rumors say that the engine will be the V8 turbo from Cayenne, Panamera, A8, Bentayga, Continental and etc. Originally Porsche developed engine, its predecessor used in GrandAm

The basic chassis is basically the same for everyone, there is also a certain number of aerodynamic parts that are identical. (All Chassis are supplied by Multimatic, Oreca, Ligier or Dallara )

What about engine from the 918?

Havent heard about 918 engine as a platform. We will see.

More like the American side loves spec chassis, see indy, stockcar, etc.

It's one way to put 'parity' into the series, and also capping the chassis developmental cost.

It 'could' work. Since the race car will be a hybrid, accessory can be driven off the electrical system, just like the street car. And the engine was derived from a race engine in the first place. And it is light and compact.

The problem is Porsche doesn't need to promote the 918 anymore, there is no point in developing that. engine further.

Also, depending on whether the series will cap horsepower output, the 918 engine could be making too much HP already, detuning it will be a waste, and it doesn't raise the low end torque much on the other side of the equation.

Turbo-ed V8s, or turbo-ed flat 6s, on the other hand can easily be capped at a spec HP level, while maximizing the torque output at low rpm, which is advantageous for getting out of corners. One can easily figured out just about every competitors will be using a turbo engine so they won't have a low end torque deficit if they also uses turbo engine.

Agreed! Torque is going to be king given that it will be a  BoP series.
