Drove the 987s - thoughts and comparisons...
Formal launch is tomorrow here in the United States.
Went and drove the 987S today at lunch. Car had 19" Carrera S wheels, full leather, bi-xenons, and Bose (who cares about the radio anyway).
If I were buying a new car, I'd probably forgo the great (read: below invoice) price I would negotiate on a 986S and get this one instead. The 20hp is noticable. The exhaust note is intoxicating, while not Ferrari-like, it's definitely a noticable improvement over the MY03 exhaust update, which was also a large improvement over the pre-03 models.
The 19" wheel upgrade felt great and handled great (as it should). Felt much like my 18" non-030 suspension. This car did not have PASM, so I was riding stock. I would probably choose no PASM with the 19" wheels. With 18" wheels, I think PASM would help. Plus the ugly ride height would look a bit better.
The interior... Well, the full leather helped. I am not sure I like the new vents, but everything is looked much better in person. Very high quality. I wasn't able to check a std leather car. I still like the 986 interior a tad better. I think over time people will come to like the new one, and some already do.
The new std seats are nice. Very tall, in fact they went all the way to the top of the roll bar. Tall people (6'+) will probably like this. Footwell room seemed considerably bigger. The new pedals are nice too.
They had 4 new Boxsters, 2 Artic Silver (one 987, one 987S), a 987 Guards red, and the one I drove. All had the 19" wheels except the Artic Silver 986S had the stock 18"s.
Yes, bumperettes are already painted. Sorry Eric! You can make up for that by painting the new huge silver intakes.
The single tip coming out of the exhaust pipes (before it hits the tips) is larger than previous, but again, it doesn't seem to make sense since the old one had 2 outlets before it hit the tips. Speaking of tips, the S exhaust tips have to go. The base tips are odd too. I think this will be a popular replacement or upgrade.
The biggest disappointment is the center air inlet on the S. Completely COSMETIC. It goes nowhere! Air hits plastic... And comes right back out the front bumper. Sad. I guess with the monster air inlets on each side of the front bumper, the third radiator gets it from there instead?
Overall I think it's a nice improvement. Go drive one.
