Drove the 987s - thoughts and comparisons...

Formal launch is tomorrow here in the United States.

Went and drove the 987S today at lunch. Car had 19" Carrera S wheels, full leather, bi-xenons, and Bose (who cares about the radio anyway).

If I were buying a new car, I'd probably forgo the great (read: below invoice) price I would negotiate on a 986S and get this one instead. The 20hp is noticable. The exhaust note is intoxicating, while not Ferrari-like, it's definitely a noticable improvement over the MY03 exhaust update, which was also a large improvement over the pre-03 models.

The 19" wheel upgrade felt great and handled great (as it should). Felt much like my 18" non-030 suspension. This car did not have PASM, so I was riding stock. I would probably choose no PASM with the 19" wheels. With 18" wheels, I think PASM would help. Plus the ugly ride height would look a bit better.

The interior... Well, the full leather helped. I am not sure I like the new vents, but everything is looked much better in person. Very high quality. I wasn't able to check a std leather car. I still like the 986 interior a tad better. I think over time people will come to like the new one, and some already do.

The new std seats are nice. Very tall, in fact they went all the way to the top of the roll bar. Tall people (6'+) will probably like this. Footwell room seemed considerably bigger. The new pedals are nice too.

They had 4 new Boxsters, 2 Artic Silver (one 987, one 987S), a 987 Guards red, and the one I drove. All had the 19" wheels except the Artic Silver 986S had the stock 18"s.

Yes, bumperettes are already painted. Sorry Eric! You can make up for that by painting the new huge silver intakes.

The single tip coming out of the exhaust pipes (before it hits the tips) is larger than previous, but again, it doesn't seem to make sense since the old one had 2 outlets before it hit the tips. Speaking of tips, the S exhaust tips have to go. The base tips are odd too. I think this will be a popular replacement or upgrade.

The biggest disappointment is the center air inlet on the S. Completely COSMETIC. It goes nowhere! Air hits plastic... And comes right back out the front bumper. Sad. I guess with the monster air inlets on each side of the front bumper, the third radiator gets it from there instead?

Overall I think it's a nice improvement. Go drive one.

Here you can see how the cooling works.

Click the animation in the lower right corner.
According to this animation, the centre coolers gets it's air directly from the front?
Does the 986 have same cooler setup? I mean, with 3 coolers in front?

Re: Drove the 987s - thoughts and comparisons...

Why Porsche makes such a great car as the Boxster and then adds blatantly fake aluminum trim, cosmetic front center air intake,a cheesy gear shifter, tail pipes and ridiculous looking center air vents makes me sick. The trim design elements of the interior are atrocious. The weird and ugly dash vents seem like a way to visually punish 987 owners for not having purchased a 997.

What the heck ever happened to their motto of "Form Follows Function?"

The 987 should also come with the same gauges as the 997, but noooooo! Porsche likes to poke fingers in the eyes of their Boxster customers.

Why is it so difficult for Porsche to offer a MP3 player and a CD player that will playback CDR's? That pretty common gear now.

The Porsche interior design staff needs to be replaced. No one even wants to see their vomit like green interior, much less one with optional yellow seatbelts.

Is the factory water supply contaminated?

Or do they just believe that we are lucky to buy cars from them so we will accept just about anything they wish to pass off to us. LSD? Forget it, get these over priced yellow seatbelts instead!

Its really disheartening that the car is so good and that interior design trim and options are soooo baaad.

Re: Drove the 987s - thoughts and comparisons...

The center air inlet is only used for the Boxster S with the tiptronic which contains a 3rd cooler.

Thanks for the write up MY...I enjoyed it.

Yes, and I believe that a cooler can be added there for additional cooling at the track. This was the case with the 996 with manual gearbox. And from looking at your link, this might come in handy. If you are Rick Snyder, I've met you at the track and that extra cooling could come in handy

Nice animation, thanks for the link, but it seems that's only applicable if you have a TIP.

Hey Grant - I'm Stacey Snyder. Rick is my brother. Adding an additional cooler would be an interesting and valuable project.

    Good to meet you!!

    Stacey

Hi Stacey - nice to meet you too. Congrats on the new ride!
