This race should help clarify if Hamilton is merely very good or is he great.
It would not help F1 if GR can go out and dominate and I am sure that Hamilton has been saying this to the team in terms that are not to be misunderstood.

Seems that almost all drivers have the same opinion, Russel will be on the podium... and many even belive he can win... Also if you are looking the the odds on betting sites it seems that all belive that he will be almost on par with Bottas... I belive that we can have a surprise this wwekend, and looking at Bottas rescent pace and results, I belive that his pressure will only get biggter this weekand, as he MUST win this race. Otherwise

Don't discount Russell's ability to drive, he routinely qualifies the ultra uncompetitive Williams car into Q2.
Putting a driver into the Mercedes doesn't automatically means someone will have a great result. You put Stroll in there and he will still finish among the lower mid field.
If he get a great result Sunday, other teams might try to steal him from Mercedes.

Indeed and that does nothing to diminish the abilities of Russell. The entire Mercedes package allows very good drivers to become great. It now seems as if Hamilton set up an experiment to show that Bottas is a drag on the team. He has multiples of more experience with the car and is fourth fastest in FP1. That is not good for his future with Mercedes.

And Russell tops the chart for FP1.
Looking up and down the grid, quite a few drivers won't top the chart even in the Mercedes. Stroll is the first one, Latifi is another. Kvyat also couldn't, Giovanazzi also. Raikkonen is a maybe. Ocon is another maybe, Grojean and Magnussen are also in the maybe group. That's like almost half the grid that couldn't put the car on top.
Max definitely can top the chart, so does Leclerc. Bottas is a once in a while. Vettel a maybe, Ricciardo, Gasly, Norris all maybes. Albon, Perez have an outside shot.

Everybody is correct here, in my opinion Russel is the future star of F1, I was wating for him to get the chance ti show it, but that is not mutually exclusive to what spyderidol pointed out in that 99% of being the fastest on the track is driving a Mercedes.

The pressure will only grow after today… the thing is that russel has enough experience already even though not in a fast car… but the routine is there and he can show it off. Just imagine him after a few races when he sets up the car to his liking. Till now I am impressed, but TBH I saw that coming. And yes poor Bottas

tso:Whoopsy, I never intended to discount Russel. He is a hell of a driver, but I believe it does ask if Hamilton is that much better than anyone else. I guess we need to put Hamilton into another car, which will never happen.
I think that question is settled a looooooong time ago. He put Alonso in his place as a rookie driving a equal car against a 2 time defending world champion.
