    utterly pointless....

    Re: [2018] Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé(X290)

I wouldn't mind the drivetrain, if only it came in another shape. This whale looking thing remains hideous, but this in an E63 estate, yes please.

+1 one of the ugliest performance cars on sale today, inside and out. The drivetrain though 👀

Looking forward to this drive train in the G Wagen.

    Re: [2018] Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé(X290)

Where did the extra 250 NM come from when they combine the ice and EV?  Math?

The whole thing is a math puzzle. Shows the extreme length they must now go to I order to compete with a simple little electric motor or three.  My head is spinning from the complications and busy shapes and switches everywhere.  Are we to the point where we laugh out loud when we see people in these or worse, buy this thing.
    How is the autopilot?

Who did that?  No way did I mention or in any way suggest that company.  But I can see why the thought of that company drives people who make these types of purchases question their own judgement at times.

It is offset by the huge depreciation to come.  Can we make things more complicated?  Imagine repairing this in a few years.

The CLS is a much better looking car at a much lower cost.

Two speed transmission for the electric motor.  That's probably where the additional torque comes from and with the math seems a bit flaky.  Adding the torque curves together is complicated by an additional gear set.

Bosch is developing a continuously variable transmission for an electric motor. It's a very interesting concept and see an increase in performance whilst increasing range.

    Re: [2018] Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé(X290)

I don’t think electric motors work that way. Nor is torque measured depending on gears. Hmmm.  Strange

Having a hard time getting excited about this car. To each his own.

    Re: [2018] Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé(X290)

Electric motors are horribly inefficient at high rpm. Just look at any output plot of any electric motors, the output drops like a stone at the high end.

In a way, it's similar to an engine with a roots-type supercharger.

Anything to bring the operating rpm back down to the low end where the sweet spot is is a great thing.

Battery sitting kind of high for a performance vehicle. Smaller trunk too I guess. Anyone knows by how much smaller?

Some not. Look at the plaid power curve.  Flat to 20k rpm.
You are right about most of the others though.
Still, gas motors are horribly inefficient anytime they are running.
none of it explains the extra 250 Nm in the Mercedes. I’m guessing it’s a typo. Typically when you add the power of the two you end up with less power. I don’t think with torque you get to find extra torque when adding them.
What do you think the odds would be of all these crazy hp numbers if a certain EV had not started blowing away sports cars in a straight line 10 years ago?   I would argue we have done very well as consumers given the choices which have developed as a result.

    Re: [2018] Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé(X290)

Can you stop arguing just for arguing sake? For once?

ALL electric motors drops off their output at high rpm. It is just how things are.

Elon choose not to show THE WHOLE OUTPUT GRAPH!!!!

In any case, this is nothing gearing won't solve. He just set the 'redline' before the output cliff. 🤷🏻‍♂️

As for your 'extra' 250Nm, the simple explanation is that when you combine an engine with electric motors, the numbers aren't 2+2=4 anymore.

The 918 has a V8 plus 2 motors. The V8 makes 540 Nm by itself, the front motor makes 210 Nm and the rear motor makes 350 Nm, for a 'combined' total of 1125 Nm. But the actual maximum combined output is 1280Nm. But that's in 7th gear. In third gear it's actually at 1066 Nm and it's only 917 Nm in 1st gear.

PHEV has its own use case as the charging stations are limited in certain areas.

I welcome this powertrain as I think this will be a great addition for a G63.

That's correct.  Torque is measured at the crank (or output shaft of e-motor).  Otherwise, there would be a different torque rating in every gear.  Peak torque of e-motor happens from 0 rpm and 2-speed gearbox would ordinarily reduce torque at wheels in taller gear, but improves efficiency and output letting motor run at lower speed at high vehicle speeds as Whoopsy said...

This opens the door for manufacturers to bring back manual gearboxes Smiley

A bit pointless but look at the possibility, at least a 2-speed manual, maybe they could do 3 or 4. Just have to adjust gearing or limit the max rpm of the EV motor SmileySmileySmiley

I agree but it doesn't come in full AMG-guise. Quickest you can get is a CLS 53

It is a turbo engine most likely it goes into overboost in certain conditions. I think the figures that Mercedes put on the graph are crap because as they have a turbo engine they can increase boost anytime they want and can produce +50% more torque (until the engine breaks down of course). Hence for marketing they go for these combinations that they announce. Torque limit in lower gears is to avoid wheel spin and mechanical stress I think.

I won’t argue that I’m not arguing. Perhaps if you look again you will see I did not say the power curve did not drop off - of course it has to at some time, but in this case not until 200 mph so good enough for me and better than other EVs.  Then I agreed with you that many including my model3 also drop off.  The rest is math and gearing I guess. Thanks for the explanation you think is the correct one. At least you got to mention the 918.
It’s called a discussion. Not really an argument but I won’t try to convince you of anything.   Cheers
