Re: Porsche Confirms New 911 RSR GTE Car for 2017

Hi Olli- I followed that race and was most disappointed, however, to be fair, their BoP is not very favorable at the moment. They expect better BoP for the N24h, but I don't expect them to be on top even for that race.

As for the GTE: I don't have much hope. I understand Porsche's decision from a purely  short-term business and fiscal optics. I lament their desire to win seems to have gone out the window. In the end, that is what racing is all about. Winning is the most important  thing. When you loose the will to do that, then you are merely just another participant. Porsche was never "just another participant". Now it seems to be satisfied to be just that.

Re: Porsche Confirms New 911 RSR GTE Car for 2017

At least in GTE that appears to be the case, that does not seem to be the case in LMP1, luckily.

i like a Porsche that win in the LMP1.

    but i prefer(for my point of view)  a 911 that win in the GTE class,and i repeat  "a 911", not another Porsche.Smiley

I agree Porsche's core is sports car racing, not prototype racing but I guess in WEC the proto's grab the headlines. We'll have to wait until 2017 for sports cars I guess.

Re: Porsche Confirms New 911 RSR GTE Car for 2017

Whilst I understand the desire to see the 911 successful, it is important to understand that "prototypes" are "sportscars too."Think of the 906, 908, 910, 917, 936, 956,962 etc, etc. The 911 is in the GT (E) class within the sportscar realm. Porsche has had a tremendous success in both classes. It would be a real shame not to continue their successful  racing heritage.

Yes, engine moved forward and position of gearbox changed too. This will allow huge rear diffuser such as used by the competition.

Re: Porsche Confirms New 911 RSR GTE Car for 2017

Is this going to be based on the rumored 960 or will it still be a "911"?

Re: Porsche Confirms New 911 RSR GTE Car for 2017

    It is still a 911.

So this is essential rear mid-engine now, yeah? Guess the 911 era is over ;)

If engine is moved forward gearbox position would have to change, because they are rigidly attached to each other.

Sorry Fritz. Porsche have not supplied any details yet. I'm going by rumors and also what has been written/reported regarding the waivers that the ACO/FiA have issued in order to allow for this car to race in the GTE class.

Re: Porsche Confirms New 911 RSR GTE Car for 2017

Here it is from another angle:

Re: Porsche Confirms New 911 RSR GTE Car for 2017

Well, after the Le Mans experience in GTE, they know what they are up against in terms of the competition (Ford GT, Ferrari 488) and BoP for 2017.

The big question remains if the tweaks to the basic 911 layout, primarily the presumed mid-rear engine configuration plus presumed the engine gearbox position switch plus the rear diffuser etc., will be sufficient to become competitive again.

The choice of engine, turbo versus NA, will obviously also play a major role.

I just hope Walliser's tears at the pre-race press briefing after qualifying were related only to the hopeless effort of the 2016 RSR and not also to his sudden realization that they may not have done enough conceptually for 2017...

Re: Porsche Confirms New 911 RSR GTE Car for 2017

Yes, as you know I'm not 100% convinced by this option. I sincerely hope I'm wrong, but.....

Re: Porsche Confirms New 911 RSR GTE Car for 2017

The 2016 car was basically place holder. Nothing more. They didn't have any delusions about it's performance against the competition. They had been focused on the 2017 car from the beginning.

Re: Porsche Confirms New 911 RSR GTE Car for 2017

True, but I don't think they expected the 2016 RSR to be a whopping 4 sec off the pace in Le Mans. So the question remains, have they done enough conceptually to make the 2017 RSR at least 4 sec a lap quicker, using LM as a benchmark.

Re: Porsche Confirms New 911 RSR GTE Car for 2017

2016 was going to be a Ford year in Le Mans anyway, everyone knew that from a century ago, figuratively speaking.

The '16 car is basically the '15 car. Motorsport's priority went to the '17 RSR and '16 GT3R.

The '16 GT3R car is important because of the engine, the basic form will be the base for the .2GT3 which is coming next March. They knew they had to sort that one out quickly.

And they gain almost a year of development for the '17 car by abandoning the 2016 season so to speak.

It should be mega from what I heard from Andy and Frank.

And no, I got nothing about turbo-ed or not.

Re: Porsche Confirms New 911 RSR GTE Car for 2017

I agree Whoopsy: 2016 was a write-off from the start.

My concerns with this mid-engine 911 solution are as follows:

    1. If it is clear that the current regulations favor a mid engine design  (mainly due to aero possibilities) why not use a platform that is specifically designed for a mid-engine rather than re-engineer one that is not designed for that purpose.
    2. One of the major tools used for BoP are air restrictors. These limit hp. They do a very poor job of  limiting  torque. We consistently see that the competition with their bigger engines often have a substantial advantage (especially in straight line speed). I'm sure Porsche will address this with a Turbo engine , but will it be enough?
