    Re: OFFICIAL: New Panamera (2016)

    Upsa:

Great...thanks! I haven't seen any in Dubai yet, I suppose we'll start spotting them in November or thereabouts. The big craze here these days is the Bentayga (which I don't much care for, to be honest, but whatever the Royal family patronizes is in vogue - they've apparently ordered 50 Bentaygas). So much for the G Wagen which has been the vehicle of choice

Hated the Bentayga in photos; saw it live on our dealer floor here in Kuwait and although it looks better, it's still quite vulgar and heavy-handed. The Middle East'll eat it up though.

Also - "ruling family." Try all they want and call themselves whatever they like but they ain't royalty. Smiley

I was last week at the Bentley dealer. My wife loves loves loves it. I think it is just ugly. The interior is beautiful, no doubt! But - the dealer told me about 18 months delivery time. So it seems Bentley did something right Smiley

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Panamera (2016)

The car is a bit bulky, but so are Bentleys overall.  For buyers who want to spend upwards of $250,000  for luxury, power and presence, it's a nice choice.  Much more usable, and just as luxurious, as the Maybach.

In the States, it does look that big.  A Range Rover looks diminutive next to a Cadillac Escalade or Ford Raptor.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Panamera (2016)

Saw a white Bentayga at my Audi/Lambo dealer and actually liked how it looked in this color.

However, I consider this car's design to be tasteless, it just reminds me of Porsche's first Cayenne (955).

For the targeted market(s), this car is certainly OK (it makes a point...) but I would never get one, no matter what, even if I had tens of millions. Just not my thing...reminds me too much of a good cigar and a nice Scotch and a nice brown leather sofa but I neither smoke nor drink alcohol and I prefer modern furniture, if you get my point.

To be honest, I am a bit disappointed with the Bentayga because I really like how the Continental Coupe looks.

I read somewhere that the new model Continental design is expected to be spectacular. Not sure when it will be released though

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Panamera (2016)

I hope not "spectacular" the Bentayga way.

Panamera Turbo S out testing? Seems likely if the Turbo S is rumoured to get the hybrid tech. This mule got the Turbo exhaust pipes at least...

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Panamera (2016)

Looks great in this spec. New Sport Design package, Volcano grey paint, tinted rear lights etc. And those PCCB brakes are massive!

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Panamera (2016)

The headlights are to big for my taste while the back looks like an Audi. I belive real life this car must look classy and better than on pics but the first generation had more character, it was more unique.

The current look of the Panamera is how the Panamera should have looked from the start. I agree, it is a bit too much perfection but I think that whoever has money and wants a nice luxury sedan will choose the new Panamera over the S class or 7 series.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Panamera (2016)

IMHO Porsche made a huge mistake trying to fight against the high end luxury sedans. The best they could had done was fit a shorter wheelbase, which makes more sense.

From an aesthetic point of view the Panamera is, by far, the ugliest car of the segment. Lacks of class and proportions and, to me, it looks like a cheap chinese design overall.

Performance wise it could be the best in its class but who the hell is looking for excitement at the wheel in a car like this? Normally all you want is a very comfortable ride and power enough to cruising relaxed. Honestly I don't see any potential customer of S Class - 7 Series - A8 - XJ - Mulsanne - Phantom switching to this one.

Seriously? I was always thinking the same about the BMW 7 series or even the S class, I could never stand the Jags. Bentley Continental maybe, the Mulsanne is a bit too classic for me but I love the Ghost, the Phantom not so much. In my opinion, the new Panamera is the most beautiful sedan in it's class but I still wouldn't buy it because I am done with sedans (a personal decision, nothing against the Panamera).

So many potential customers worldwide, not all sedan drivers want comfort only, they also want sportiness.

I guess it is a matter of personal needs, preference and maybe even taste.

Comfort? Well, for comfort, I would get the Ghost. My favorite. The Panamera combines everything...luxury...sportiness and...comfort. Perfect for sedan lovers.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Panamera (2016)

I think it depends on what the buyer is looking for, what they want out of the car, what image they want to project. Based purely on appearance,

    • S Class - 7 Series - A8 - XJ -- staid, conservative transportation
    • Mulsanne - Phantom - Ghost -- a completely different level of "conservative" car, opulent but very tastefully so
    • Panamera -- sportier than the others, but maybe trying too hard in the front to look that way

But, I think the biggest problem with the Panamera is that it looks so generic in the rear, like an Audi A7. The "hump" at least gave it some character, and, although I haven't seen the new ones in person (only pics) it looks like they tarted up the front a bit while making the rear more bland. On the other hand, how many "sporty" looking sedans are there out there that it is competing against? So maybe it's found a good niche.

When the Panamera was first announced many others thought the same way as you. I remember we were particularly sceptical here on Rennteam that the markets would absorb Porsche's declared target of 20,000 units per year of this model. We were wrong. You can't argue with success in a situation like this.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Panamera (2016)

@RC The driver who is looking for excitement behind the wheel doesn't drive a car like this. I don't see any S Class or Ghost driver pushing hard in a secondary road, making the tires scream and so. All they want is, as I said, comfort and power, but power for a different purpouse than be the fastest in opening gas at the exit of the corner. At least this is how I understand this segment.

@fritz Maybe the numbers (wheelbase, length) say that I'm wrong but I have the impression that the first Panamera fought against executive cars, this is: 5 series, E class, A6... If so, then Porsche did it right to my eyes with the first version and my theory that they are screwing it up trying to battle the big brothers stands.

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Panamera (2016)

The Panamera was always competing at a higher level than the 5 series or the E Class. They were supposedly devloping the Pajun (Panamera Junior - not the real name) to compete with the BMW 5 series or MB E Class, but it sounds like the project is on a indefinite hold...

The 928 was so beautiful, years ahead of its time. I bet if they came up with a modern rendition of the same shape it would be a massive success!

I'm not a fan of the looks of the original 928, but that top rendering of a " modern"  concept is stunning. I suppose the question I ask myself is:  Would Porsche really produce something that good looking?

    Re: OFFICIAL: New Panamera (2016)

They would have better off skipping the C-pillar completely. It just looks awkward, very different than the original 928
