New Boxster review by Grassroots Motorsports

I don't know if any of you get/read Grassroots Motorsports but there is a great article on the new Boxster called "The Perfect Sports Car?"

Here are some quotes that I really liked:

"the six-speed unit in the S is the best transmission we have ever shifted, even besting the first-generation Miata box, the one so many automotive writers mention as the benchmark for great shifting cars"

"Few cars are as confident and rewarding at speed as Prosche's redesinged entry-level gem. Top up or down, the new Boxster is one fo the best sports cars we've ever driven, at any price"

"Only once in the 20-year history of this publication have we seen an automotive manufacturer hit it so right - and that was the new Mazda called the MX-5, or Miata. The Boxster was already a great car, but now it's better."

Overall a very good article...and a very good issue of Grassroots Motorsports. Lots of good stuff.

    Cheers!

Thanks, this is great! Any chances to scan so we can see the photos if any?

Re: New Boxster review by Grassroots Motorsports

I'll try and do that tonight....There are some good pictures and some of the first 986/987 comparison pics that i've seen.

Re: New Boxster review by Grassroots Motorsports

    great thanks

Re: New Boxster review by Grassroots Motorsports

I wonder if they've ever tried the shifter in an S2000?

Re: New Boxster review by Grassroots Motorsports

The most recent Road & Track says that the S2000 is simply the best gearbox on the planet. Out of a possible 20 points, the S2000 received 20. The 911S got a 19.6 and the Boxster S got a 19.4. Pretty darn close to the S2000.

I just realized that I never scanned the article in. I'll see what I can do.

I owned an S2000. It was like owning a 4 wheeled motorbike. No storage room inside at all, manic engine that was the car's best and worst feature. Great gearbox. Gimmicky dash. Plastic rear window in the soft top (glass in the later ones) that was opaque within 3 months. Soft top cover was almost impossible to fit. Dismal fuel range. But, unless you drove it like your butt was on fire it just didn't feel special. Which is where the Boxster excels. Feels and sounds special at ANY speed. Drove one again last summer before I committed to a new Boxster which just convinced me the 987 was the way to go. BUT the best after sales service I have ever experienced. If Porsche Centre Bournemouth is as good (impressions so far are very good) then I will be content.

Yeah, I test drove a couple recently... That shifter is slick!! I think it's a really fun car for the $. I'm in an Elise now (well, I'm actually at my desk ), and looking for a slightly more realistic daily driver but without losing too much entertainment value. The S2K was the obvious choice, one (big) step towards normality from the Elise: slightly go-karty feel and similar power delivery too. I was pretty much set to get one in fact, but decided to check out the Boxster "just to see what spending an extra $10k would get me..." Felt a little slow after the Lotus so tried the Boxster S. Just right!

Yes, the Elise 111R is a fabulous piece of kit. Have to thank you Americans for that as the Toyota engine was installed to meet your emission regs. I've driven the Exige as well - even more amazing. Too "hard core" for me, OK for a weekend blast but wouldn't want to go touring in one. My wife would certainly have divorced me. I've tried just about everything to try and convince myself that the Boxster S is too much money but nothing else I've tried even comes close. So a Boxster S it is, I am due to collect mine 4 weeks today.

I'm actually English, just moved here 5 months back... but I know some Americans and I will thank them on your behalf.
