Proper winter ! The labs are like at home. No pants needed for them indecision

I was wondering about taking away the food of those Lions ? Dost it  not take them lots of energy and days of chasing to get a pray ? Would it not be best to leave it to them ?

I'd be more worried it would piss them off to steal their food. angry

    Frank,

Dusk and later, before dawn and night is their hunting time.  Last week I misjudged turning time and came down a dark canyon in the dusk and murk.  Everything looks different which makes seeing the track difficult and you risk getting lost - Sun Ra becomes critical as lead bitch, to keep you on the track.

As dusk fell, I put the labs in patrol formation:  Sun Ra on point [12 o'clock], Sir Cosmic Messenger on my 6 o'clock, and Sueño and Sabre held in verbally, to surround me with million power noses and protect them more than roaming free  They provide a safety buffer for me as the cat gets to them first, truth be said.  I removed my Right glove, so I can shoot more quickly.  I carry a Glock 20 [10mm] in a chest rig with 220 grain hard cast bullets.

It could be unpleasant enough to lose a dog then kill the cat, or even worse if your 6 dog fails to get bitten on the neck and the cat gets you instead:)

Speaking with our vet yesterday who as out 5 days on Search and Rescue looking for that lady that disappeared - we both think she was coming down in the dark, possibly lost the track and the Lion of that canyon got her. She had no dogs and likely no gun - totally exposed.  The search was called off after 2 weeks, some day her skeleton will be found. The cat drags its prey off to eat and hide leftovers, making it hard to find.

This prey was a mule deer and heavily dined upon by the cat before the Crewe found it and finished it.  When there's plenty of prey, the Lions eat the heart, lungs and liver and stash the rest, taking down a deer, elk or Big horn every 4 days or so.

A cat's life has risk, so when they smell the Lab pack they tend to defer attack as too risky [plus it's daytime], but to answer Frank, there is risk in life for the Labs and Daddy.  Wolves steal lion kill all the time which is why they drag it off and bury it.

In February, Seneca twice left the house in the night dark and snow, to go feed on the fresh lion kill 1/2 mile up the canyon!  I searched, had a wake assuming the cat got her..... and she appeared 4 hours later.  Now, that was pure risk.  2 weeks later I found out her cancer had returned so maybe she knew she had nothing to lose.

Scary but such a fortunate experience to live in such a wild and beautiful place.

These dogs are real gems and prove one more time how man and dog live together abd care about each other.

That sounds fantastically wild, what an experience it must be to live there. I'm going to have to visit you at some point. Smiley

What I'd wonder, would it make sense to get one proper defence/attack dog along with the others? Something that would/could scare of any nasty wildlife? Then again, I don't know what domestic dog would be strong/scary enough to fight of this type of wildlife. Smiley

    Come anytime Frank!

Research the Dogo Argentino.  Total war dog against attackers, which might cause a bit to trouble if he kills the delivery man at 8 pm.....  They are aggressive hunting and protection dogs. A woman alone could benefit having one or a cripple [like myself!].  I prefer Labs, now.

Higher, colder, snowy windy..  Thank God for animal navigation, Sun Ra can follow a snowy track she's never been on!

Nice to see the Raptor after  a hard, cold day!  Now we're using Slippery mode, and it handles well in snow - 50-80mph  on 3 inches of snow over dirt heading home - with total control.

    Hi Joe,

It's still rifle hunting season, so orange for vis, and handy reflectors for night.

Can you and other toyota guys discuss experience on the low range settings?  Thanks

Re: SUN'S LAST RUN TO WILSON, WY - 991 C2S CAB LIFE, END OF AN ERA (Part II)

The weather is always better in our home basinblush

    IMG_2725.jpeg

The Raptor did well over 6 miles of low range in 4-7" snow.  It slipped sideways slightly on side hill, but went up and down the steep and very rocky well.

The Landcruiser is in full use by Madame, so as above I seek input on the 5 low range setting' performance under various conditions.

The trucks seem inverted in focus:  The Raptor has 6 High Range modes and only one rock crawl/low range setting,  The Land Cruise has 5 low range and only full time 4wd in High.

Re: SUN'S LAST RUN TO WILSON, WY - 991 C2S CAB LIFE, END OF AN ERA (Part II)

I've never used the crawl settings and rarely use the Lo range. Most of our sand bashing is done in Hi range.

Some friends told me they do use the crawl settings when they are totally stuck in sand. Anyways, the different settings are just different speeds of crawling.

Glad you are utilizing both trucks it to the fullest. Enjoy.

Beautiful! Looks like a bedded silt stone, tilted tectonically?  I worked in Maroc East of Errachiidia we had more red sandstones, desert metal and deep sand.... and lots of under engineered washed out bridges! It was always good to come home to the beach.  What are your summer temps?  We used to leave for for the prospect at 3am work at mapping the geology 4- 11 and it would be 115F by 10.

What type of trees are those?

We have what I believe is the hottest place on earth. Our summers would exceed 50+ celsius but other than that, it's really beautiful weather. Nowadays it's between 25-35 degrees making it perfect for both the sea and land excursions.

Those trees are locally known as Ghaf, it's the national tree of the UAE.

We've got a variety of different terrain from red sand to beautiful mountains, the Arabian gulf and Sea of Oman. Just takes a couple of hours to see it all, but each part is well worth the visit.
