test drove the 987 Boxster S
Today I went to my dealer and took the new Boxster S for the afternoon. I really liked the car. The interior quality is very good, very solid materials. The seats are sporty but at the same time confortable, you won't get tired in long trips. The PCM is very easy to use because everything is intuitive. The multifunctional buttons on the steering wheel are very useful and well positioned, it's a must. The soft top has a good soundproof, may be just few little noises. The BOSE system as usual is the best car sound system I've ever seen. The silver GT is nice but not worth 3000 euro.
Engine. I expected a bit more from the 280 ponies. May be the power delivery is too linear. The sound is very nice. With a full sport exhaust I am pretty sure it will sound like a 360 Modena.
Gearbox. It is very precise and shortshifting in the firts 4 gears. The clutch is pretty light, so it you can't get tired, at the same time it is easy to use if drving sporty. The distance between the pedals is perfect.
Brakes. More than enough. I would say they have the right brake power and the resistance is remarkable. The brake pedal is very soft.
The car had PAMS and Chrono Sport Plus with 19 inch wheels. The stiffness of the suspensions is quite remarkable. It changes the set up in an ideal way. I wasn-t impressed by the response of the throttle in Sport mode. Couldn't really feel the difference. The steering wheel is very comunicative.
The car has some understeer and in few occasions the front slides away. The rear is pretty sticked on the ground. Great grip the the 265 19 inch. Without PSM the slides are pretty great to do . Handling is excellent.
If I had to buy one, I would go for the normal Boxster. The car is more than enough for what is has been conceived to be, a Roadster! To go fast there are much better Porsches.
