I have to admit though that the Yaris GR is a very interesting model, kind of a Japanese Lancia Delta HF Integrale. Smiley

I hear Alfa Romeo cars suffer from numerous electrical issues, does anyone know if that is true? Maybe they have this sorted by now?

Re: Alfa Romeo/Maserati 5 year product plan

The first model year cars suffered teething problems. You have to bear in mind that the Giulia was brought to market in record time with it taking a little over 2 years from memory to go from drawing board to showroom. There have been continuous improvements during production and if you read owners forums the 18 and 19 model year cars are generally pretty reliable. These early faults should have been addressed under warranty by now with some redesigned parts being fitted for certain issues. Most electrical faults in these later cars are the result of battery issues caused by the way the IBS (intelligent battery system) software controls the functions of the car in the event that the battery falls below the required threshold level. If you are only using the car occasionally then it is a good idea to put it on a battery tender but then this also applies to most brands and I've found I have to keep my current Porsches on CTEK chargers or they will go into battery protection mode and then fail to start. The Giulia has just received a mid cycle refresh which mainly focuses on the interior quality, improves the infotainment unit with a touchscreen facilty with various app's that Alfa calls widgets, and ew driver assist tech that takes the car up to Level 2 autonomy. There is a more thorough facelift due at the end of 2020 or early 2021.

The Quadrifoglio is a superb car for the money. I don't know how Alfa have achieved it but the ride quality is fantastic for a car with such performance.

Re: Alfa Romeo/Maserati 5 year product plan

Great info, thanks very much. I will have a look through some forums and give the Quadrifoglio some consideration. wink

Re: Alfa Romeo/Maserati 5 year product plan

Maserati Ghibli Trofeo And Quattroporte Trofeo Get Ferrari V8 Power

Mirroring the Levante Trofeo, the two speedy sedans share a twin-turbo 3.8-liter V8 engine built by Ferrari. Much like it’s the case with Maserati’s SUV, the new additions to the Trofeo lineup pack a meaty 580 horsepower and 538 pound-feet (730 Newton-meters) of torque. Both top out at a respectable 203 mph (326 km/h), making them the fastest sedans to ever carry the Trident logo.

Re: Alfa Romeo/Maserati 5 year product plan

    The Ghibli Trofeo sounds interesting...

Re: Alfa Romeo/Maserati 5 year product plan

Ferrari V8 power! For those who remember Lancia launched a Thema 8.32 (large sized saloon) with a Ferrari V8 in a vain effort to resuscitate the brand.

When Maserati were reborn for the umpteenth time in 2014 they said they would cap production at 75.000 cars in order not dilute the brand

In 2019 they sold just 19.000 cars which is a very poor result and very off target if you think that they have a SUV in their range and a model that rivals medium sized BMWs.

I think that people are not willing to experiment with new or reborn brands anymore. There are the established names in the market in every segment and consumers feel very covered by those.

Lamborghini and McLaren have made an impact in recent years but these are minority brands and the road is very long for them for long term survival.

If there is a "Ferrari" logo on the engines, these cars will surely be more successful than before. Unfortunately I couldn't find any engine pics, so maybe the final decision hasn't been made yet?

Re: Alfa Romeo/Maserati 5 year product plan

Ferrari have been building the F136 series of V8 engines for Maserati ever since 2001. None have featured Ferrari branding to the best of my knowledge. I doubt very much that is something that will change with these Trofeo models.

This is what I was afraid of... The simple Ferrari branding on the engines would have drawn in more customers, not sure they are aware of this? Smiley

Re: Alfa Romeo/Maserati 5 year product plan

I don't think you understand the dynamics between these two companies. There is a lot of rivalry between them and Modena would never willingly give Ferrari prominent branding on it's cars. Whilst it may attract a certain type of new customer it would certainly alienate their traditional core customers.

No, I don't...obviously. I always thought that Maserati is the little brother (or sister? Smiley) of Ferrari but apparently I was wrong. What a shame.

Re: Alfa Romeo/Maserati 5 year product plan

The Giulia is a great looking car, some fresh air in a sea of 5 series and E classes. Some Italian flair styling.

The interior needed some work, so is the reliability, or at least the reputation part.

Re: Alfa Romeo/Maserati 5 year product plan

I agree, this extreme version is of course a bit over the top but the Giulia itself is a great great looking sedan, very refreshing among the regular more conservative sedans out there.

Don't quite trust Alfa Romeo reliability yet but that problem is minimized if you simply lease the car with an extended warranty included.

The risk of that is that you could be paying for the car while it sit in the shop waiting for repairs.

I knew someone had his car sitting in the workshop for 3 months cause the Italians can't be bother to ship parts over.

The problem with Maserati, imo, is the retro styling. I think there is a limited market for that. I still long for styling that would be at the cutting edge, like the Khamsin and Bora were in their day, or the Quattroporte of the late 70's and 80's.

Wait, perhaps if they stick with retro styling for another couple of decades, they will start copying the 70s and 80s instead of the 50s and 60s Smiley
