Press Release: “Porsche is manufacturing sports cars again...”  CC728175-19EB-4A81-8294-9590C8A82363.gif

    Production, 2020, Porsche AG

    (29 April 2020)

As from next Monday (4 May 2020), Porsche is restarting production on a site- and task-specific basis. All the required measures have been taken in advance to guarantee the maximum possible safety for employees and so that production can be increased in stages up to full capacity.

As production is ramped up at the main factory in Zuffenhausen and at the site in Leipzig, all employees will now resume work step by step. The adapted processes in production, logistics and procurement have been agreed with the Works Council and the Health Management department. The requirements of the respective authorities will also be observed.

“The restart is an important signal – for our employees as well as for our customers. We have monitored and analysed the situation very carefully right from the start and flexibly adapted processes. Now is the right time to look forward with optimism and to resume work – subject to special precautions,” says Albrecht Reimold, Member of the Executive Board for Production and Logistics at Porsche AG.

A comprehensive catalogue of measures has been decided for the Porsche factories in Zuffenhausen and Leipzig. In addition to giving paramount importance to ensuring protection for employees, these measures are designed to permit the resumption of orderly and efficient production as quickly as possible. For example, production employees are required to observe a minimum distance of 1.50 metres, follow basic rules of conduct or to work with a face mask in defined areas.

Medical institutions and medical personnel have absolute priority for Porsche when it comes to equipment with protective clothing. The company is therefore organising equipment as part of the “Porsche helps” initiative and is also donating money to hospitals as well as food to food banks; the budget for donations has been increased by five million euros.

“It will take a great deal of effort to get the economic and social system moving again. Everyone must make a contribution to this,” says Oliver Blume, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. “It is important to have a positive fundamental attitude. Every crisis also offers opportunities. And we want to make the most of them.” The company initially stopped production in its two factories on 21 March 2020 for a period of two weeks and announced that it would continuously reassess the situation. Due to bottlenecks in global supply chains, the factories have remained closed for a total of six weeks because orderly production was not possible.

In addition to suspending production, Porsche also decided at the time to implement a number of other stricter measures. These will remain in force until further notice to relieve the burden on the infrastructure at the sites: this means that the greatly increased level of “mobile working” will continue in the indirect areas, and meetings will be held as video or telephone conferences. The ban on business travel also continues to apply.

Modern car factories like Porsches' aren't too populated with humans, stations are set quite far apart and each station has maybe 2 workers who mostly work on different side of the car, not too hard to keep workers 'separated'.

Together with facial mask, that's a pretty good preventive arrangement already.

Station timing can also be adjusted upwards to allow for extra timing between stations, mostly a moot point as Porsche's workers are quite skilled so they don't even use up the normal allotted time in the first place.

    Wonderbar:

Came across these 1973 pics when a buddy and I (on left) were racing off road in Baja, Mexico.  We were junior members of a team with Parnelli Jones, Bill Stroppe and Walker Evans. And we are still alive!  BTW, the Ford truck was mostly fiberglass and had over 550hp.  It was great off road, but hell on pavement.

There really isn't anything new. Put the regular targa top on a 992 body

One thing I noticed though, the rear 'hump', like the part above the engine, is even higher on the 992 than the 991 in Targa form. Fuller. More bulbous. Or just fat now.

see the shape of the glass, it is not flat chassis like it used to be on very first generation. 991 was already fat but still ''matching'' that spirit.

the rear now is so bulbous that the shape of the chassis even accentuate that.

992 is definitely the fat child.

Here is some interesting things about the video, the background plate is shot in Vancouver, and driving on the wrong side no less.

    First sequence:

    Screenshot 2020-05-18 21.43.55.png
    Screenshot 2020-05-18 21.44.20.png

That's the back alley to the local Trump Hotel. Believe it or not, the main entrance of the Trump Hotel IS in the back alley.

    2nd shot:

    Screenshot 2020-05-18 21.59.05.png
    Screenshot 2020-05-18 21.58.28.png

Despite wha the video might convey, these 2 are not a continuous shots. When the car come out of the alley, that's a one way road, the car actually turn left facing the wrong way travelling half a small block to the beginning of the 2nd shot, right turn onto another one way street the wrong way.

    3rd shot:

    Screenshot 2020-05-18 21.40.23.png
    Screenshot 2020-05-18 21.40.44.png

Another wrong way drive across the bridge heading towards Downtown. The tall iconic building in the background is a new apartment complex designed by Bjarke Ingels, of the Lego House fame. The building start off with a triangle base and finished with a square top. Seeing that on the video is what tipped me it's filmed in Vancouver.

Porsche 992 Looks Perfect With A Ducktail Spoiler...  E0F26BDD-E91B-4EF4-964B-7C4204B9E420.gif

    (3 July 2020)

Porsche has been spied testing an intriguing 911 prototype at the Nürburgring and it could very well be a successor to the lovely 997-generation 911 Sport Classic.

The first thing that stands out with this 911 is the ducktail rear spoiler that looks virtually identical to the spoiler of the Sport Classic. Not only does the wing pay tribute to 911s of decades gone by, but also happens to suit the looks of the sports car absolutely perfectly.

Making the prototype all the more intriguing is the fact that it features air intakes on the rear wheel arches, just like the 911 Turbo and Turbo Smodels. This means the car will likely feature the same 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged six-cylinder of the Turbo S as opposed to being marketed as a mid-tier 911 variant with the 3.0-liter twin-turbo of lesser 911 models.

If that’s the case, it could pump out the same 641 hp and 590 lb-ft (800 Nm) of torque, resulting in a 0-60 mph (96 km/h) time of roughly 2.6 seconds. Interestingly, the car appears to have a manual transmission, something that neither the current 911 Turbo or Turbo S do.

The biggest giveaway of the presence of a stick shift comes at the 42-second mark of the video below, when an aggressive gear shift is made and the driver then raises his right hand off the shifter and onto the steering wheel. Throughout the rest of the clip, the changes also sound too slow to be from a PDK transmission.

Kevin Estre: “Why ‘Ring records are scarier than quali laps...”

Why ‘Ring records are scarier than quali laps

Kevin Estre set the GT3 RS Nurburgring lap time. Here’s why it was a bigger challenge than qualifying for the N24

Porsche works driver Kevin Estre is used to extracting the maximum from Porsche 911 racecars on the Nürburgring Nordschleife – his ballsy fightback to second place at the end of last year’s Nürburgring 24 Hours is testament to that, even if a post-race disqualification on an engine technicality ultimately left him empty-handed.

The reigning WEC LM GTE Pro champion scythed through the field, gave no quarter and made Porsche motorsport boss Pascal Zurlinden look like he was watching a horror film as we looked on from the pit garage – as you’ll see on the Porsche Endurance documentary on Amazon, which is well worth a watch.

Kevin Estre smashed the 991.1 GT3 RS’s ‘Ring lap time by 24sec

So you might imagine that setting a production-car lap record on the Nordschleife would be a walk in the park for the 31-year-old Frenchman, who worked his way up from karting to Carrera Cup and Supercup championships, left for McLaren before returning to Porsche in 2016.

He’d get a good night’s kip, there’d be no traffic, he’d wait for ideal conditions, then just set off at his leisure and bag the time. Indeed, Estre set a stunning 6min 56.4sec lap in the outgoing 911 GT3 RS (the 991.2), extracting so much performance from the car that he even blew past the 918 Spyder hybrid hypercar’s 6min 57sec time (though, yes, the GT3 RS was on the optional Cup 2 R tyres, not original equipment Cup 2s)

Yet Estre reveals that he finds setting production-lap records more intimidating than going for a qualifying lap in a full-house GT3 R racecar at the ’Ring because there’s less grip and aero, so the car moves around more.

Estre and (left, back) Porsche GT boss Andreas Preuninger

‘I enjoy [the road car records] a lot, but the first laps are always a bit scary,’ admits the apparently fearless Estre. ‘I have some kind of expectation from the GT3 R with great aero, slick tyres, it’s quite a step [to the road car]. The [road] car is amazing, look at the lap time to the racecar, it’s not that far, the speed you can carry, the aero is amazing, and it’s a lot of pleasure, but I need some time to adapt. It’s a lot of adrenaline to go for the record on Nordschleife, harder than doing a quali lap in VLN. The record laps are very rare, I’m not used to this, it’s another challenge, but the cars are getting very close to race car with street legal tyres and weight.’

Development driver Lars Kern (left) also lapped. Just tenths off Estre

Check out the onboard video below to witness Estre’s nail-biting lap in the GT3 RS first hand. It’s all so full-on that it’s hard to pick a favourite moment, but the long, fast, flat-out climb out of Bergwerk to Mutkurve where we see Estre nudge 9000rpm in fifth is up there. And for us mere mortals watching in awe, it’s quite reassuring to know the man behind the wheel was thinking ‘bloody hell, this is a bit scary’ when he first tightened up the harnesses.

With the next 911 GT3 RS in the works, let’s hope we’ll see Estre back behind the wheel for another nail-biting lap.

While I like how this masks looks, I hate it when masks become fashion accessories. Masks should be ugly and weird looking, like surgical masks or higher protection class masks. They need to remind people that there is something "going on". I'm not surprised that people don't treat these cloth masks right, today I had a guy who hasn't washed his for a month(!), he just hangs it out the window in the morning for an hour. Smiley Smiley Yummy.

Re: Welcome to Rennteam: Cars and Coffee... (photos)

I heard that cloth masks are not that effective after about 10 washes. Is that true?

Re: Welcome to Rennteam: Cars and Coffee... (photos)

You can wash (and should) wash a cloth mask every day at 60 deg C and exchange it with a new one once a month or so, so washing them 10x doesn’t really affect effectiveness...because there is none. The principle is that if everyone is wearing a mask, there is an additional “layer” of protection, latest studies indicate around 10%. This doesn’t sound much but it is a lot if you do the math. Social distancing is still 90% of the equation and unfortunately many people are too dumb to understand that, resulting in ignoring social distancing when they are wearing a mask.

Protection is only provided by certified(!) medical(!) N95 or N100 masks (FFP2 or FFP3 in other countries).

I do not blame people for not knowing much about masks, simply because governments and the media didn’t really care much about this topic, other than telling them to wear a mask...or not.

Over the past months, I have become an expert in masks, I helped to take over a dozen fake N95 masks off the market in Germany and I am now even an official local contact for medical professionals who need mask information. You would be surprised to learn that I’d say that 95%(!) of doctors (number is much lower for hospital staff) don’t have a clue about masks, so be careful who you trust. Also a lot of crap on the internet, incl. some false interpretations of current mask studies.
