McLaren 650S Spider: 5 Years as my Daily Driver

Just posted a new karenable.com article on using a 650S Spider as my daily driver for the past 5 years:

That’s how I would use it. Keep it and drive it. Love it!

There is one particular line that strikes a cord with me in your excellent write up:

"It’s been completely reliable and problem free.  When you are lucky enough to get a car like that, you hold on to it."

I dont consider myself a superstition person in any other aspect of my life. But I have learnt form a couple of decades of new performance car experience that this statement has validity. Ive owned cars that due to reasons unknown or just bad luck have been periodic headaches (from mechanical issues to simple cosmetic blemishes from parking and useage).

What I have learned is consisitent withh the above statement. If you still enjoy it, its reliable and has been a "good luck" car then keep it - dont sell it. Usually Karma pays you back if you sell it by making sure the car you replace it with makes your life far more stressful!

Totally agree - my first 991 was troubled. The second has been excellent (aside from the intrusion of the rat still leaving an odour of dog biscuits even after the new exhaust heat shield has been installed last week).

Thanks for the posting SSO - another chord for me was highlighting the Internet focus on negatives - people often forget that many trouble free experiences simply sail along without ever being bought to the attention of the WWW.

    That is so true.

My last Panamera turbo had destroyed all reputation to the brand. 11 times we had to tow away the car. Once the car was for 11 days in Italy broken in Milano and Porsche Italy could resolve the problem. Two times they had taken the engine out and checked everything. Once I got the car back and 2 kilometers later the car has to towed away. After that, I never used the Panamera when driving to important meetings or to airports.

After that I bought an Audi S8+ and not one single problem - I liked the S8 so much for being a reliable friend.

I have also to mention that I never had serious problems with my 650S spider, my 720s coupé, and now with my 720s spider. I did have more trouble with all my Porsche cars before.

What has been known as a "Friday car" is a possibility whatever the brand of vehicle. But IMO this must not affect future decisions or be deemed as typical of any given make of car.

The worst car I had for faults in and out of warranty was a Mercedes ML320. Does this mean Mercedes are badly made? My taxi driver friend has had a series of E class diesel and swears by the brand.

I've had 3 Porsche cars of the modern era without problems, so much that the extended warranties proved a total waste of money.

I've also had very good experiences with BMWs although many consider them as unreliable.

It;s all a matter of bad luck. Machinery can fail and you only hear of failures from owners. The happy thousands or millions won't come on the internet to praise their car.

Which is why it's useful to have a balanced appraisal from the likes of SSO. I was done with Porsche after the hassle of my 991 - but they did manage to tug me back (albeit with the threat of the Motor Ombudsmen action) and the 2nd has been a joy.
