Grant:
What is the latest on the next Porsche Hypercar (918 successor)? Those are due every 10 years, right? So , due in around 3 years?
The plan was to be a all electric car. But with the turmoil within, date could slip.
918 is really the pinnacle of hybrid cars, not sure even Porsche can top themselves there. Maybe perhaps doing a turbo 4 with hybrid, a la 919.
Unless there is wholesale changes in car regulations, they won't be doing another conventional engine one anymore, pointless. Their hypercars are not just a halo car, it's a blueprint for their direction going forward, for testing new technologies. 911s have yet to be hybridize, and the 992 was designed from the grounds up to be able to support the hybrid system.
The 918 successor should be a 800V EV, but that's about all I can think of at the moment, as the Taycan is already pretty full featured, and no other EV is even remotely close to the Taycan on braking regen capture rate. I am guessing it's all hinging on LG delivering next generation of the 800V battery technology, but LG dropped the ball on the initial launch, and the virus isn't helping them catch up to market demand.
The Porsche 800V system already have the best charge and discharge rate of all EVs right now thanks to the 800V system, the only way to top that is to deliver higher density of energy storage, but that's completely on LG's plate.
They were suppose to run Formula E this year to further their research, but because of the virus that's on hold and it really does affect the street car side of the development.
I would not be surprised if the project gets delayed till 2022 or so for the concept to be shown at car show, say Geneva.
