    Porsche 997 & 997S Sales

PCNA reported November 2004 "sales" of the 997 as 282, and 261 for the 997S. For the year 2004 through November, sales of the 997 are 779, and the 997S are 959.

Seems that the balance between 997 and 997S is slightly shifting, perhaps due to availability.

    Re: Porsche 997 & 997S Sales

can't figure this out: are 911 sales slowing up or getting better?

Too many variables to make an informed judgment. However, I believe when the 996 were selling well, they were averaging over 1000 cars a month. The above numbers reflect at least three months of sales (1500 cars) of a new model which one would think would generate greater interest. The signs are not good especially when most car magazines have had nothing but excellent reviews on the 997.

They should work on improving the quality of the Cayenne and develop a modern sport car and get away from the marketing stradegy of "you can fool some of the people all the time and those are the ones we must concentrate on"

One must also consider however that the 996 was launched at the height of the Internet/stock market bubble. These economic times are very different.

    Re: Porsche 997 & 997S Sales

Plus, maybe the factory is still ramping up with the new model. And those figures don't count the 996 based cars still being sold.

    Re: Porsche 997 & 997S Sales

One other thing to consider.....you can no longer order a 996 cab and the 997 cabs won't show up until April of 2005. Many folks will pass on the remaining 2004/2005 cabs waiting for the 997. So, you have a car that accounts for a large percentage of the total sold that is not available. The true test for the 997 will be when both cabs and coupes are available. If the numbers are soft then, Porsche may have a problem.

    Re: Porsche 997 & 997S Sales

I think the 997 sells is picking up. I talked to one of the two dealers today to see if I could set up a test drive with a 997S and the same guy that told me they still had the launch car in the show room, said all the "S" ones are sold out till May '05 .
I guess no test drive for me he did say that they have several 997 Carreras in the lot but no "S".

I guess the sells are picking up, at least in Houston I can say it's true.

    Re: Porsche 997 & 997S Sales

Hey Ron, they have a couple of S's at Momentum. You could probably test drive one.

    Re: Porsche 997 & 997S Sales

My local dealer in Newport Beach, CA said that if you were to walk in from the street and order a cab from them today you probably would have to wait about a year until you would receive it. If you ordered a coupe you could probably get it by April/May. This is a dealership that is one of the top 5 selling dealers in the USA.

    Re: Porsche 997 & 997S Sales

Thanks Texas911, I'll give it shot tomorrow I'm going that direction .

    Re: Porsche 997 & 997S Sales

    No prob.

As for the Cab. Well the wait is longer because they haven't started delivering them yet.

    Re: Porsche 997 & 997S Sales

Ron - test drove Momentum's silver grey C2S two weeks ago...the car does have advantages over the 996...but can't say it that i jumped out and said "WOW"

An advance over the 996 to be sure...but not compelling.

    Porsche 997 & 997S Sales - Finally

First off I should thank the guys at Momentum Porsche Larry and Rodger for being as accommodating and friendly as always in particular Rodger Gay who took me for a ride and let me drive the car and experiment the new 997S for myself .

Well, finally I was able to get a chance and take a ride in the new Porsche creation the 997S , there are many articles posted in our rennteam site and my impressions in details would be redundant but I'm going to briefly list my likes and not so likes about this beauty the 997S.

    Exterior likes:
1)Looks refined and more rounded than the 996.
2)19" wheels look very nice indeed.
    3)Door handles.
4)Engine sound is very good (non XLF)
    5)The overall package looks good.
    Interior likes:
    1)%110 improvement over the 996.
2)The dash to me looks more like the 993 which I like.
3)The steering wheel looks and feels very good.
    Exterior not so likes:
    1)Front lights too big IMO.
2)Fog lights don't blend very well either.
    3)Fake dual exhaust tips.
    Interior not so likes:
1)This is personal of course, but too many buttons in the center console.
2)Mind you I'm 6'2" (189 cm) tall, the driver seat sits closer to the steering wheel than my 996 even though I pushed it all the way back but my knees were still bent to a not very comfortable position. I sit very comfortably in my 996.

    And now my driving impressions:

I instantly felt the normal and sport suspension settings as soon as the PASM button was pushed . In Normal position the car is very comfortable and once in the Sports mode it felt more rigid than my 996 with M030 option; the switching mode is very instantaneous and no delay at all. The steering is very nice, on the contrary of some people criticizing it, it feels more direct and no vibrations or shakes what so ever . The Power was very good; I'd say as good as the 996 until you hit 4000/5000 rpm the power kicks in like nobody's business , very fast and instant power delivery with no lags at all. To me the car is very planted and stable, sticks to the ground without making the driver concerned about not being able to control the car (I liked it a lot) .

One thing that was kind of a surprise to me was the feeling of the clutch, I'm sure it is a matter of getting used to it but getting from my 996 into the 997S I felt the clutch was very soft ; literally not requiring any force to push the pedal at all. As I said this a personal preference and doesn't mean that there is anything wrong with it; but I kind of like the feeling of my 996 which requires a firm push of the clutch to engage gears . Handling and breaks were very satisfying too should I even go there? We all know these two factors are Porsche's strongest traits .

All in all, the car is a fantastic piece of engineering but as BMCG said and to me as well, it didn't give me the feeling of "I must have one" at this time . I'm happy that I test drove it but for the time being my 996 will do the job.

Again thanks to Texas911 for pointing out the availability of the 997S at momentum Porsche and special thanks to Rodger Gay for giving me his valuable time. By the way, they're sold out (997S) till June '05 so if you want one contact them and see if anyone cancels their order, you may be in luck.

    Re: Porsche 997 & 997S Sales - Finally

Not compelling for you current owners, but for us first timers, very very compelling!

    Re: Porsche 997 & 997S Sales - Finally

Very nice write up dude, thanks a lot!
So mixed feelings huh? Well, guess I'm gonna have to test drive that baby myself sooner or later.
Weird your comment about the clutch though! Shame... As me too, I like a firm clutch.
Oh and Ron, don't fool yourself my friend, no way you're 6'2!!! You're barely taller than a hobbit!

    Re: Porsche 997 & 997S Sales - Finally

Thanks for the write-up. Can't determine if that is a Seal Gray, or a GT Silver color?

    Re: Porsche 997 & 997S Sales - Finally

    Seal Gray it is.

    Re: Porsche 997 & 997S Sales - Finally

Ron - had they sold the Atlas Grey car?

    Re: Porsche 997 & 997S Sales - Finally

I believe they had since the only 997S was the Seal gray I test drove.
