OK, I try to be honest with you: if you own a 03 Boxster, it doesn't make much sense to upgrade now immediately.
Unless you want to move from a 03 Boxster 2.7 to a 05 Boxster S.
It is thrown out money because even the 03 Boxster is a very good and refined car. If you would own a Boxster from the first generation with the 204 HP or 252 HP engines, I would definetely recommend an "upgrade" to the new Boxster. This would be a different story.
The new Boxster S shows impressive performance: a german car magazine recently tested it a 19.9 seconds from 0-125 mph. This is better than the 993 C2 and at par with early 996 Cabs. Impressive. And finally: Boxster S drivers can outrun the Cayenne Turbo.
I know this sounds dumb but I have a friend who owns a Boxster S (260 HP) and he was pretty frustrated when he wasn't able to follow me in my Cayenne Turbo (of course I'm talking about straight line performance only!).
Also the BMW M3 Cab has been tested by various car magazines at around 19-20 seconds from 0-125 mph, so the new Boxster S finally plays in a different league now.
I heard that IF a Turbo engine is coming, it comes for the Boxster Coupe (or whatever it will be called
) only at the beginning to promote it. And a little birdie told me that the next Boxster facelift brings the power of the Boxster S to "around 300 HP", which might be 295 or 300 or even 305 HP. And there is still room for a Boxster Turbo with 320 HP or slightly more after a 997 facelift.
And of course, like KF said, there is room for a high power version of the Boxster to be able to compete with the SLK.
This is actually where I condemn Porsche's strategy regarding power figures.
I try to explain: if Porsche would have forgotten about a 997 Carrera with 325 HP, there would have been room for a high power version of a Boxster with let's say 340 HP.
The 997 Carrera should have had 355 HP from the start and the Carrera S 380 HP. This would have been the PERFECT combo in my opinion, making room for stronger Boxsters too and allowing 997 customers to feel a real power increase.
325 HP on the 997 Carrera are more than ridiculous and it seems customers "punish" Porsche for that by buying mainly the Carrera S.
Porsche can't ignore the car markets completely. The SLK 55 AMG is a serious "threat" with it's 997 Carrera like straight line performance. And if BMW decides to bring a Z4 M version with minimum 360 HP, the Boxster is in trouble again. Of course the Boxster isn't about power only but nowadays, when economies worldwide aren't working that well, people want a real VALUE for their money and they look twice before they spend their precious money on a car.
If people have a bad feeling by spending a lot of money for a car, they won't do that.
I have to admit that I don't understand Porsche's marketing strategy right now and it should be a SERIOUS warning for them that they sell more Cayenne than sports cars.
And even with the Cayenne they make a lot of mistakes, these mistakes will show off as soon as the new M-class and X5 show up. But what do I know...I'm just a dumb customer.
