    2002 996 Transmission Problem

I have 2002 996 with only 5000 miles on it. 2nd gear had been popping out when driving normal, so I took it to the dealership. They told me I needed a whole new transmission. Got the new transmission put in, and on the way home from the dealership, going 75mph on the highway, 6th gear popped out. Then some weird noise started to come from underneath the car, and the next thing I know the car turns completely off and the transmission is totally locked up. My poor 996 is then towed back to the dealership, where the story continues......... At least they have given me a 2004 Cayenne S as a loaner. Anyone have or know what transmission problems the 2002 have? Thanks.

    Re: 2002 996 Transmission Problem

The "2nd gear popping out" issue is a known problem with some 996's and tranny needs to be replaced to solve it, luckily you have a 4 year warranty in USA. Don't know what happened the second time to your transmission after repaired though.

    Re: 2002 996 Transmission Problem

Anyone have any experience with Porsche regarding the lemon law? I might be looking at my 3rd transmission in 5000 miles. And after stalling out in the middle of the highway, I am not to crazy to drive this car again. Thanks.

    Re: 2002 996 Transmission Problem

You need to check the specific lemon law in your state. You can call the state, or search for it on the state website. I have gone through the process in Georgia but that's not going to help you in NC...

    Good luck.

When you tried it in Georgia was it with Porsche? Thanks.

    Re: lemon law

Lemon law for a transmission problem in an 02? I seriously doubt you can make a claim.

So, the transmission broke... the dealer replaced it but did not install it correctly. OK you have the absolute right to have the dealer redo it and check if there was any other damage (unlikely) and if yes, fix it. These are sports cars that can and are repaired every day - these are not untouchable virgin maidens.

No, but the process is the same irrespective of the manufacturer. In Georgia, the OEM gets 3 repair attempts for standard stuff, one if it's a "safety" issue. You could make the argument that a transmission going out repeatedly is a safety problem...

The problem you would have, if this was a Georgia claim, is that you have to give the OEM a final notice and one final repair attempt. In my case, the OEM (GM) did not respond to my "final notice" letter in the allotted time under the law; 10 days as I recall. Since they failed to respond, there was no final repair attempt and we went to arbitration. The arbitrator listened to GM's lawyers, listened to my position (I did it myself) and then went for a ride in the car. They ruled in my favor as the arbitrator could experience the problem first hand...

Again, you should research the laws in your state. I can also tell you that many cars are purchased back outside of the lemon law process but that's typically when a lawyer gets involved...

    Good luck.

    ADias,

Yes your right, 3 transmissions with only 5000 miles on it is normal, and nearly getting killed on the highway is too. Wish you were in the car with me yesterday. Bet you would be singing a different tune.

Sounds horrible. But I don't believe in three consecutive transmission failures. You should definetely have the whole issue investigated and contacting PCNA might help too.

Let's set the record straight. You did not have 3 transmission failures. You had:

    1 - original transmission fails.

2 - dealer install 2nd transmission and makes installation mistake.

That's it. If there is a 3rd transmission, it is because of (2), which should not have happened.

You are absolutely correct to take the dealer to task as the apparent catastrophic failure while you were driving should not have happened. The dealer should make you whole, bringing back the car to full performance spec and he should compensate you somehow - maybe a new set of tires or something.

Oh... I still think you will not qualify for the lemon law.

Ok, from the 997 "Warranty and Customer Information" book for the great state of North Carolina:

If the new Porsche vehicle you have purchased does not conform to the manufacturer's express warranty, you may be entitled to a replacement or to compensation. However, IN ORDER TO EXERCISE YOUR RIGHTS, YOU MUST FIRST REPORT THE CONDITION IN WRITING TO PORSCHE CARS NORTH AMERICA, INC. AT THE ADDRESS OR TOLL FREE TELEPHONE NUMBER INDICATED ON THE INSIDE FRONT COVER OF THIS BOOKLET. If the vehicle has been inspected by the Dealer and your concern is still not corrected to your satisfaction, Porsche Cars NA recommends that you contact the Customer Commitment Department for assistance.

BEFORE YOU MAY BRING ANY ACTION IN A COURT, YOU MUST RESORT TO PORSCHE CARS NA'S INFORMAL DISPUTE RESOLUTION MECHANISM INDENTIFIED AT THE ADDRESS OR TELEPHONE NUMBER INDICATED ON PAGE 6 OF THIS BOOKLET. - Page 70 of the Warranty and Customer Information Model Year 2005 booklet

It looks like your state's lemon law covers the full 4 years of warranty.

    Address that they give:
    Porsche Cars North America Inc.
    980 Hammond Drive
    Suite 1000
    Atlanta, Georgia 30328

    Thanks Vtrader

    Thanks Vtrader for the info!

    1. Your assuming the dealer installed the 2nd transmission incorrectly. It's still on the rack at the shop, and no one knows yet. And if they didn't install it correctly thats an excuse not to contact Porsche about getting rid of this car?. They are PORSCHE certified mechanics. Did they not even test drive the vehicle? Sorry but that is very lame.

    2. Either way, I am looking at a 3rd transmission regardless of how it came to be. When I go to sell this car, it will not look to pretty to have to say, "it has only 5000 miles on it, but it has had the transmission replaced 3 times". You wouldn't buy this car.I wouldn't buy this car.

    The Vevrdict is in......

The dealer, as well as PCNA, called me today. They told me that there was a catastropic failure of the 2nd transmission. They think that the transmission some how fell in transit from Germany to the U.S. causing something to break internally. They won't know for sure until it's shipped back and evaluated. They said that this is a one in million shot. Maybe I should play the lotto

I must say I am extremely impressed with PCNA. They were very nice and understanding. They have offered me a settlement(i.e. extended warranty, etc)And the local dealer has also offered to buy the car back and sell me a new one at invoice.

I hope my experience never happens to any of you, but rest assured if it does PCNA will step up to the plate and make things right. Thanks to all of you for your input these last few days.

    Re: The Vevrdict is in......

Of course they did the right thing... and that is what some of us were telling you it would happen.

Just curious... are you accepting the new transmission or buying a new car?

    Re: The Vevrdict is in......

That's great!! I hope it works out!
