You love the rear of the 'BoxCoupe' or just the 987 in general? i didnt think there were any photos of the coupe rear yet.

It sounds like this is the start of people claiming the 987 isnt a 'real boxster' in the same way that seems to happen for each new 911. Usually the same people then buy one and complain about the next model a few years later

Is a SLK 55 AMG too close to a SL?

My opinion is, that there is enough place for such kind of cars.

Why is there a problem? The car looks pretty nice and I'm wating for a rs-version with a turbo-engine.
    Light and fast. Pure fun.

Re: Boxster Coupe resembles 911 too closely?

I think the idea of a "Boxster Coupe" is pretty strange. How can they even call it a Boxster (Boxer + roadster) when it's no longer a roadster??
Wouldnt it be both faster, cheaper and wiser to simply offer a "coupé"-look hardtop for the Boxster? I mean...isn't that what they're trying to build?
And remember the BMW Z3...succesful roadster turned into ugly-mother coupe. Porsche will no doubt pull it off designwise, but a "Boxster Coupe"... doesn't that already exist? Isnt that called...a 911?

Just sticking on the hardtop doesn't give the weight and rigidity benefits of a coupe. You may not like the looks of the BMW M Coupe, but it drove circles around the M Roadster (same engine). The M Coupe is one of the best driving BMW's ever built, IMHO..

Having owned a Boxster S (slightly modified) for 3 years and tracking it ... before i had to "upgrade" to a 996 becaue i needed extra seats for my newborn son ... i would say that the Boxster is the better balanced car with superior dynamic capabilities ... it only lacks power !!! And i'd take a bet, that a equally powered Boxster ... best setup chosen ... would be faster on a track like Nürburgring ... ?!

Maybe. But I still doubt it after watching a few tuned Boxster on the track, one with 450 HP and one with a GT3 engine And for how long? Porsche never built the Boxster with racing in mind and the structural integrity is great but really not made for track racing. Remember the 986 body cracks story?
The Boxster feels more dynamic because of it's mid engine design. But I doubt it is faster because the 911 has the advantage of the unbelievable traction capabilities.
And as a last point: have you never wondered why Walter Röhrl never bought a Boxster? He has (or had?) two 996 in his garage and he recently bought a 911 3.0 as far as I remember.

I know that Boxster owners don't like to hear that but the Boxster is an entry level Porsche. A good one, especially since the 987 is on the market but still entry level.
Some people also prefer the Roadster type of car over the Coupe or Cabriolet, this is something I understand.
But I would never understand somebody who goes for a 987 S instead of a 997 Carrera (not even S) for performance or handling reasons. To each his own I guess...

RC RC what are we going to do with you?

Porsches' supercar the CGT is a mid-engine car designed with enormous input from your beloved Walter Rohrl. It initially was designed for racing then turned to a commercial profit vehicle. If the rear engine configuration is better in traction and handling, why then did Porsche make their marque car a mid-engine?

    That is really, really true!

In fact the Z3 Coupe was the birth of my "Boxster Coupe" dreams...
Despite "entry level" discussions: the added value of an engine directly behind your back can be a VERY decisive factor

Re: Boxster Coupe resembles 911 too closely?

RC I knew from a few posts and the 987S review your were 911 biased. The 4 seat Carrera was made for the masses, not traction, a long time ago. Clearly, mid-engine is the better set up. The 986/987 is Porsche's entry level car, but that doesn't mean a 911 is better, although it is faster. The 986/987 is held back (power wise) on purpose, everyone knows this. Can you give use an asnwer why they don't give the 987S 320 hp..I think you know why. Why dosen't the Carrera GT have a rear-engine??? The 911 snobbery is unbleviebable. Stop fooling yourself. As you say, to each his own...

Re: Boxster Coupe resembles 911 too closely?

Also, if a 450hp engine or a GT3 engine was swapped, Im sure the car rigidity could be upgraded by Porsche as well (if they wanted to). As it stands a 986 can withstand 350 hp. Bottom line, 911/carrera is not better. Faster, not better, sorry. I guess 911 owners would like to think they have another advantge.

Re: Boxster Coupe resembles 911 too closely?

    I agree with Eurospeed.
It's definately a policy from Porsche. It resembles the Audi lineup, where the A4 1.8T is deliberately held back power-wise, because people have to pay more and hence feel they get more when they buy an A4 2.4 or 3.0.
Boxster or 911..it's a matter of religion.
I have a Boxster because I simply wouldnt be able to afford a 911 here in Denmark, wheer the taxes are crazy (180%), but have I had the money, Id not pick the 911 anyways. It would be a choice between the Boxster and the Carrera GT.
Why? Because I belive the mid-engine setup is by far superior to the rear-engine setup. The 911 is a great car, no doubt, but the extra two child-seats is a compromise from way back when the 911 first came. It's not the perfect setup for a sportscar, nor is it in any way practical.
The Boxster is an entry-level Porsche because Porsche has marketed it that way, not because the driving dynamics, the setup or its performance in any way is entry-level. Just my humble opinion.
