    Re: 991 Speedster

    Whoopsy:

Now no one try and tell me it's about the connection with the car with a manual, that's BS. When I raced a Cup car, I am fully connected to the car, at braking and turning the car is fully at the limit, the 4 tires are telling me exactly what the car is doing and what it will do, there is no time to take a hand off the wheel and find the gear stick. I fully control when the gearbox will shift or not all the while fully controlling the steering angle also.

The appeal of the manual is the DIY factor.  You get a sense of satisfaction (I do) when you nail the upshift and the downshift perfectly in a sequence of corners in the canyons.  The whole idea of manual shifting gears yourself in today's modern world is kind of like owning mechanical watches.  I'm sure the clock on my iPhone/iWatch tells the most precise time in the world, but there is no emotion when I look at my phone.

We human beings are weird creatures.  We often like to do things the hard way sometimes.  And it's nice to have choices in our garages.

But I do agree with you Nick that if I'm on a track, I don't want to be anywhere near a manual because all I want to do is go fast and break my own lap times.  In those instances, I want the best technology to my disposals and pass people on the track left and right indecision

    Re: 991 Speedster

The comparison is more like carburetor vs fuel injection instead of mechanical watch.

In this modern time there are still a lot for mechanics who prided their ability to tune a carburetor.

Doesn't mean manuals are good for modern times though.

If not for the US and North American market, Porsche would not have made anymore manuals. They are the last holdouts on transmissions.

    Re: 991 Speedster

So why don’t you wear Casios? Remember in the 90s everyone thought the mechanical watches would be killed by the quartz?

I don’t know about you, but if you ever purchase older cars, two things dates these cars.  First is the navigation (if equipped) and the transmission.  I had a 360CS, I love everything about it except the stupid single clutch automated F1 transmission.  If that car had a manual transmission, it would be an instant classic.  Same thing with the Carrera GT.  Can you imagine Porsche installing the Tiptronic gearbox in that thing? mail

A lot of modern cars are now too fast to be equipped with the manual transmission and this is where I believe Porsche has found its niche.  Modern GT3RS can’t compete with Mclarens or Ferrari in terms of power, not even close.  So the NA engine (some may argue that is an obsolete dinosaur too) and the manual transmission has become Porsche GT cars unique attributes.

Imagine the CGT with a proper PDK like in the 918, that would be heaven.

Canyon driving is spotty at best. The police know the best spots and generate considerable revenue for the counties by issuing citations. 95% of the driving in Southern California is in traffic. I cannot think of more painful driving experience than a manual transmission in traffic. enlightened

Good call on the Dundon, had it since day one on mine too. Fantastic product, if I bit loud if you go all out (race headers etc... angel). Did they take out the particulate filter on yours then?

And the best drivers knows where Police will be and adjust accordingly. Mainly, Police never set up in corners, they alway do it on the straights, mid or end of straights to be exact.

Any monkey can go fast on straights, so that's pointless, smarts ones only go fast in the corners and that's where the fun is anyways.

Since the social distancing started, our roads are getting empty and many start driving really fast on the road from Vancouver to Whistler, Police are having a field day almost everyday, think they average 4 cars impounded every week right now for going 40+km/hr over, fastest clocked was 183km/hr in a 80 zone. I just came back from Whistler and there was 4 speed traps going up and 2 more coming back down.

The OPF is part of the headers, so when I installed the Dundon system, the OPF was removed automatically.  I’m running street headers with cat and their new electronic valve loud muffler for the Speedster.

Technically it’s a baffle, which mimics the back pressures of a OPF so that Porsche doesn’t need to reprogram the ECU for North American cars.  So North America cars might sound a tad louder but it still sounds horrible to me 😂

The gold heritage emblem, I have that on my car as well.  But I was referring to the side decals.  The heritage speedster side decals is different than the one used on the 911R.
