    Re: GT4RS

    Whoopsy:

Honestly, how many sets of tires one go through on a track day? Unless a puncture occurred, most won't even change tire once.

Even the Michelin slicks can last a day lapping.

If someone is bringing a set of track tires to change over at the track, that means a trailer is involved, not too hard to throw the extra long torque wrench for centre lock onto the trailer. Yes it's true it takes 2 person to change a wheel with centre lock, I am pretty sure someone don't mind sitting inside the car stepping on the brakes to help out.

If it was easier, I would rotate the tires (left to right) during lunch at my track (almost all right turns on clockwise track)...

During Covid, it's more comfortable not to have a stranger sit in the car pressing the brakes...

Most performance tires are directional though, to be able to rotate tires left to right, they needed to be re-mounted on the wheel, no?

Slicks would be a grey area, they aren't really directional but if the tire is ran in one direction, it's not suppose to run in the other direction I was told but can't confirm.

    Re: GT4RS

I think, that the center locks are a pain in the neck, not because you'll need two people, but because of the time that is needed; like when you have to check the brakes, or after after you ended up somewhere and need to check for damages. I guess that the CL are more  "function follows form" and one should get a CUP if it matters

No, all the OEM Summer/Track tires for the GT3 are asymmetrical (outside stays outside when you rotate), not directional...

Maybe the Winter tires are directional though (helps with snow)

    Re: GT4RS

FWIW: My team in Nürburg never changes the rotational direction of the MPSC's.

Not sure if there is a real purpose (maybe the rubber is cured in a direction - if that makes any sense) of it or if it is because they also sell tires.

    Re: GT4RS

Some years back we were running Dunlop slicks and the engineer from Dunpop mentioned that these slicks could be swapped around. He also came with some technical explanation, which I do not remember, but it sounded as if not all slicks could be swapped once they had done a direction.

Porsche 718 GT4 RS on track and road... (including video)

Is there a more desirable car in the 2020 pipeline than Stuttgart's most extreme Cayman?

    (Monday 22 June 2020)

It's conceivable that you don't need updating on the progress of the GT4 RS. But we're going to update you anyway, because it's hard to think of a forthcoming model better equipped to get the juices flowing. Like 911s bearing the badge, the first RS Cayman is set to be an ultra-specialist model, maximising the performance of its platform in a low production run. Porsche hasn't done one before for the same reason it hesitated doing a GT Cayman - it didn't want to step on the toes of its more famous, higher-priced sibling. Plainly, it has overcome that concern.

That's a very good thing because the GT4 RS obviously has the potential to be something special. Using the same 4.0-litre as the GT4 but with even more GT3 components, expect it to produce comfortably more.power while leaving sufficient headroom for the latest 911 GT3 to be designated the more senior offering. As the latest spy video confirms, it will have earned a richer flat-six soundtrack, and almost certainly be PDK only.

The 'standard' GT4 is already an astonishingly capable track car, but expect the RS to shift the handling bias even more toward circuit driving. We’re expecting significant weight loss to be accompanied by GT4 Clubsport-aping chassis settings, on a platform that’s dwarfed by the 992. As the new footage shows, not even the rough stuff of the Nurburgring’s Karussell upsets the car’s composure; the big aero and swan neck wing suggests it’ll deal with high speed stuff equally well.

It’s not yet clear how far back the lockdown period has pushed Porsche’s development schedules. 718 GT4 RS test cars have been running with very little camo since August last year, so this freshly-sighted model’s lack of covers doesn’t necessarily mean its arrival is imminent. The GTS 4.0 – the lowest-powered Porsche to use Stuttgart’s new flat-six – is now fully launched, following the latest GT4, suggesting there’s space in the calendar for the 718 GT4 RS’s arrival in the coming months. But Porsche is being tight-lipped, so we don’t know for sure.

Don’t forget, too, that Porsche is looking to reignite 718 sales after the switch to four-pot power triggered a slight reduction in popularity for Europe and America. The RS offers the model a halo-grade model to remind people that the Cayman is fully back to its best. Not that Porsche needs that excuse to launch one of its most exciting cars in years. We. Can’t. Wait.

You think the GT4 will eclipse the .2 GT3's performance for less money?  Seems possible to me - offer customers the option of a 4RS or 992 GT3 to go faster Smiley.  I've always thought that competition was a great fuel for innovation and improvement - interesting when it comes from inside the brand.  Will be interesting if 4RS has option for R tires and not 992 GT3 (Porsche so far reserves those tires for RS only).

I doubt they will put 500hp into the GT4RS as it would outperform the 3RS as well...let's be honest here - the 911 is the loved child. I see a 450hp for the 4RS and this will be tough but possible to match the GT3 but not above it. I can be wrong but the business model is consistent. Smiley

450hp with the right weight and other specs (especially tires) could be faster than GT3 on track.

    Re: GT4RS

“Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS spied”

The incoming Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS has been spied again, this time wearing some centerlock wheels...

    (28 August 2020)

Porsche has been spied testing the first Cayman GT4 RS – a lighter, harder and faster version of our 2019 evo Car of the Year. It’s expected that the GT4 RS will follow Porsche’s traditional RS recipe of combining lighter components, aggressive aero and an increase in engine power to create what could be the most exciting Cayman yet.

The GT4 RS should find its mechanical baseline in the standard GT4, utilising a version of the naturally aspirated 4-litre flat-six also in use in the GTS 4.0. Power will be raised above that of the standard GT4’s 414bhp, but is unlikely to go significantly higher so as not to get too close to the next 911 GT3 we will see later this year.

Since 2015, all of Porsche's RS models have only been available with Porsche’s dual-clutch PDK transmission, a trend we expect to continue with this GT4 RS. Standard GT4 and GTS models will also be available with Porsche’s seven-speed PDK later this year, joining the current six-speed manual.

Clear on this prototype are the GT division’s significant changes to the aero package, swapping out the standard GT4 wing with a top-mounted unit on chunky development stacks. The bonnet is also new, and mimics that of the previous 991.2 911 GT3 RS with its two NACA-style ducts and central crease.

In contrast to previous test cars is the inclusion of a 20-inch centerlock wheel design, which is a first for any Cayman derivative. The wheel itself looks to be the same magnesium item as is seen on other Porsche GT models fitted with the optional Weissach package, a typically popular option.

A more interesting adaptation on this mule is the replacement of the Cayman’s rear quarter windows with a set of vertical louvres. It’s impossible to know from these images whether they are functional or not, but if they are it would require a big change to the interior layout to incorporate a large high-mounted intake of any description, segmenting the engine compartment from the rest of the cabin in a similar way to that seen in a Ferrari F8 Tributo or Audi R8, rather than the standard Cayman’s open layout with the engine residing underneath a carpeted section. Look closely at the images and you’ll also notice the rear windscreen is also blackened from inside, adding further mystery to what a future Cayman GT4 RS’s interior could feel like.

Porsche has not yet confirmed its development of the GT4 RS, but with Porsche’s GT division proving to be one of its most profitable, there is reason not to expand on its mid-engined range, especially as the 992 911 GT3 promises to push the rear-engined flagship further up the performance spectrum.

    Re: GT4RS

With a decently optioned 718 GT4 sitting at around $140K CDN, it will be interesting to see what the pricing will be for this model, especially if it indeed has PDK. Base price of the 992 C4S is $140K here, and with options the GT4RS would be competing with some low mile 991.2 GT3 cars. Lots of choices in that price range. Or, you could get a 4.5 litre conversion on your 981 GT4, including shorter ratio gears and ~490 HP at the wheels for about $40K. Decisions decisions... indecision

    Re: GT4RS

I expect this car to be at around $180kCAD.

It will blow the doors off 991 GT3s in the handling department with a mid engine layout plus RS level suspension.

This is one car I am waiting for.

That would make it approx $150k US, 50% premium on GT4.  Too high of a guess IMHO unless that includes lots of optional equipment.

    Re: GT4RS

Yeah pricing will be a key. But I just can’t see it priced anything less from what’s going into the car. Take it for what’s in it, not what parts for what to go into it.
