Re: OFFICIAL: New Porsche 911 Turbo S (2020)

We can argue if the M2CS deserved 1st place, but the Turbo S is last place is disturbing.  At least the Turbo S won TopGear's Speedweek.

The Turbo S is a monster, no doubt.  But it is a continuation/superpowered iteration of the 992 model.  Not something new or groundbreaking.  EVO probably wants to focus on something more fundamentally different. So, ranking doesn't bother me a bit.

Interesting point. My wife, she always wanted the Turbo S for whatever weird (wing, etc. Smiley) reason, actually now wants the Carrera 4S or the upcoming (spring/summer) GTS. We'l see... The Turbo S is too "in your face" for her and her work, she wants a red car and the Turbo S may be a little bit too much in this color.

She needs to do a test-drive first I guess, Turbo S Cab will be brought from Stuttgart for her, dealer has a C4S Cab test-car in stock.

The six cars ranked above the two Porsches are nothing different from the standard and nothing new in concept..

Three mid-engine supercars. two powerful superminis and a small sporty front engine RWD BMW. These types of cars have been with us since the 1960s.

Probably, EVO are having a break this year, until next year when they will nominate the new GT3 as COTY. Judging from previous years they like GT3s.

Thank you, I will pass that on, Sydney. Smiley She is going to do a test-drive next week, I will accompany her, will take some pics. She wants the convertible btw..

Here is the C4S Convertible she already "configured" but it could become a GTS or (less likely now) a Turbo S instead.

I agree, most people don't have a clue about the various 911 models and do not recognize them but my wife parks her car next to my business and it really attracts too much attention.
Right now she is thinking about getting two cars, the 992 Carrera 4S or GTS and a Mercedes A45 S (we had one for a weekend, it sounds like crap but drives nicely, has an amazing interior for such a small car and it has AWD). The A45 S would be the daily driver and the 911 the special car for driving to patients, elderly homes, weekends, etc.. We'll see... Right now the next test-drive which was planned for Wednesday may not happen due to the hard lockdown (Corona) Germany is initiating Wednesday.

    Two comments if I may.

    • Why the Alcantara steering wheel? Doesn't it look somewhat out of place on a non-GT car.
    • The optional Aluminium  PDK Wahlheber is an improvement on the original part which looks rather cheap.

Re: OFFICIAL: New Porsche 911 Turbo S (2020)

I can understand that Porsche does not see the Turbo S as their track car but if they believe it is worth their while to make it available for tests likes these they might as well go all the way and offer more sticky tyres as an option so that they can supply it with those for tests like these. If they take the trouble to offer the sport suspension and supply vehicles fitted with it for these tests why not fit tyres that will allow apples for apples comparison in a test like this. The Turbo S would have set the best lap time if it were on the same rubber as the Lambo or the Ferrari.  It would be interesting to see which car is going to win their drivers car of the year - my money is on the Cayman GT4 as they seem to like it a lot even though I think the Turbo S represents a much larger improvement compared to the previous model than the Cayman GT4. Also, Turbo S has much wider range of talents making it possible to enjoy under more circumstances.

I think you are underestimating the quality of tire development at Porsche. They are working as close as possible with tire manufacturers to achieve the best times without many compromises. The tires are perfectly adapted to AWD, chassis setups, ESC/TC setups and whatnot.

I do not really think that a "stickier" tire would do much for the Turbo S, the AWD system works quite amazingly.

Porsche always does a fantastic job to adapt the tires to a particular model, especially lately.

Lamborghini started to do the same with the STO, the Bridgestone tire was developed specifically for this particular car, this is a first for them. There will be two variants, a Potenza road version and a race version.

Since Lamborghini and Porsche are going to be "moved" together much closer in the near future (already established by VW Group), I expect them to even work together in tire development since they will be using the same platforms.

There is so much potential in tire development, I think we only scratched the surface yet.

Re: OFFICIAL: New Porsche 911 Turbo S (2020)

In the past the reason was simply Dry-sump for Cup tires vs normal road car engines for normal tires. If I am not mistaken it was because of G forces they could not guarantee the oiling at all times during cornering - dunno if this still applies for a 992 engine. We have a good contact at Michelin at the Porsche cup  and indeed the tire development for each model with wall-stiffness , treat , in line with modern damping is all playing a factor. Now the new tires even have a app where you can see each tires temperature and if it's in its working-window (green) or not.

Re: OFFICIAL: New Porsche 911 Turbo S (2020)

Cup tyres were allowed by the factory on 997.2 Carrera S for the first time on normal 911s. The then new DFI engine although not a dry sump engine, it guaranteed lubrication at high G forces because of the electronically controlled oil pump that gave  the benefit of on-demand oil supply

I would think that on the new engines of today oil starvation would not be an issue
