Ford has a new version of the ecoboost Mustang dubbed the High Performance Package which when combined with the Performance Handling Package creates what I think could be an actual sports car as opposed to a muscle car or a pony car classification.

Instead of the US sourced 2.3 turbo motor, they are using the 2.3 turbo motor from Valencia, Spain which had been used in the Focus RS. A new turbo unit and a few other changes for a longitudinally instead of transverse mounted motor, and now tuned to 332hp/350tq (a bit down from the 350/350 in the RS)

It can pull 1g in cornering and reach 0-60 in 4.5 (automatic) or 5 seconds with the manual. Has a 40% wider band of peak torque over the US ecoboost motor and still has 90% of peak hp at redline (instead of falling flat at high revs).

With a couple of hundred pounds less weight on the front end compared to the GT Mustang, but using the brakes and some other parts from the GT, the car seems to be garnering favorable reviews for both handling and the characteristics of the engine. Even the sound is described as the best turbo 4 exhaust except for the Alfa 4C.

For about 34 to 39k dollars, it seems like a cheap GT350 for street instead of track usage.

Will check if I can find out the price tag for this thing in the EU but it seems that around 60k is realistic.

Don't know about EU, but I was surprised how many Mustangs I saw in Australia this winter.  The V8 coupe starts at $AUD 68k, very fair price for Australia where import taxes are crippling.  Of course they no longer make anything in Aus, so I think the Mustang is a spiritual replacement for the V8 Falcons and Commodores of olden days....

Is it possible to limit the power/rev range? My son still doesn't back down from his idea to get a Dodge RAM 1500 V8, he thinks he looks ridiculous in any smaller car (he is over 1,90 m now at 16)  and while I can follow his argument, this is not a car I would want to see a beginner in. The Dodge RAM is not fast but it is heavy and he can do a lot of harm in it as a beginner.  Then, there are still the other US models like Challenger or Camaro with speed/rev limiter, so he cannot go crazy with the cars. Not sure yet though, probably not the right car(s) for our region. We'll see...

I got my oldest daughter a red convertible mustang when she turned 16. She still wishes she could have it back.  
BTW - happy American Father’s Day last Sunday!  I celebrated being a grandfather for the first time. 
 

RC - I still highly recommend the Model3 for your son. It can be speed adjusted and you can always see where the car is via smartphone. Not to mention it will be safe for him.  Too bad he hates it but I’m certain if he drives it he will like it. Would be fun to try and see what happens. 
 

Talk to my son (about his height, he doesn't like it).  He loves sports cars, I never understood when he suddenly wanted a pickup truck a year ago and he hasn't changed. I hope he doesn't read this now (he is occasionally on Rennteam, so is my daughter), he will kill me.

Challenger...Camaro...speed limiters and rev limiters, especially for unexperienced drivers (or the valet ). No problem at all for a young driver, other than the Challenger being a pretty big and heavy car.

The Dodge RAM is a different story, it is probably slower than many smaller hatchbacks with under 200 hp but I am not too keen of giving a beginner a 3 ton car with the size of a small truck in his hands. If he overlooks a pedestrian or bicycle rider in this thing, maybe even a smaller car, well...  We'll see but I certainly don't want to get him killed, don't worry.

No Boxster, too dangerous for him. He is a beginner and no matter how talented or not he is (he doesn't have a driver's license yet, so difficult to assess if he is a good driver and/or likes it), he will make mistakes in the beginning and I don't want him to hurt himself...or others.

If I get him a US V8 car (there is a big if...), it will be a car which some sort of speed/rev limiter. My former Mustang guy told me that he can modify the car's software to fit anything I want but unfortunately, this is illegal in Germany. So some sort of valet or teen driver mode will have to do. The Dodge RAM is a different story, not very fast but very heavy, very big and difficult to drive for a beginner (I assume) on German roads. I don't even know how he wants to park this thing, let alone driving with it to school, his teachers would crucify him for that (most of them are leftist and his class mates aren't much different, thanks to Greta and all). Any US car in the hands of a beginner would actually be like a red flag for anyone around here, so maybe not the best idea. My neighbours aren't a problem anymore, they know how car crazy we all are and basically all of them are my wife's patients, so...  School and teachers? Different story.

It is way too early anyway, he decided to concentrate on school and will take his driver's license next year, not this year (he wanted to drive starting at 17 but school is more important, thank god).
