    check your gaskets

after skip mentioned some issues with door gaskets, last weekend my "investigation" also included all my firewall & door gaskets. turned out that my driver door gasket was not fully angaged with the frame! see picture below.

i think my car is not a lemon, it's a citrus plantation!

ps: i put the gasket in it's place - this was an easy fix.

    Re: check your gaskets

Really Ossi, this inattention to detail is inexcusable. Do you have a launch vehicle? If so, do you think the factory had orders from management to push out as many 997's as possible early on, and that could be the cause of some of the car's shortcomings?

My 1995 C4's build quality is outstanding, and that was first year run of the 993! My car is almost 10 years old, and I hate to imagine what our 997's will be like a decade from now.

    Re: check your gaskets

i don't really have a launch car. here is what i have:

    997S Manual
    Seal Gray
    Black Full
    Nav
    CD Changer
    Power Seat Package
    Bose

according to the dealer, this was a car ordered by a customer who ended up dropping out from the deal before the car got to the dealer. the car was delivered to the dealer about 2 weeks after launch weekend. i picked it up with 32mls on the car.

does anyone know how to decode a 997 VIN?

    thanks,

I've never heard that one before; a citrus plantation!
You're a funny guy...anyway I'm sorry to hear that. You were thinking about sellig the car? Maybe you should, buy another 997s from the same dealer and tell him to exchange your car for a new one at a fair price. (meaning big discount).

Worth a try. I mean, once he'll know you're pissed off with the car he sold you and that you want to sell the car, he'll be more understanding...

Could be that the Prep center is messed up- understaffed?

I know BMW has a huge facility in the USA where they clean up the car go over alot of the details before the cars are put on trucks to dealers for final delivery.

The problems you guys are pointing out might suggest that Porsche has messed up in thse final stages of prep before delivery.

So maybe we can all relax thinking the actual assembly of the car is high quality as usual, just that the factory expects a pre-delivery team to get all the lose ends tied up.

Since they are all easy fixes (realigning gaskets, seating filters) makes me think that the pre delivery prep crew (if any) is all that's screwed up.

Re: Could be that the Prep center is messed up- understaffed

RC: I suggest you point ossi's problems to PAG if you can. They definitely should hear this and make corrections.

Re: Could be that the Prep center is messed up- understaffed?

Max - that could be the case. I've owned 4 late-model BMW's and they spend a day or two at the "VPC" (vehicle prep. center) just prior to being trucked to the dealer. The VPC is a mini-factory where final inspections take place. Minor bodywork, etc...is done as well if needed due to the rigors of overseas transport.

Re: Could be that the Prep center is messed up- understaffed

If life hands you lemons you should make lemonade Well you have to decide weather to turn this sucker in or keep dealing with it. Start sending some positive vibes, talk to her and tell her that she really is a good car. Give that big lemon a kiss Maybe things 'll turn for you Good luck!

They read this forum and they make corrections regarding certain issues but sometimes I'm not really happy with their reaction time.

Yeah. PAG should not slack on QC (quality control). High QC has always been a P-car hallmark - it is very difficult to recover (especially in the US market) from even a perceived decrease in QC.

Re: Could be that the Prep center is messed up- understaffed?

    Max,

I am glad you are the one to point this out. I decided against a similar post earlier today because I didn't want to be called a blind loyalist to Porsche.

I agree with you that between the factory and ossi, there should have been at least 3 more pairs of eyes going over the vehicle. The person accepting the car at the US Port, the technician at the dealership making the car ready for delivery and the salesman whose livlihood depends on making his clients happy.

Re: Could be that the Prep center is messed up- understaffed?

personally, i think the car should have never left zuffenhausen with these issues (air filter, rattles, gaskets). the module failure is different as it seems to be a software bug.

    just my 2c,

Can someone explain to me what a gasket is? I'm not sure what to look for in the photo.. sorry!

Maybe better to call them grommets, though they serve gasketing purposes too.

where the wire conduit meets the door frame (body of car). These should have large rubber cushions that will get compressed between the door and door frame when the door is shut.

The one in photo is not correctly inserted into the door frame (body of car) so that it seats properly whehn door is shut.

    my amateur guess.

I think what heppens is when teh car is about to leave it gets all these checks (one in 15 gets a BIG inspection).

Guys that do this tear into the car (e.g. under filters and behing door gaskets etc) to inspect what they have to inspect. They are NOT experts in getting the car back together so they just leave it and have the "final prep" guys put all the details back together.

Just a guess on my part.

E.g. when the guys come to fix a leak in their skylight at your house they tear into the roof and fix their window. They're not roofers so they leave the roof repair to the roofers. etc... . They're not expected to fix the roof they cut into, they are responsible jus to fix the skylight window.

Re: Could be that the Prep center is messed up- understaffed

Thanks Max, I see the problem now. My screen was to dark before and I couldn't see the broken seal.

By the way Max, are you from Germany?

Google: in search field, type "VIN" then the long number.
