    718 T

This section of the forum is quiet these days as most of the 981 owners have switched to other models and boycotted the 718 4 cylinder cars so I thought I'd update it.

We've had our 718 Cayman for over a year and a half now and really like it. I'm not as bothered by the switch to the four cylinder turbo as some are but can see why they miss the flat six in terms of sound. I still have my 981 spyder so can get a fix in that department when I want Smiley  The main issue with the Cayman was that it was not getting a great deal of use and the lack of a folding roof was a much bigger factor in that than we realised when I bought it. I bought it new for a great price from my dealer and was offered a very good price for it from a friend at an independent specialist dealer so I was on the look out for a suitable Boxster. The new T model appealed as it offers worthwhile chassis and trim options that aren't avialable on the base or S models and offers better ownership value than the GTS version IMHO. I looked at buying new but couldn't agree upon a deal I was happy with so I've been keeping an eye on the used market.

A perfectly spec'ed car appeared around 6 weeks ago and after a bit of haggling I agreed a deal with it's original owner who turned out to be a junior celebrity who wasn't using it due to a career schedule that saw them working abroad most of the year. It had only done a couple of thousand miles and is as new. I've detailed it thoroughly with agood machine polish and surface sealant and it looks better than any car I've collected new from a dealership in that regard.

Here are a few photo's post detailing. It's got a pretty high spec with a lot of options boxes ticked off. I'm absolutely delighted that I'm not the onetaking the spanking on initial depreciation this time around which makes a refreshing change for my Porsche purchases Smiley Smiley  It's Guards red with the full leather T interior with the Sport-Tex inserts with red pinstripes, optional Carrera Sport wheels, PDK, LED lights with PDLS etc.

The Dino is not about outright speed anymore - it's heyday in that regard has long since passed by - but is more of a relaxed cruiser. It's still capable of a decent turn of speed and makes a glorious noise when rowing through the gears. If you are in the right mood it can be a lot of fun.  It looks tiny and incredibly delicate next to the 718.

Smiley The Dino is, like many classic cars, a car to enjoy and to savor, like a good old wine (if I would drink wine Smiley Smiley).

Btw: There aren't many classic cars I would love to own/drive but the Dino is certainly one of them. Congrats. Smiley

    Re: 718 T

Interesting read about your 718 . There is definitely a negative approach to the car because of the 4 cylinder and it influences the perception people have of the car . The sound difference is real , but efficiency , probably not at all .

My sales guy wants to by a 718 GTS ( as there are very good deals on 2nd hand ones ) , upgrade the suspensions and take what ever he can out of the car to make it lighter  . It would be to take to the track . He is sure the car would then be faster then  GT4' s and 991.1 GT3  , as the extra torque gives a real plus .

Lowering weight isn't always a huge (track) performance improvement. Sometimes this can ruin a very good/balanced OEM setup. Smiley

    Re: 718 T

Looks really terrific ISUK and many thanks for both the report and helping to reinvigorate the Boxster Board on RT! Prices of low mileage 718 GTS almost on par with the older 981 GTS like ours. Although much faster and better in every way (other than engine) to the older model I get real enjoyment from the wonderful engine sound of ours I could never be tempted. I suspect even the 718 six cylinder rumoured for next year will be a very much silenced car compared with ours too.

I follow Janko Lind on youtube a bit with a Cayman T and find it interesting to somehow define the „Art of driving“...lighter wheels, suspension upgrade etc...interesting...

    Re: 718 T

I've owned quite a number of 981 models DC so can appreciate your attachment to your GTS. Of all the variants I've owned (including the Cayman GTS and GT4) thiis version is by far the loudest and the one I'd jump in for a fun drive in the sunshine kiss I've have it for nearly 4 years now and can't see myself selling it anytime soon.

Nice update ISUK, but I'm not sure it is only RT that has boycotted the 718, I see very few around.  Anyone have an idea of how these have sold relative to the previous gen?

Here are some sales stats for the US and Europe for the 718 models. Sales have been generally holding up fairly well.

Haven't seen many 718 in Germany but a couple of years ago, the roads were full of Boxsters. I think that many Boxsters have been replaced by SUVs (Macan, X3, etc.). Smiley

I don't see many new 718 Boxsters or Caymans. The preowned NA versions are the most sought after. Some current owners are waiting for the rumored flat-six to trade up.

Waiting.... but would need a lot of convincing that it would be worth probably twice the value of our current 981 GTS to upgrade!

I'm certainly not upgrading my 991 GTS for the same reason. I had thought about trading for a GTS Targa 4S, but not at the price dealers were offering.

And even though it may not be a muffled turbo and is an atmospheric 4.0L flat-6, it probably won't sound as good as the 981 because of current noise and emissions restrictions.

However, it will sound infinitely better than the current turbo fours found in the 718 twins.  That, plus the increase in power, is what will make a GTS 4.0 very desirable.  One can easily imagine that a 4.2l variant in the 992 GTS would make a great addition too.

No one denies that the 718 in four cylinder turbo engine form is quick, but the crude way that ghastly engine delivers that performance is just plain awful and unbecoming of any modern Porsche.

unfortunately, very well said...the very and only Porsche loaner I handed back to the dealer happily (sarcasm) ...  performance though is amazing ... on track, my GTS (340 hp) cannot keep up with turbo of the T (310 hp) ...
