Steve Sutcliffe from UK Autocar Mag on the Turbo vs 360

    Dear all,
For those of you who know Autocar magazine (one the most repectable magazine with AMS IMO)
Steve Sutcliffe is one of their main journalists, highly competent IMO.
Here are a couple of questions I posted on the Autocar mag website, got the replys rapidly which is appreciable.

    Question:
    Dear Steve, Two questions:
1-For the same price, would you go for a 360 Modena or a 996 Turbo? Considering it will not be a daily driver but a pleasure car with occasionnal track days.
2-The Turbo 450hp you tested recently, did it have that new option sport chassis that lowers the car by 20mm for better handling? If yes, how was it and would you recommend it? Thank you, Francois.

    Answers:
    1 - 996 turbo: there's no comparison frankly
2 - recommend wholeheartedly the engine upgrade but haven;t tried the lower ride height. Driven plenty of GT2s which are lower than regular tubo and the ride is pretty hard. They understeer badly, too, but this could be for a whole host of reasons other than just ride height. I'd keep the suspension standard and go for the engine upgrade if I were you.

    Have fun
    SS

Rennteamers and Christian, what do you think about his answer concerning the sport chassis (X73)?
    Thanks,
    Fanch.

Re: I also read his section

quite interesting article as well, will your question be posted in Autocar??

Maybe you can ask him to advertise rennteam.com

Re: I also read his section

I wish my question was posted but the website only posts one question a day and mine didn't make it
Shame...He replied, that's veey nice already

    Ciao!
    Fanch.

I have always felt the 996TT is the best all around

sport car in the world. However, I did not find it particularly exciting to drive. It is very civil and at higher speed the sensation is akin to riding a luxury car.

In addition there is a glout of TT's and frankly only the true Porsche enthusiast could distinguish it from a 996 C4S or even a C2. It is a lot of money to spend on a very common car.:(

    Re: luxury car at speed?

    Nick
I guess it depends on how you drive it. True in the Viper at 190 mph
I felt "at risk", not so the TT..... but NEVER like a Rolls!

    Re: C4S and Turbo

"frankly only the true Porsche enthusiast could distinguish it from a 996 C4S or even a C2. It is a lot of money to spend on a very common car.:( "

True in away, but I know many people spend more money on cars that look disguise or common, for example the S class is very common car, S63 cost a lot more than the Turbo.. Even so, people choose to debadge it.
Ferrari sometime is not the right 'image' for some people. I used to have a 360 and loved the car more than anything. As much as I loved it, I can't own it because of the images and rumors that create If I have enough money just to own a Ferrari for track, I would choose the Ferrari anyday over the Turbo.

    Re: C4S and Turbo

    Hi William,

would you really buy Ferrari as a dedicated track car

There seem to be lots of faster and cheaper options which are probably
more fun to drive as well. Some Brit cars like Radical SR3, for instance.
If you want GT, the Cup car should be pretty good

My point is that all Ferraris are darn good street cars with compromises
made to make them good for the street driving. Why pay for the stuff
you don't want on the track?

If you want to compete in Ferrari Challenge, it's a different story ...

Wayne fortunately or unfortunately (?) I have only driven a

TT at 125mph. 190 mph is beyond my comprehension. I probably wouldn't feel a thing.

    Re: not all the Ferrari

F40, F50..etc are very good track cars but not very good road cars. They were made legal to drive on the street for easy transport from your home to the track.

But you are right.. There are many cars out there make better track cars than Ferraris. But the issue about track car is that constant tunning are nesssary, for example. one of my friend bought a E36 M3 Group A race car, no one can figure out how to tune the engine and they have to fly a bunch of engineers plus hotel room just to tune up the car for every track day.

Ferrari easily be describe as track car come right out the box. Where as British's fav track car like Catahem, Radical...etc all require tools and technical setup.

Actually the best track car people always said are cars that build by themselves

Re: Steve Sutcliffe from UK Autocar Mag on the Turbo vs 360

1 - I am afraid that such clear answer to the 360 vs. TT question is impossible to give. I have driven the X50 turbo last Wednesday and while I am deeply impressed by the car's qualities I would not dare to compare these two cars in just one brief statement. The truth is that Modena and TT are two fantastic cars with very distinct qualities. Both are breath taking and provide maximum driving pleasure. But each in an entirely different way

2 - After my test ride of the X50 turbo I am even more inclined to wait for availability of X73. Compared to the Modena I consider the standard TT setup slightly too soft.

Re: Steve Sutcliffe from UK Autocar Mag on the Turbo vs 360

    In reply to:

The relationship between lower ride height and consequent greater understeer that Sutcliffe is making is, frankly, not worthy of a good car journalist. The understeer dialed in the GT2 by the factory has nothing to do with the lower ride height, but it was obtained, on purpose, with the geometry, camber and sway bar settings in order to make the rwd 462hp car safer in factory form.

The set up I came up with my GT2 had the car sitting around 1-1.5 cms lower than stock(William knows something about it !) and, believe me, there was very little understeer going on at the limit!

    Re: speed

    Nick
YOU REALLY need to enter Silverstate race. Even first timer can have a tech speed of
140 with minimal safety equipment.May is the next one.

Re: Steve Sutcliffe from UK Autocar Mag on the Turbo vs 360

I definitly agree with you Luigi.
I just wanted Rennteamers to know what Sutcliffe thought about the issue.
The man is surely biased towards Porsche!
    BTW,
Bought a 1/18 red Enzo and a 1/43 Modena this week end,

One day, my friends, I will get a 1/1
    Fanch.
PS: The Enzo looks great on the shelf between the F50 and the Carrera GT
