Too big too wide at the back and too heavy. That said I always had a soft spot for the old 8 series.....

I agree but the lease cost for these puppies is ridiculously low, especially compared to Porsche or other sports car companies.

My lease is lower than the lease of my last Boxster. And I think I have all extras ordered

Re: New BMW 8 Series (2018)

Picked up my new M850i convertible yesterday. Only done 60miles in it. But drove my GT3 back to back this morning.
what a difference. I love the diversity of them. The GT3 feels like an agile rabbit in comparison. No surprise there. But the 850 is easily the best BMW engine I have ever experienced. More AMG than BMW. They did an amazing job. Need to get used to the 850 rear steering. It turns on a dime. Much more than I would ever expect. Off to do some more miles in it now.

Compared to that new ginormous 4 series front, the 8 series is a beauty. Very big car though (visually and in reality).

On the 2nd photo, with top down, the rear looks like the MB S Cab!

I already tested the 840d coupe and the engine doens't feel & sound diesel..I really liked!

    Enjoy

Re: New BMW 8 Series (2018)

    Congrats - great combo

I had the rear-wheel steering in my 7 BMWs and also ordered it for my X7. It completely transforms the car. Makes the longest car handy like a Mini.

Re: New BMW 8 Series (2018)

Traded my hybrid X5 with a 745e 'big nose'. Drives way better, no more SUV for me...

It's really getting better every time I see it. Would have it without M-Pack though, it's a bit more futuristic without it somehow.

    Congrats, agree SUV's are pointless.

Matter of needs and personal preference. Your GT3 is pointless as well but it is still fun, isn't it?! Smiley Smiley

The X5 is boring, with the exception of the X5 M maybe.

Actually all SUVs are boring, unless they have the proper engine (and chassis maybe).

This may actually be the problem: People don't always get to drive the "high performance" SUVs and they think that all  SUVs are basically the same. They aren't.

The new RS Q8 actually makes a point with the new Nordschleife record.

The higher seating position is great, especially in the city, I also think that SUVs look better/cooler than station wagons but again, this is a matter of personal taste and/or preferences.

Pointless? Without kids, maybe. Fun to drive? You bet.

In my experience, a SUV is never going to steer better than a comparable sedan. I bet the RS6 is more fun to drive than the RS Q8, even with it’s Nordschleife record. The X5 steers like a bus against the 745e yes

You could be wrong. The RS6 is (probably) faster on the track than the RS Q8 but some high performance SUVs are really fun to drive fast, especially because they actually pose a challenge. Smiley

Btw: The new RS6 weights 100 kg more than my new GLC63 S AMG. Smiley Smiley Of course there is the raised center of gravity in a SUV but still, I find it quite fascinating to drive a SUV fast.

The X5 M certainly doesn't steer like a bus vs. the 745e, on the contrary. Smiley

Of course it doesn’t, but I was talking about comparable cars. Literally one is cross shopping between a X5M and a hybrid 7…So, I still feel that a M5 steers better than a X5M. A Pana diesel > Cayenne Diesel. A Dacia Logan > Duster. Smiley

And those track times for cars with cooled massage seats is beyond stupid. That’s like wearing spikes on your loafers.

Oh yes, every leather surface that is touched while driving is heated: steering wheel, door panel, center console... The car has tinted rear windows and electric curtains.

    Hi English Manny,

Can I know more about your feelings towards the 850, as I'm thinking about getting one.  I have found a very low mileage car with a great spec in a coupe version, but I'm curious about your thoughts.  Daily driving, comfort, sportiness, is it to big to drive around town? Anything really that you like and anything you dislike.  I know they depreciate like crazy, as the list price on the one i found was 110,000, and we are talking now about the low 60,000's as purchase price. Six months old and less than 5k miles.

    Cheers...

Depends on what you are looking for. If you want a great sporty luxury cruiser - yes it’s a great car. It is quite heavy so if you are looking for more of a sports car then look at Porsche or even Aston if you want a more bespoke experience.
I use the 850 on the weekends for my luxury run around and long distance cruiser. Great for this.
I use my Tesla for my train station car. Was planning to use the Tesla model 3 performance for the train car but my wife stole it from me to use daily 😞 I use my sports cars for fun. Now I spoiled for choice. 🥳

Re: New BMW 8 Series (2018)

I wanted a comfortable sporty experience, with a nice v8 grunt. I have young kids so two seats in the back are also important.  I was originally looking at a C63 S, cause it's a little more unpredictable and will keep you more on edge, but there is something appealing about this 850, and I believe it's the more luxurious feel and less punkish image of a C63.  The only thing that has me worried as you said is the weight.  Have you driven it on twisty mountain roads, is it responsive enough to give you a bit of fun?

The rear steer makes the 850 very agile. So much so you have to get used to it since you don’t expect it to turn so well. At 8/10th the car is great. Not gone above that. Still only got 900miles on it. The 4wheel drive also a big plus over the C63. But the weight is there. The engine sounds as good as any AMG. They did an amazing job.
