Aprox. every two years, the noise emissions regulations are adapted. Car manufacturers cannot offer individual solutions for individual markets, so they are usually going for one solution for all the markets.

Porsche and AMG have already announced a substantial decrease in exhaust sound levels, the other manufacturers will follow sooner or later. With the next model year, even Lamborghini seems to need to adapt. Smiley

That, at least for the Turbo, launching in LA in the next few days makes much sense.

This would really surprise me.  Everything I’ve heard is Geneva 2020 early March.

Me too. I'm sure Porsche wants to release it a couple of years before the introduction of Euro Norm 7.

Yes, Turbo will be launched pretty soon (whatever this means).

GTS models are normally two years after launch, last year before FL, no?

    Re: 992 GT3 Touring...

    My feeling.

if the chatter is true re 2021 I think the gt3 will debut next generation hybrdi

we seen some videos with some electric type noises and with competition both from Porsche and otherwise the power needs to be seriously competitive.

How probable is for the next GT3 RS and GT2 RS to have the flipped drivetrain from the RSR?

This will separate further the RS models from the normal GT3 and the rest of the range. It could be an opportunity for Porsche against the mid-engine competition but potentially a downside for the 911 culture that has been based on the rear engine bias Smiley

    Re: 992 GT3 Touring...

I wouldn’t be surprised to see a limited RSR street-legal car (last one in 73 2.8L), but doubt for GT3 or regular RS.

It would not be relatively cheap.

While the parts are there, the whole front up to the driver seat is 911, the rear firewall back is from the Cayman with 911 bodywork bolted on. I have to imagine they will have to re-certify the resulting Frankenstein separately with governments on crash standard.

    Re: 992 GT3 Touring...

I agree I think we will see a possible 4.2 litre "fianl edition" in perhaps a manual 992.1 GT3 RS guise maybe for celebration of 50 years of the RS (2023). It will no doubt be a limited edition car like the 997 4.0L RS and uber expenisve - unlikely to see track time at the hands of an enthusiast and mostly bought by collectors and speculators...

Frank Wailliser made an interesting comment on record last month at the 992 Turbo press pre drives in an interview with EVO magazine.

He admitted Porsche had considered Hybrid in the 992. Five years ago when they were at the roadmap stage they signed off on a 8 speed PDK that had unused space for a possible hybrid augmentation, however after much testing they have found that the results were not satisfactory and where they had success the expense was too high. The 992 packaging was concieved with a hybrid augmentation in mind, however at least for this generation it will not be present...

He also said something interestng. He said that his appoitment to his current position took place mid stream through the 992 Carrera technical development but that he had a much greater  hand in the 992 GT3/RS development and indicated that here he had much more power to exert his preferences.

I dont know what that means. I do know we get the 4.0L engine with the ITB and GPF, larger and wider wheels, better aero and the older 7 speed box (he also indicates to this in his interview) but beyond those obvious things Im not sure what he brings to the car maybe from his time devloping the 918?

Whoopsy has a good line on whats happening at the factory, and Im sure a few others here so maybe they could give us their views?

Guess we will know in 5 months time. In the meantime expect to see the 992 Turbo launch before Geneva and the GTS models which are now finished and production ready etc....

Based on the outstanding demand for the Porsche 911 R, 911 Touring and 911 Speedster, there are many, many, many customers looking forward to several exciting 992-based models from Andreas Preuninger and Frank Walliser’s team with the awesome naturally-aspirated Porsche motorsport flat-six engine and the fantastic 6-speed manual gearbox...  1554541446878image.gif

    Re: 992 GT3 Touring...

Its a bit uimaginative as a render. The rear wing looks lifted directly from the 991.2 and the rear bumper for that matter too. Infact the front and rear fenders too!

I suspect that what ever article they publish we will learn very little about the future 992 GT3 (unless of course they interview Frank W. and he drops a few crumbs).

New 2020 Porsche 911 GT3 revealed... (Car Magazine)

    9AB645BA-6F34-4FB1-9BC5-4B04C5128622.jpeg

    (16 December 2019)

It's the new Porsche 911 everyone's been waiting for: the new 2020 992 GT3, aka the purists' choice. CAR magazine has been busy assembling a scoop dossier on the newcomer, and it appears that our appetites can be safely whetted once more.

The new 2020 GT3, due in the second half of 2020, will become the first 992-era 911 to offer naturally aspirated engines and it's set to offer a greatest hits of 911-kind, with the 4.0-litre non-turbo flat six, manual transmissions, laser-targeted hardware updates and a choice of models to bring the GT3 experience to a wider audience.

We’ve spoken to numerous sources at Porsche to assemble the best possible picture of what to expect from the new Porsche 911 GT3. Read on for our full scoop dossier.

A stiff structure for better handling

The latest aluminium-intensive 992 architecture is the stiffest platform ever used on a 911, and it’s light too. Only 30% of the structure is made from steel and yet it’s the most torsionally rigid base in the model’s long and storied history. It’s 5% stiffer than the last-generation 991.

This means that the suspension will have a head start in preventing body flex and in having a strong and stable (sorry) foundation with which to tackle the worst bumps, lumps and humps a road can throw at a sports car.

Suspension mounts front and rear are made of precision die-cast aluminium parts while the flat-six will be mounted directly on to the chassis.

Why the new 2020 Porsche 992 GT3 will be naturally aspirated again

We expect the new GT3 to keep its bewitching 4.0-litre naturally-aspirated flat-six and this year’s Speedster provides a few tips. Despite gaining petrol particulate filters and plenty of emissions-crunching hardware, it developed more power - 503bhp - and kept the 9000rpm redline for high-revving aural antics.

‘It’s 10kg lighter and we didn’t lose any power,’ GT division boss Andreas Preuninger told CAR magazine earlier this year. ‘In fact we got 10bhp more! We used individual throttle bodies, which help a lot, but it wasn’t easy…’

    Will it still sound epic?

While the addition of those particulate filters has stymied the sound of the Cayman GT4 - a little - the GT3 should still scream like an old-school Porsche, according to our intel. On the Speedster, the motors for active flaps in the exhausts were specially positioned in the airflow to survive the heat and allow more precise modulation of the exhausts’ vocal chords.

‘There will be stricter noise regulations to come in three years or more,’ Preuninger says. ‘It’s not really affecting the 992 GT3 – it’s for the cars that come after that. We will find solutions for them too. In my cars there won’t be any loudspeakers, believe me. Too heavy!’

A GT3 Touring is in the works

If you prefer your GT3s a little more under-the-radar, you’ll be pleased to hear that a wing-free Touring model will again be offered. Our artist’s impression above, by Andrei Avarvarii, depicts the regular, bespoilered GT3, but a more discrete version will be available for shrinking violets. It gains a pop-up tail in place of the scaffolding on the rump.

Although yet to be officially confirmed, we expect the new GT3 to offer a manual gearbox again, although the forthcoming GT3 RS model may stick to a paddle-only PDK twin-clutch transmission. Preuninger says demand for the manual-only Cayman GT4 ‘proved the manual is still alive’.

‘That gave us the tailwind for the [manual-only] 911 R project, and for the [991 GT3] Touring,’ he says. ‘So it’s built up, step by step, and we’re now in a pretty good situation where everyone is pretty aware of the needs of the GT customer.’

More spec secrets: dimensions and the art of the right-sized 911

The new 911 GT3 package will remain no bigger than before, to keep that just-right 911 footprint intact. Yes, the model has ballooned in recent years, but it remains a relatively small car in a sector that’s suffered bloat in recent years.

While the 992’s platform spaces its wheels wider apart than ever for standard Carrera models, for increased grip and stability, that doesn’t mean the GT3 will expand its tracks even further. Preuninger has promised the new 992 GT3 will be neither wider nor heavier than the outgoing GT3.

That’s good news: threading a GT3 down a narrow, twisting road is one of the most special driving experiences going. Were it to grow broader it’d become something of a liability on UK B-roads…

We’ll update our 2020 Porsche 911 GT3 scoop in the weeks ahead as we uncover more facts about it.

Im not sure why they bothered writing that piece. Its simply filling column inches for the sake of it. Even the render is so far off (simply a re jigged 991.2 GT3 image with some fancy wheels, a 992 light bar and a new diffuser). No substance at all in the article. Youll find more facts already covered off in this thread....
