    I have not yet tried the 7M.  Supposedly, it has been improved since first being introduced in the 991.1

    Hopefully, they have refined it even further for the 992...

    Yeah, even the 6M from the GT3 has a PDK case (which adds weight), but it is a very nice gearbox to use (most say nicer than the 7M).

    With 7 you get easily messed up because the level is then too close to other gears . The GT3 or Gt4 manual box would be great , but I guess they have to keep the best for the GT products ...

    From what I heard the box was improved starting with the 991.1 GTS onward. Since then, haven’t met anyone trying the manual box on these cars.

    I drive a 991.2 GTS with a manual.  It is a wonderful transmission and always fun to row through the gears. It's easy enough to drive in the city and in traffic, understanding that no manual is fun in extreme traffic congestion.  But I prefer the engagement and direct connection with the car.  Driving it is always an event, even if just making a short journey in town.  In the mountains or at speed - forget it, there is no comparison, the manual is automotive bliss. 

    My understanding is this transmission has been tweaked a few times since it's introduction in the 991.1 and is a good deal better. The friction point is longer / easier than older Porsche's and all the taller gears have immense range.  There remains a nice broad progressive powerband on the 991.2 turbo engines as compared to other forced induction engines and the manual lets you dial that in as you would like, with explosive power over 5k rpm.  Seventh gear is super-tall and practically unusable under 70 mph, and anything over 5k rpm in 5th, 6th, or 7th would get you arrested, so hard driving happens largely in gears 2-4.  7th is on the car for obvious fuel economy reasons.  However, it does work well for that purpose - I can get around 30 mpg cruising on the highway in a mix of 6th and 7th.  You can still pass people at 80+ in 7th gear no problem.

    The manual got dinged somewhat in the press but I am honestly not able to fully understand the critique.  It sounds like a bunch of vague negativity in order to create something to criticize - some of these journalists should be embarrassed that they are contributing to burying the MT because they just need something negative to say.  Manual transmissions require skill and thinking, autoboxes including the PDK don't, and not practicing manual shifting and driving likely leads to a dilution of skills.  So you have a bunch of rusty press hacks creating a storm about the manual owing to these tendencies.   That's my opinion.  Due to the dogleg location of 7th versus the rest of the gears, you do have a lot of possible destinations as you shift it up - to 3rd, 5th, or 7th from 2nd or 4th.  You basically cannot put it in 7th from either of those gears however - the car blocks this out - so the risk is mostly that you go to 5th from second or 3rd from 4th despite other intentions.  After more than a couple hundred miles of driving, one would more or less need to be a moron to keep making these mistakes.  The gearbox has great feel and it's clear where it is when I am when shifting it.  On a 6 speed there are fewer possible shift destinations and thus fewer possibilities of a mistake,  The car did take at least 2,000 miles to totally loosen up, which included both the shifting and the clutch.  That is almost certainly something Porsche engineered into it.  My own "skill" improved considerably once this occurred.  Maybe, just maybe, some of the criticism was on un-broken in boxes.  

    I was given a loaner 991.2 Carrera S with a PDK  for a couple weeks by my dealer and, though it's a nice car, have zero interest in it.  It does not feel like the same driving experience.  Great handling but a boring ride and an occasional tendency to make gear choice decisions that I would not make as a driver.  I always find that annoying in autoboxes and especially in a performance car.  BTW the GTS does feel a lot sharper in terms of handling and general responsiveness including the motor, though that could be a function of the trans and my distaste for anything automatic. 

    Having read far too many car reviews and acceleration time tests, the PDK happens to be very well designed for a zero-wheel spin clutch drop, thus optimizing the 0-60 time.  Partial  or total clutch drops in a manual are both an exercise in skill and financial cost, as you will be burning through a very expensive clutch with each drop.  It takes a very deft touch to truly launch a manual from a stop light to something close to its potential without a smoky clutch smell.  I can do it, admittedly not with a 100% success rate, but consider it part of the challenge of the car.  Few people seriously consider the 911 as a drag racer, so not sure why this is so critical to folks. In a perfect world the 3.8 l turbo would have a stick and this would be a heck of a thing to try to master.  I am not counting on  that though. 

    If you like manuals at all, the 7 speed is wonderful, esp in the 991.2, and something to be cherished these days.

    Main issue with the manual in my humble opinion is first and second gears are far too long, would prefer them lower and tighter with a need to use third to get to 100. Yes worse 0-100 times but far more fun on a pass road

    That was a problem on 996 and 997.  First is a little less tall on 991 and the torque is so massive that the issue kind of goes away.
