    997 Carrera S - Short Shifter experience

Finally I had the short shifter installed in my 997 Carrera S and the difference is pretty impressive compared to the OEM shifter but I'm not sure yet if I really like it.
It makes some pretty loud clanking noises when shifting, especially when shifting in the gears 2,4 and 6. And I always have the strange feeling that the gear didn't pop in completely but of course this is just a feeling.

I have to get used to it, I'm especially interested if faster shifting times can be achieved. My 996 Turbo had a short shifter too but it felt slightly different.
More on the short shifter in a few days, I just have to get used to it to be able to write a short but complete review.

Re: 997 Carrera S - Short Shifter experience

hi rc , this is strange ,i liked the 996 short shifter ,but i have an appointment to install it on my car next wednesday, tell me if i should cancel it...

Don't cancel it, it works fine but it is somehow a little bit different than I remembered because the shifting way is even shorter now (due to the already 15% shorter gear way due to the new Aisin gearbox) and it is somehow uncomfortable to shift because the gearknob seems to long.

We plan to install the shorter gearknob from the Boxster S Anniversary model, hopefully this improves the situation a little bit.

From a technical point of view, it works flawless.

Re: 997 Carrera S - Short Shifter experience

Keep the reviews coming in RC and Dhayek... I certainly hope there will be a shorter gear shift option when my car arrives - no point having a sport shift with the standard cars long stick.

why prashan? the short shifter is interesting from a shifting point of view ,not estethic.. no?

Re: 997 Carrera S - Short Shifter experience

my kit is arrived today ...but the 997 will arrive in a few weeks ....now I practice on my desk!

Well, I'm driving a 996 Turbo Cabriolet for a few days (don't worry, my 997 Carrera S is still OK as you can see on this picture... ) and I was surprised by the very long shifting way and the shifting feel. One thing is for sure: after having this comparison, the 997 Carrera S shifting is clearly superior, especially with the short shifter.

There is also a huge difference regarding the PCCB brake. The brake feel is different, much less precise and "linear". Which makes me believe that this 996 Turbo Cab has the "older" PCCB generation, not the improved version of the 997 Carrera S.
The suspension of the Turbo Cab reminds me a lot of the 997 with PASM (sport setting) but with a little bit less bumpy ride. The steering actually is the biggest surprise because many people have the feeling that the new 997 steering is less direct and feels less connected to the street. This is not the case, the 996 Turbo Cab steering feels more "stiff" and less easy to turn but surprisingly, it also feels less direct than the 997 steering. And what makes the 997 steering my favorite: I was driving a hill up at around 270 kph and I really had a hard time to hold the steering tight in my hands, it was shaking and tearing because of the bumpy Autobahn. The 997 steering is much better, not that much "nervousness". Just a few observations...

Re: 997 Carrera S - Short Shifter experience

RC, interesting comments you make. How much of the steering feel difference is due to AWD, ?less structural rigidity, and roughly 500 extra lbs of a TTCab vs 997S? Also, does this TT Cab have X73 suspension? Also curious if this PCCB on Cab is newest version that's on 996TTS...

Of course the AWD, additional weight, etc. make a difference too but this wasn't my point.
I just wanted to report the difference between the 996 Turbo Cab and the 997, nothing more and nothing less.

The PCCB is the "older" version as far as I know.

I can't answer more questions about this car.

Are you buying it for the wife or a replacement while your cayanne is in service?

Re: 997 Carrera S - Short Shifter experience

I can't afford buying this car for my wife and she would probably kill herself in it.
My dealer usually had a VW Beetle as a loaner but lucky me, he provided pretty nice cars lately but of course no Turbo Cab.

A little hint: just look at the license plate.

Re: 997 Carrera S - Short Shifter experience

    Turbo Cabrio S???

Re: 997 Carrera S - Short Shifter experience

Hi Dhayek - having seen the gearshift options on the current 996, I just thought a smaller shift would look cosmetically better, but fully agree with you that the beauty is in the short mechanical shift itself.

    Sweden?? ha

Re: 997 Carrera S - Short Shifter experience

hi all ,i installed the short shifter this morning ,to be honest ,the difference with the standard shifter is not thaaat big ,but you definetly feel it and i am happy with the short distance needed to change gears .the 996 had a very long shifting throw ,thats why if anybody with a 996 place a short shifter he will feel a lot of difference.the 997 has a factory fitted 15% shorter throw.
the only thing that bothered me is the difficulty to engage reverse..i dont know if it only my car or this is the way it is,its really annoying, you have to pull very hard in order engage it..so i am waiting from feedback from other users that placed the short shifter.
but i have to admit it ,the original shifter is realllly perfect...

Re: 997 Carrera S - Short Shifter experience

    Hey RC!
A few more comments on that wonderful cab you had in your garage for a while maybe?
Would you recommend it over a normal 996 Cab? I ask with respect to the fact that cab clients are usually less performance oriented than coupe clients.
Did you feel a big difference with the Turbo coupe in terms of rigidity?

Re: 997 Carrera S - Short Shifter experience

hi huys ,after my problem with the reverse on the short shifter yesterday ,i went back to the porsche center this morning ,they made some adjustment on the shifter cables (there is two) ,and guess what ,its perfect ,really ,i am very happy to have it ,shifting became much smoother, yesterday it was very hard.so its highly recomended ,and i found it much smoother than the one for the 996 .

I was told that this shifter was hard to shift when cold compared to the original shifter. Is that your experience Dimitri?

i was told ,and read the same ,but honestly ,after the setup this morning ,it didnt feel hard at all ,i would say maybe 10% harder ,no more.

Re: 997 Carrera S - Short Shifter experience

    Is it any 997 turbo/cabrio mule ?

That's great news. I'll keep this option on my order. Thanks.
