    PCCB wear - Service procedure

I like to track my 991.2 Turbo S a lot (now on CUP tires) and I just love the PCCBs; this is by far the most fantastic brake I've ever owned. But because it is the brake, I'm always concerned about its proper function and I'm getting quite anal when it comes to service.

During a track day last week a Porsche guy told me, that the disks are in perfect shape, because if they were not, one would recognize the wear indicators (small black patches in the disc). But today I learned, that this is no longer the case. Current PCCB discs will not shrink significantly in diameter (like steel discs), but the heat will slowly destroy the inner of the disc. The service procedure for the current PCCBs is to get them out of the car and use electric induction testing and a laser to measure if the disc is still ok. If you are the proud owner of such a brake, you can have a look at the disc, which will tell you the min and max value that this particular tool will measure. The good news is that the technician told me, that he has never seen a broken disc.

Re: PCCB wear - Service procedure

The weak link of the current PCCB is the metal 'hat'.

The carbon disk will absolutely not distort, but the inner metal hat can and will warp with heat. Porsche replaced a set of fronts on my 918 already and the 2nd set is already also warped,

Re: PCCB wear - Service procedure

the values that you see on your picture are the min and max of carbon content in the rotor. once the lower value is achieved, they are cooked and good to replace. they are 3 similar readings to be checked per rotor. once 1 of the value hits the min, the disk is officially dead.

with time and hard usage of the brakes, you will experience faster wear on pads.

they last quite long to be honest but they are not equal financially with the steels. it is still a very expensive with basically very small to none advantage other steel rotors. at least on the GT cars. for sure, on fat turbo, pccb makes more sense!

I have PCCB’s on my Boxster GTS that is only ever used on the road - hopefully the rotors will last for a very long time bearing in mind replacement cost! Smiley

Avoid serious track racing and off-roading(!) Smiley and you don't have to worry.

What do people think about PCCBs on a Cayenne Turbo?

I had them on my Turbo S  as standard ( albeit buried in the base price) and they worked well. Not sure I would pay to spec them on a Turbo though.

Re: PCCB wear - Service procedure

When your stock PCCB rotors are "cooked", you may want to replace them with Suface Transforms rotors which cost about half as much as replacement Porsche rotors, perform better, and last longer (and can be inexpensively refurbished 3 times).

    Excellent advice!

Matches my experience with my former Carrera GT exactly.

Re: PCCB wear - Service procedure

Had my Turbo S in the workshop for some service work and took the chance to have the PCCB rotors checked. The car now has 28.000 km from which about 8.000 are on a track and the rotors are still in great shape. Quite amazing I think

Re: PCCB wear - Service procedure

Great news, of what I heard though from others on track days was, that it is not the wear and tear but these little stones / debris potentially getting between the rotors and the pads causing damage...but, hey, your glass is half full, good news for today Smiley

Re: PCCB wear - Service procedure

the %wear goes down very slowly and this is good for the rotor. However, the lower the % goes, the quicker you will eat the pads. one of our buddy here swapped the PCCB system to AP racing steel one as he wasn't able to do more than 2 track days with the pads...but the rotor still is within the range but close to the wear limit.

far more than 8,000kms on track though kiss

Re: PCCB wear - Service procedure

Ending up in a gravel trap can seriously damage the rotors; one reason why a lot of people prefer steel brakes for their race cars. I also heard the rumors about little stones getting in between the rotor and the pad, but never talked to someone who had that problem. Appreciate the info about pad-eating rotors. I'll keep an eye on it kiss
